AK it was on this day November 16, 1898 that the first ever to be seen escalator in London was opened in Harrods. Mohammed Al-Feyed, an Egyptian, who bought the store in 1985 commissioned the Egyptian stairway to heaven in 1997. It looks amazing!

It always has been expensive, but I was always able to find a few affordable luxuries there. They are there, if you look hard enough. I still have towels, copper cookware, a door knocker and various other things I bought in Harrods over 20 years ago.

I loved the politeness and relaxed approach of londoners when i was there a couple of weeks ago... it's so crowded, yet fairly efficient because everybody behaves in a way to avoid causing inconvenience to others. In other places you'd have gotten beaten up by that security guard at the beginning... here he even made a double thumbs up pose for your video ! Reminds me of the security dude who practically jumped away to let us take pictures in front of Hyde's park lion&unicorn gate, then saying "i wouldn't want to ruin your picture". On the other hand, there's of course a dark side to this, when a server or an entrance employee launched "how are you doing?"... yea, as if they cared. Polite is great, but don't take it too far :s

I love the Harrods Food Halls. Whenever I was staying in London, I’d always stop at Harrods and pick up some cheese, pate or salmon mousse, and some crackers - maybe some wine - and bring it back to my hotel and have a little picnic in my room while watching the telly. Wonderful quality food.

Thanks for the trip to Harrods. I was impressed that you managed to find your way back to the Egyptian elevator. I must have spent 50 hours in Harrods over the years and I could never successfully navigate my way back to those elevators. The food halls were even more impressive before the Qatari sovereign wealth fund bought Harrods from Fayed in 2010 (it was Fayed who built the Egyptian elevator btw). The Qataris converted much of the food hall space into jewellery retail areas. More of the food halls were given over to dining space too. They are still impressive, but they were much more impressive before. For example, that entire dining hall was once the meat, poultry and wet fish hall. I suppose that, having paid £1.5 billion for the place, the Qataris wanted to get maximum return per square foot - and jewellery does that better than butchery and wet fish.

I really loved watching your video. Did such a fantastic job. I was at Harrod’s in the late 1990s and forgot a lot of details about how wonderful this store is. The architecture inside is amazing with the beautiful chandeliers, marble floors, columns, the main escalator. Everyone is friendly and the store is so clean and organized. The food court is incredible and made my mouth water. Also, I loved the jazzy piano music you had going through the men’s shoes. How can I find that wonderful happy music? Loved your video. First of all wow! Incredible experience to visit. Everything merge together you walk out of one store into another one there are no doors to push open. Its like a maze of stores. Like you pointed out the food hall is next to the perfume and sun glasses. This is definitely a store to visit in person am sure it will leave you speechless. Harrods has been chavy tat for over 20 years. No one with genuine class shops there. It’s popular with a certain type and tourists (who are usually disappointed) you can do better in London and most certainly around Britain. Harrods is B&M with silly prices

My abiding memory of Harrods?' Christmas !973 and I had been charged with buying a riding crop at Harrods for my American girlfriend. Stopped while enroute to Heathrow for flight back to the US in order to pick one up. Big mistake---I had a 50lb suitcase with me that I was not allowed to check due to the "Irish troubles" and terrorist attacks. Lugged that 50lb dead-weight around what seemed like most of the store. And as you can see, that is one big store!

Harrods looks even spiffier than I recall from forty years ago. I followed some desert Arabs through as they handled all the merchandise and bought a lot of it. In their neat beards and snow-white robes they were a pickpocket's nightmare-the first such folks I'd seen. I bought a tweed hat, which I still wear now and then.

Hudson’s dept store in Detroit had a food emporium. They were on par with Marshall fields in Chicago who also had a food hall. Most higher end dept store had some sort of food floor. Sadly they really no longer exist in the us.
