Explore Nuuk, Greenland with a local Greenlandic guide as we walk through the streets of Nuuk and provide some important information and facts that might be helpful to people planning a trip to Nuuk or people who are interested in learning more about Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.
“Nuuk” is the Greenlandic word for “cape” and is named for its position at the mouth of the Nuup Kangerlua Fjord (otherwise known as the Nuuk Fjord) - the second largest fjord system in the world. The Narsap Sermia glacier flows directly into the fjord. Nuuk is the northernmost capital in the world if you don’t include Reykjavik. Nuuk was founded in 1728 by the missionary Hans Egede after he left his first settlement at the nearby ”Island of Hope”. The population is approximately 16800.
As I walk through the streets of Nuuk with the local guide, you will see Nuuk old harbor, Nuuk Cathedral, Hans Egede statue, Nuuk water taxi station, Nuuk boardwalk, Nuuk center (Nuuk shopping mall), Nuuk Katuaq center (Nuuk cultural center), Nuuk Tupilak Travel office, and many other beautiful sites.
At the end of the video, you will see the old apartment complexes that the Greenlandic government built back in the 1960s and 1970s when they forced people to move from some settlements to Nuuk.

@@WandererBell Yes we would leave Newfoundland april most seasons, depended on the ice really, we were fishing Turbot & every 12 to 14 days we would port in Nuuk to unload, I think the U,S wanted Greenland to become an state, While there did you visit a pub called Christine:s saloon?, the drinking hole for us when we land lol, But it had an American influnce of 1800s, with wagon wheels & horse saddles inside, & lots of american movie posters, all westerns, i think it was built by an American
@WandererBell
@WandererBell 3 ай бұрын
I don’t remember visiting that pub in Nuuk. In 2019, the US made an attempt to purchase Greenland but the proposal got rejected. There is still strong US military presence in the north and the US opened a consulate in Nuuk in 2020.

Thank you for your kind support and feedback. I totally understand your point. It hurts me too from time to time when my videos are not exposed to more targeted audience that might find value in my videos. If all my viewers who enjoy and watch my videos on regular basis give me a thumbs up, it will help youtube recognize my videos more, but the problem is that a lot of people who enjoy my videos, forget to give me a thumbs up or comment 😢

the part when she told the story about the nativr settlements being forcefully relocated really got me... I wonder how many "bittersweet" (a word she so meaningfully chose to use) untold stories took place in the development of what looks like a beautiful native-centered capital like nuuk.

Good points you're making....I'm betting - based upon the graffiti and the sort of shoddy looks of the place - that this is where most of the crime in Nuuk originates from...she handled the explanation about as well as could be expected and - overall - did a wonderful job with the tour.

But now.. with kids today... they are still learning greenlandish.. but they now favor english instead of danish.

When the tour guide mentioned self governance occured in 2009... I was surprised. So I googled it. Sigh.. youtube won't let me post the link to the denmark general provision: Act on Greenland Self-Government (Act no. 473 of 12 June 2009). Also.. she did a good job of explaining the history of her ancestors arriving and then denmark taking over.

@@WandererBellok. thanks. The Question i have is this, why the name Greenland in the first place?
@WandererBell
@WandererBell Жыл бұрын
@@tyodughdaniel9367 Greenland was named "Greenland" by Erik the Red, a Norwegian explorer and colonizer. He named the island "Greenland" as a marketing strategy to attract settlers despite the fact that much of Greenland is covered by ice. He chose the name to make the land sound more appealing hoping to encourage people to settle there. He wanted to differentiate Greenland from Iceland and make it sound more inviting. So, it was a marketing strategy as opposed to accurate description of the island's actual environment.
