Not that it’s “super” luxury but the city I grew up in you had to pay for a recycling bin and for it to be picked up. While In the town I live in now it comes with recycling and is picked up as part of the bill. Yes I know you can recycle on your own and drop it off at a location but yeah… And “sustainable/reusable” products typically cost more. I know this somewhat makes sense bc it’s multi use and because employees can be paid better wages..

Hey, they definitely mark up their products based on my understanding!! We have a COMPLETELY local grocery store in my town and almost everything is reasonably priced. I can get a decent amount of veggies for ~$10 there. Stuff like locally, handmade candles are more expensive. There is definitely a markup for their products, but it doesn’t seem like it’s nearly as much and every single product in my lil store is local.
@charlene94892 жыл бұрын
Where I live, local produce and stuff is typically cheaper than buying other stuff because it is from down the street and easier to transport. Raising the price because it's local is confusing to me.

As a product designer I have answers: so what goes into erewhon’s almonds are locally sourced organic almonds (I’m assuming based on it being a large California export), sea salt, and a glass jar. 8oz of Organic almonds from target are 7.39 and those almonds could come from anywhere. You could argue that the sea salt could be really fancy who knows. 8 oz glass jars are definitely going to be more expensive than a plastic packaging (however they serve a great utility to the consumer), basically what I could find for costs they most likely spend $.35 - $.55 per jar. It seems like the almonds were potentially priced accordingly if you value things like organic, local, no waste packaging. Honestly the jar/juice items are the only thing worth it other than the deli.
@luv3bud2 жыл бұрын
yea i hear most people who go are for the smoothies and live food court they have. Its next to an equinox so beside the LA influnce culture the main consumers are prob Rich Ceos/ business people who could care less about a $10 jar almonds as long as there “healthy”

It seems just like whole foods to me, especially the prepared-food section, like macaroni and cheese. That's about the price you'd pay at whole foods near me. I live in central New Mexico where it's also a desert like the part of CA that LA is in, so part of it is that everything has to be trucked in from other places. There are local things here too, but just like LA there's not enough produced locally to cover what is consumed locally so you pay a premium for 'local organic' etc. Even Walmart rips people off - my best friend bought apricots from a non-Walmart grocery store, and they cost over a dollar less than Walmart's prices.

I'm pretty sure that Erewhon prices are about 20% higher marked up, because their "membership" (which you pay $100+ for) you get a 20% discount. So it at least has to be marked up that high, to encourage people to buy the membership. RE helping the farmers near you; you would do much better to buy from a Farmers Market to support local farmers. In CA especially the farmers market has laws that say you cant sell non-organic produce (some countries re-sell regular, pesticides sprayed fruit and veg and mark it as "organic" because theres no laws saying they cant).

Guy's Mt Shasta has super water I used to live there from 2005 to 2020 when I moved to Oregon. The water comes from a deep Aquaphor. When it rains it takes about 300 to 400 years to soak the ground to replace the water in the Aquapher. Mt Shasta is a semi-dormant Volcano and the soil is very rich and acts as a natural Water filter. I miss my Mt Shasta water when I have to go to my back doctor there I bring several 1-gallon and 3-gallon bottles to fill up. Klamath Falls water SUCKS.

Raw milk usually so rich and creamy with good smell. But it doesn’t stay fresh for too long. It stays fresh for day or two and then it gets sour (and you can make different product with it). I don’t believe this shop sells unpasteurised milk. Logistics just don’t seems possible.

Locally grown both assists the farmers, and provides a much lower carbon footprint. And, in some cases, doesn’t involve outsourcing of labor to other countries where the workers are paid even less/not at all/may be children.
@strawberrytown2 жыл бұрын
here i am to make a comment about the pricing. so almonds at whole foods are about the SAME price (Unsalted and unroasted 10oz) are priced at $10.49 in Downtown LA. Erewhon almonds are $10.50 which is only ONE cent more than the 10oz almonds from the Whole Foods in downtown LA. While the one from WF is 2 oz more than Erewhons almonds, Erewhons almonds are roasted and salted which accounts for like .. the process. Not to mention you’re getting a glass jar that you can reuse over and over again. Which the WF it just comes in a plastic bag that you could reuse but maybe only once or twice. There isn’t much of a price difference! Erewhon is about $1.31 per oz of almonds while WF is about $1.05 per oz. Erewhon would technically be more ethical considering the glass jar. So if you want to pay 26 more cents for the glass jar that you can reuse over and over again- it’s totally worth the price it’s placed at. And, obviously if you get almonds at Walmart it’ll be much cheaper but it isn’t as “ethical” than the Whole Foods or Erewhon almonds are.
