I completely agree with everything you said. Thank you. It's not just a 911 gateway car, though. I have 5 doors, 4 1/2 seats, roof rails, and a cycle carrier. It's my EV, soft roader, sports car, family car. I love driving it, and I am going to stop typing and take it out now, just for fun.

James, it's a great car....it's not a sports car. Drive a mx5, lotus Elise etc...driving a light car is fun and sporty. The Porsche is great but hugely heavy and ultimately uncommunicative. my son just bought his first car..a 2011 Mégane Renault sport 2.0 turbo. @@paulhayes2189 I honestly doubt that you have an e-tron GT or have ever driven one. A 2011 Renault Megane is not more fun to drive. EVs have their own characteristics in driving emotion, for sure, but there are many objective points where they have an advantage. Take traction control (see e-tron GT vs indoor ski), handling in curves (the center of gravity sits low and, supported by the instant torque, this just gives an unmatched and totally different experience), the boost, etc. I see how one can prefer ICEs with fewer electronics, but EVs have definitely found their place. Many people, including me, love driving them for the sporty driving experience.

@@p4skal0 I exchanged a BMW 640d for my Audi, and really the main motivation was zero BIK (Ireland). The 640d wasn't a sports car but it's more engaging than my present car. It had gears a bellowing induction. Yes the audi is super smooth, point and squirt quiet etc but it's lazy really...and reflects me aging. I don't drive a sports car now, neither do you, despite the power, badge. You know very well, the lad with the 15 year old Boxster S next to you (or me) at the lights is the only one with a sports car. Sorry to burst your ego...

@@paulhayes2189 you are a one in a million EV-owner. I haven't driven the e-tron GT but if it's anything like a Taycan, it's better than all 27 cars I have owned in my life bar maybe the E92 M3. I have had 14 BMW:s and apart from the E92 none comes close to the Taycan in driving experience. 640d ?? You must be joking. While VAT might not be listed on a second hand privately sold car, to say it’s just immediately excluded when buying a second hand car is not really correct. VAT is wrapped up in the depreciation costs over a few years.
@TomShorrock
@TomShorrock 7 ай бұрын
My point was that VAT makes a large amount of prices up, I understand it’s not listed but still included. What I was getting at is if you paid £100k for a car and kept it for a week then listed it for sale you wouldn’t get anywhere close what you paid for it

I live in the middle east, i bought one of these from the showroom, manager driven for 9000km, and sold to me for cost price. They took a $25k haircut on it from the retail price. I think it looks nice , drives well, and I'm obviously saving money on the petrol. I don't think it's a gateway car, personally. It's a Porsche for people that want an EV. Petrol prices in the UK are astronomical. The petrol bill will run up to 5 figures over 2 years.

Im in the US, so some of the details differ (jealous of you guys who are able to lease Taycans through salary sacrifice schemes). Here in the US, unless you work for Porsche, a taycan will cost a minimum of about $1500 for a lease on a base model. And that’s after various incentives. But like you guys there’s lots of snobbery and misinformation being spread by people who should know better. Atleast here, taycans seem to follow a similar depreciation curve as any German luxury sedan. Not sure why people get so bent out of shape about that. And I’d be more confident owning an older taycan than a panamera, macan or cayenne because EV drivetrains are inherently simpler and there’s an 8 year warranty on the battery

I’m with you on the Porsche I drive a Kia EV6 GT Line S and thought about the possibility of buying a used taycan but the two things that made me not buy one were the service / maintenance and insurance. But yes it’s a fantastic car a friend who lives just down the road from me has the turbo s modal. It was raved by the motoring press when launched and it’s still the same car. Your right on options some can loose you money and others just make the car that bit more desirable for the used buyer. But you the new owner take the hit. Once again a great video thanks.

Sorry, but this is unique to Taycan. When it comes to Porsche the 911 holds, maintains or it's value grows more often than losing value. I bought a 2015 991.1 GTS and sold it after a few years for 20K more than I paid, my Taycan cost 150K and is worth , maybe 70K, unacceptable.. The range has also dropped substantally. Not a great value...
@TomShorrock
@TomShorrock 6 ай бұрын
It’s not unique to Taycan, it’s due to the government incentives that accelerates the depreciation, ask yourself if the government offered a salary sacrifice scheme or 2% BIK on a 911, you would find the 911’s depreciate exactly the same

@@TomShorrock I think it has more to do with the fact that everyone knows in the future the ranges will be better. Who wants to buy a 200-250 miles range when we will have 400-500 at some point? Also i personally go on trips 4 times a year around 500 miles. I know from my PHEV, that depending on how you drive the EV "range" is like 50-75% of that 250 miles...The benefit of my X50e is, i have another 450 miles of range if need be from the ICE.

Yes I’ve had other big engine ICE cars such as M4 and Jag V8’s which were a nice sound but I’m loving how these drive. I loved my i8 for 5 years and this was about the only worthy replacement. They have long service interval of two years or 20,000 miles and are cheap compared to 911. Service is cabin air filter, checkup on systems and possibly brake fluid and or battery coolant fluid. Much less than a regular ICE car. Brakes should have less wear than an ICE car due to the regenerative braking so expect bigger interval between pad and disc changes. However expect to pay more than an ICE car for tyres as these powerful EVs have a lot of torque and physics means lots rubber likes to leave the car! 😊

Value added tax makes complete sense. A business makes money as it adds value to something that it sells. A car dealer's value is sourcing, selling you the car and guarantees that it will work for 3 years (used car dealers of course add extra value by fixing shit before they sell it to you). The business doesn't have to pass the cost onto you, it could just pay the bill but its business so as usual the working people pay the tax.

If you got the chance to buy a 2 year old Porsche for the same amount of money you gotta be an idiot not to do so. The estimation that batteries depreciate over time is obviously true but so are ICEs. A used petrol engine doesn't deliver the same power as a new one anymore and there's way more parts that can fail. It's more the fear of change that keeps people from buying EVs and than there's the usual shit talking without ever understanding the topic. In the end it's similar to the stock market. Buy low, sell high. When everybody is in fear it's the best time to do so and the time for EVs is now.

Think people over state the reliability issues with the Taycan. Yes it’s true the early ones had some issues but most were sorted out with software updates and recalls or under warranty. I’d say that a two to three yr old Taycan should’ve had most of those sorted by now and should offer a good experience. Also a lot of the software issues were able to be reset with a few minutes of power cycling the car, much like a PC reboot.

I drive a 2020 Audi RS4 & have been watching videos of both sides of argument. Around Dec 2023 I stopped at a service station in Dundee on way to my home town Aberdeen. I noticed a fellow Audi RS car owner. The gent had an Audi RS e-tron at the charger. I visited the service station shop & loo. Some 10-15 mins later the guy was still at the charger. I was keen to hear his own experience first hand. This is what he said - He previously owned a RS4 like mine however now for around a year owned this Audi e-tron RS. He averages around 800 miles a week. So has had considerable experience. He like me lived in north east Scotland & drives all over Scotland. He was currently heading back from the central belt & had stopped to charge his car. His car was wonderful to drive but there were issues. EG in winter the range is less than 200 miles. He had just spent 15mins on the phone to the charge network company who apparently did have his credit card details but yet he needed to load credit. This type of issue was not uncommon. He reported that in the last year of ownership he had slept 5 times in the car. Recently when stoping to recharge he had to go to 4 chargers before one worked. Then the charge was so slow it took over two hours. Yet again he slept in his car. From what I heard he wouldn’t buy one again as they simply as the car range & in particular the infrastructure in Scotland just isn’t there. More electric cars are appearing on the roads & there’s now less even less chance of getting a charger. Sure no’s of chargers are increasing but the increase of EV’s is much more. If you live in Scotland. Have charging facilities at home & don’t do long journeys. An EV might work for you but for him they simply don’t work. This is also where I have reached in my thinking. Maybe in the future if there’s a much better network of fast chargers + a genuine 300 mile range (not charge at 70 of 80 % of this) I’d make the switch however for now an EV for me is simply not a viable alternative.

Even the gent I met described how at times it took a few goes to find a working charger. Maybe in time the network will be there however if I want to drive from NE Scotland to a west coast Island. I’m thinking I’m may well struggle to find chargers on route or at my destination. Let alone ones which are fast chargers?

@@SpiderMacKenzie We recently took a trip round the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh way and Berwick on Tweed. Up from Milton Keynes and back via the A1. There are chargers all over the place on the A1 and more going in. As for Scotland, we did not have any problems. We mostly used Tesla super chargers, which ALWAYS work, you don't need a special card or anything and some are open to non Tesla, but we also used EV power near the hotel [7 brand new 150kw stalls] and a couple of 50kw "Electrify Scotland" chargers we found in small car parks like in wonderful Melrose town. We did no come across anything that did not work. Amazing dead straight up and down old Roman Roads. We also drove through the Northumberland National Park via the A68. There were just no problems at all with charging. The car is easily capable of 300+ miles though at non motorway speeds. We just charged when we could - the Tesla car mapping has all chargers that are not "locked in" with special cards, but we invariably stopped because we had to, not the car. Maybe I have been lucky but also did a 1,000 mile round trip to the North West of Ireland and back - charging just was not a problem. Even overnight on a 13 amp socket at my Uncle's house gave 100+ miles. It is a differing mindset. I only ever had one issue public charging and that was a 50kw charger we found near the Holyhead Ferry Terminal - it started charging ok but stopped 10 mins later. We called the helpline and they rebooted it remotely and it was then fine. For some reason it would only give me instructions in Welsh but figured it out. I discovered later there were even (free) chargers I could have used on the Stena line Ferry. Finally, I strongly recommend a site like abetterrouteplanner or zapmap if your car does not have something suitable like the Tesla mapping. If you have to use a car for work - swallow your pride and get a Tesla, they are longer range, best charging, best value and super reliable. Local Pizza shops round here use Model 3 to deliver Pizzas and that is purely because they are the cheapest delivery vans you can get. I also know the popular MG5 Estate is well liked by people who have to drive for a living. There are also ODB2 dongles you can get that work with charger mapping [example TRONITY] using your phone or apple / android car link that will show your car range in real time and organise your route and charging stops automatically (Teslas do this anyway and probably other cars too). you tube video of someone going from UK to the boot of Italy in an e208 illustrating the real time charge data / mapping : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIaop2uGjM9gadU

What Car surveys answer the question, More than half (58%) of the Taycans in our survey went wrong, with a range of issues including air-con, drive battery/charging, bodywork and various electrical issues. Getting cars fixed was slow, too; 56% were off the road for more than seven days, but at least Porsche covered the cost of 97% of repair work. We have a Tesla model X paid £100k 58k miles value £40k now so they loose a lot less in value no idea why, had no end of issues with it been to the garage 3 times per year, 1 repair was no brakes, other issues being no dashboard displays when driving down the road. only charges up to 93% now! looks like Porsche have addressed the issues they have, with the new 2025 cars.

The biggest issue with used cars costing £100k odd is warantee, Consumables / accidents asside the whole car should be good for 10 to 15 years so why not give the car a warantee for its whole lifespan when prices are so high and have set prices for services at different mileages that are easy to see when purchasing? Unless of course you want to make money on the servicing and or don't have confidence in the car that you built and charged so much for?😂 I buy used because i cannot do the salary sacrifice thing, not bothered about depreciation because keep them till they die, knowing a monthly cost is atractive but costly, But having car that could cost a small fortune in service / repairs at any moment is a big no no.

This guy doesn’t understand how VAT works. And the nonsense about how easy it is to do long journeys in an EV is pure fairytale. If you’re a private buyer choosing a new car, don’t even consider an EV unless you want to bonfire cash. If you’re a company car user or a salary sacrifice buyer, you’re probably going to go EV because it’s tax efficient (and hopefully your other half has an ICE vehicle for winter use/long runs). The only time an EV makes a half decent proposition for a private buyer is when it’s halved in value after less than 2 years. And yes, they are disposable… if you drop £40k on a 2 or 3 year old ICE car, nothing can fail after 5 or 6 years that will cost more than its value to repair. If the battery pack in an EV fails or its range starts dropping to unusable levels (eg less than 200 miles in the winter), you’re stuck scrapping it, or dropping massive money on a new battery 🤷‍♂️

@TomShorrock nope. I wanted to see why you'd somehow come to the conclusion that buying a used Taycan was a good idea. Insuring a Taycan is one of the dumbest financial decisions you can make. And the depreciation even secondhand makes investing in Blockbuster stock look like a smart choice. I've run PCPs for my cars and my wife's cars for several years. Sticking with new, high end BMWs and Mercedes I've kept the monthlies low and made a substantial profit on each vehicle because of the equity that builds up. I'm not sure he does understand the car market. For instance, he didn't mention the oversupply of EVs, and the record number of Pre-registrations to meet government targets and avoid fines. This is having the biggest affect on used EV values. EG: There are currently 30 pages of pre-registered Volvo EX30 EVs on Autotrader for around £35k. Not sure what list price is, but I'd guess £50k ish. So if you bought at full RRP, straight away your shiny new EV has been devalued by £15k. Come trade in, to make a 1, 2, or 3 year old EV look attractive against the pre-registered cars, the price has to be considerably lower than £35k. So your trade in price is on the floor. Talking as someone who worked in vehicle sales, it's this that is having the greatest affect on EV depreciation. Lose the mandates, stop the fines, and sell EVs on features & merits to people they are suitable for, and the market would right itself. Once again, problems are being created by government stupidity.

@ianmichael8117 Each to his own, I guess, and I did say "in my view" but also my exoerience of having driven both. I spent time with the equivalent Taycan from the dealer and also the two variants of Etron GT. I didn't consider the RS as significantly superior to the GT, so I opted for the Etron GT over the RS and Taycan based on driving over a couple of weekends and family reactions to both cars both went in favour of the Etron GT. I prefer their approach to the dash and driving at night, the headlights were significantly better than Taycan, as were the asthetics again in mine and the fam's opinion. At least I got to drive 3 versons of the cars before choosing, and I don't regret anything. I'm a former ysed 911 owner, and my daughter currently runs a Macan GTS, so we get Porsche but on this occasion the Audi won us over in its Daytona pearl paint and Black styling pack it is so sculpted, it picks up the light from all angles, particularly the rear and rear quarter. Both are great cars, though, and very little to choose between them.

No, I don’t buy new because of snobbery. I buy new Porsches for two reasons: (1) you don’t know what kinds of abuse the previous owners did to the car, or what all the problems might be with the car (why the previous owners got rid of it); and (2) I can never find the option specs on a used car or a dealership lot car that I would spec myself (which is generally minimal, including smallest wheels/tires possible, all-metal roof when possible, no power charge-port door, standard music system, etc.), and my cars must have ACC (I’m amazed at how many used Taycans in the USA have no ACC). “Premium packages” are absurd, frankly; I don’t need/want most options in such Porsche packages, and it’s just a way to make Porsche & their dealerships more rich… I buy my Porsches new via special order, and I typically keep options to $5k or less

Great video, someone talking sense at last. I'm not sure why people think they're cool or informed when they dump on EV's.

I’m seriously tempted by one of these. I think the scaremongering still has some way to go though so maybe they will drop a bit more. I’m retiring soon so it will see me out I’m sure

Your main points apply to all vehicles. (VAT and Optional extras) What you need to have done is compare the depreciation against other comparable combustion cars, that would be a better way to make the point - and I believe you can make good points in that regard, the Panamera is combustion Porsche which is similar to the Taycan, and those depreciate pretty heavily too... as do most luxury saloons in that segment. You are dead right about the incentives for new ones though - Shame its damaging the credibility of EVs in the minds of the public, if we let the free market do its job that would be much better for the second hand values. You also might want to have declared that Porsche didn't pay you to make this video. 🙂

Porsche don’t pay anyone to review their cars, nor does any car manufacturer, it’s common knowledge
