The Porsche Taycan is great to drive - there is hardly a better handling electric sports car out there in my opinion.
Welcome to part 2 of my Porsche Taycan 4S journey.
I have so far averaged a consumption of 22.5 kWh per 100 km over the first couple of months. With the ~83 kWh net battery capacity this means a theoretical range of 370-385 km with a 100% charge and ca. 300-310 km with an 85% charge. I expect it to improve to 400+ km in warmer temperatures.
I recommend you to limit the charging to 85% SoC as recommended by Porsche to reduce battery wear, except if you go road tripping in your Taycan. You can define your own charging profile which suits your needs under the charging section in the PCM and then you may also benefit from a lower night tariff, depending on your utilities supplier.
I have also set the max DC-charge speed to a max. of 200 kW instead of the possible 270 kW which reduces battery wear but makes DC-charging a bit slower by 4-5 Minutes (10-80%). In any case the Taycan charges super-fast if you need it.
One thing that did surprise me was the cost of using the Porsche Connect services. After three years, Porsche will charge you 249 CHF per year. If you do not pay for this you cannot connect with your car via your smartphone.
When you pay the 249 CHF you also get something called Navigation Plus with real-time information incl. a Risk Radar. And you get a better charging planner and a Porsche Voice Pilot.
I can live without these things because apple CarPlay is also very good (if not better), and I can also use the Tesla chargers if I need to albeit they charge rather slowly compared to an IONITY or similar fast DC-charger.
Without the costly Porsche Connect subscription I cannot activate the heating or cooling remotely, and I cannot lock or unlock the car remotely either or see the state of charge.
But apart from Porsche Connect, all in all, the Taycan has not given me any negative surprises so far, and it has proven a great car for my daily commutes. Quiet, fast, comfortable, and spacious. And it looks amazing.
This being said, I picked up a message from March 20th, 2024, from NHTSA, the US authority National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, that there may be another Taycan recall.
It is called ARA4 and concerns the traction battery and a risk that the high-voltage battery may short circuit. Owners are advised only to charge their vehicles to a maximum of 80% until the repair has been completed. Porsche must inform affected customers by May 17th. We will see if it is only for the US or also for the rest of the world.
Thank you for watching mobility insider.
Filmed in Switzerland in April 2024 and produced by DNTS Productions.

Great 2nd review. Journalists talk about launch control and drag races but owners (especially sensible ones) are focused on practicalities. I think you have to love owning and driving the car otherwise the superior cost for tyres, apps, insurance etc just gets you down. Please keep reminding us of the joy of ownership.

Will do! In the next video I'll do a 0-100 km/h test and a charging test 10-80%. Both came out incredibly strong for the Taycan 4S. And driving pleasure remains top.

I currently daily drive a 2019 BMW i3S. Excellent, and practical little car. Efficiency is outstanding. I am considering a Certified pre-owned ‘21 Taycan base with 7.7k miles. It retailed for $114k, and is very well equipped. The asking price is $64k which is attractive. My concerns are size in terms of parking, although it has rear steer which should be good in round-abouts. Regenerative braking, as the i3 is virtually one foot driving which I love. And finally battery heat mitigation that can be a problem from what I hear. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Great to know! Surely you got a good deal. In England they more than complain about rather low trade in values. When I look at Tesla's website then it is really hard to find better value. But they also charge money for premium connection. Drip charging makers are still topped by BMW who seems to want extra money to heat your seat.

Great overview. The charging controls on the app and car (profiles, etc.) are indeed horrible! Tesla nailed all of that. Porsche needs to hire a UI/UX designer from Apple or Nest. Other than that, love the car!

For comparison my 2022 Model X Plaid with 1020 hp and 2.5 second 0-60 mph has 19,500 miles with an average watt hours/mile of 327. 22.5 kWh or 22,500 watt hours for 100 km or 60 miles is 375 watt hours per mile. This is for 2 years in MN where we have cold and snow. Also includes some long trips and a small amount of towing. I drive fast often, by the way. Thank you very much for the info.

Tesla is unbeatable when it comes to efficiency. I tested the Model X Dual Motor as well as the S Plaid, and I really liked them. But neither the X nor the S compare favourably to the Taycan in terms of perceived quality and fit and finish. In short, I would not buy the Taycan new, but the Tesla I'd probably lease new on a 4 year lease. I feel the same way about the app as you do, although since I have learned to set the charging time and amount I have not had any issues. I would love to get a new one for many technical reasons, but I just can't justify it as this one is surving me well. Hello. I think your videos are very informative and useful, with that in mind I would like to ask you if you could make a video measuring the RF/EMF radiations inside the vehicle, so that we all know how Porsche is addressing this matter, in such high priced car.. So, you can do it in the 4 places available and also at feet levels, don't forget to put your phone away so there is no interference... Thank you again for the content.

Thank you, Morton. Fantastic, insightful video as always. I'm in the market for a used Taycan and moving away from a Tesla Model S. In your upcoming videos, would you be able to cover the practicality of the car from a family perspective? I do not want a Cross Turismo as prefer the shape of the sedan; however, with an 11-year-old and 9-year-old, and with us planning to use the car as our main family car, I do want confidence that the rear seat space is sufficient and boot storage is practical. The Taycan often gets tagged as a family sports car so I'd like to understand from someone who has experience of using one day to day whether this truly is practical enough to be used as a main family car. Many thanks!!

Thank you! The Taycan is ok for space, but not great. With two kids with long legs and the occasional long trip it could be tight. There a Tesla Model S would be much more practical. Our kids are out of the nest and I mostly drive alone or with my with wife so no lack of space for me. I even get a road bike into the back of the vehicle. For our family trips I run a Range Rover.

I cannot say exactly, unfortunately. But would estimate about 2-3'000 EUR per year, but it very much depends on the country you live in and how much you drive. The Porsche dealer should be able to quote a service agreement.

Hi Morten, congratulations on this series of videos. These are exactly what I'm looking for while deciding when to take the plunge and buy a second-hand CT 4S. One consideration I have that I haven't seen anyone address so far is the charging history of a used EV. I suspect a lot of those who bought a Taycan from new would not have been particularly familiar with the sensitivites of charging an EV. For example, how many will have heeded the advice to charge to only 85% and ignore their range anxiety? Also, with Porsche recommending Ionity chargers, how many owners will have only ever charged their Taycans on a 350kW DC charger every time it needed topping up rather than giving it a nice gentle 7.4kW AC charge at home overnight?! Also, how many will have leased their Taycans, not caring about the long-term effects on the battery of the way they charged? I see some businesses are now offering a kind of battery review service, but I have an OBD reader and Car Scanner which can tell me how many times my EV6 has been DC fast-charged, etc. So a question going through my mind is, will a dealer let me plug in the OBD reader on any of their Taycans I'm interested in buying?? Or can they provide some form of charging history? I asked a dealer this last question a couple of weeks ago, and they had no immediate answer.

Hi Phil, thank you for watching. I asked my Porsche Dealer (been a customer for 15 years and have two other Porsches!) if he would do a battery test to establish a health score. His reply was that this was not possible (although I know for sure that Porsche can do a test). Long story short; Porsche is very tight-lipped about the battery health - and Porsche even states that customers who do not follow the recommended SoC 15-85% could lose the warranty. The experience so far shows that the Taycan battery is in fact pretty good and holds up well. There were other issues such as sealing etc, but Porsche have rectified most of them. I suggest you ask for at battery test at the Porsche dealer and see what he says. You can also buy the car from the dealer subject to a subsequent test result of min 90% health score and have it tested by a third party (software provider Aviloo is widely available). My personal view is that if you have confirmation that the warranty is still valid and can be extended, I would not worry too much. The range should be 380-400 km with a 100% SoC which would indicate a healthy battery.

Hi Morten, this is a great review.... I'm trying to choose between a used 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range and a Porsche Taycan RWD Base that looks EXACTLY like this. Although I can afford the extra expense of the Porsche, I can't mentally justify the USD 25,000 dollar difference in price. The Taycan is without a doubt better looking, but is the price actually a justifiable difference?

The Porsche dealer can do a test but do not want to..., 3rd party specialists can do it, too (e.g. using Aviloo battery diagnostics at a cost of ca. 300€). A healthy battery should show a range of ca. 400 km (in range mode).

Again useful owners information that isn't from a car reviewer who can't say anything negative or they will not review another car. Example : VW Buzz reviewer who gave bad review on range got banned from reviewing VW cars. In the UK prices seem on par with Europe but used Taycan cars are dropping £1000 a month at least. Some used car dealers (including Porsche garages) are holding prices because I think they are looking at massive losses. Tyre wear and miles or km covered will be interesting. 20 inch Taycan tyres are about £200 each and 21 inch tyres about £320 per tyre in the UK. Insurance is about £1000 a year for a driver over 50 and UK does not pay road tax for electric cars until 2025. London so called ULEZ green zone will soon charge even electric and hybrid cars which are Free at the moment. In London ULEZ cost is £12.50 per day for a petrol or diesel vehicle. Electric cars will pay in London "during charging hours" whatever this means ?

That is an easy question to answer. Many of us love cars, whether they are EVs or V8s. Allow me to ask you something. If a combustion engine car had all of the features of a Tesla, would that be an attractive automobile for you? Years ago I will admit, I thought I'd miss the roar of a V8, V10, or envy a V12, but with active electronic exhaust systems on the market that even some combustion vehicles are beginning to use... the question of an EV becomes... why not! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4GTdKOvocZ5sKc AND kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXPQl36sis2So68
