Never been! Seems nice. Would have to check it out in person to get a feel though. ๐
Sejong City is almost exactly as you described. My family and I moved here about 9 years ago, and we are very satisfied with how safe and clean this city is. Sejong is a great place to live if you have a stable job, but itโs not easy to settle down due to the lack of companies in the area. As a result, there are many restaurants and cafes, but consumer spending is relatively low, making it a challenging place for small business owners. The city is well-connected to nearby cities, so people often go elsewhere for entertainment or major purchases. While it may not be very exciting, it is a good city for living. However, the cost of living here is slightly higher compared to neighboring cities. Thatโs probably why the burger you mentioned was smaller than you expected for the price. If I had known you were visiting, I could have recommended some great coffee shops. One of Sejongโs hidden secrets is that it has many excellent coffee shops that serve truly delicious coffee. Anyway, thanks for the video.;)

I live in Sejong City and work in the Prime Minister's Office. I was also a research scholar in America, studying at the University of Georgia. Sejong City was created to reduce overcrowding in Seoul and to distribute development more evenly across the country. The goal was to strengthen South Korea by relocating some government functions to a new city. Although there were challenges at first, Sejong has grown significantly and has become an important hub for government work. Itโs not a failed project-in fact, itโs a smart initiative thatโs helping the country develop in a better way. By the way, I hope you have beautiful, meaningful, and memorable experiences during your stay. I also hope these memories will spur you to visit our beloved country again.
Sejong City is still under construction. It is said to have been designed for a population of 800,000, but currently has about 400,000 people living there. It has the highest birth rate among local governments nationwide. The reasons are said to be stable jobs (one of the reasons is the large number of civil servants), childcare environment (there are also many childcare facilities), and high housing supply rate (they initially supplied houses with relatively good purchasing conditions). In any case, it is a cleaner and more convenient place than any other region. It is also a good area to raise children. The problem is that there are still too many vacant spaces in commercial areas.
I've been living here for like 7-8 yrs. I moved here for a government job. I honestly think the city was great at the very beginning. not many lived there but tons of money poured into the city infra. But as soon as the tide of getting a new admin capital fades, a budget cut came in. that's why you could see those fancy infra not well-maintained. But so far, I like it here. It's quiet, clean and I like the big river with the walk roads.

Thank you for the Sejong City tour! It's very interesting. I don't think it's been completed as an administrative capital yet, but Nick is the first person to see the city in such detail.

I have been enjoying your video since you arrived in Korea. You are heading into my hometown next. I'm living in the US now, but I was born and raised in Gongju. I'm looking forward to see how it got changed.
I've been there a few times these days. There is a unique caffe in the city which is Meta45 caffe. You could've seen the whole city on the high floor even in toilet. It's unfortunate for you missing that place. I think that Sejong is not very successfull but that is needed for decentralization. hope you nice journey - from citizen of Daejeon. -

A serious effort was made by the government to create a new paradigm for urbanism with Sejong City. Unusually high level of attention was made to create a livable city that was in balance with the river and the mountains. The initial masterplan was won after an international design competition by a Spanish architect/ planner 20 years ago. The architect designed a city that was not densely organized but rather designed around a ring road that went over mountains and rivers such that residents were never far from nature. I visited the city several times over the years and have been impressed by how well the initial concept of city to nature connectivity works. Sejong feels like no other Korean city because of this aspect. I thought it felt more like a European village in the Alps rather than a half million urban development in Korea. I would want to live there. In my opinion , this is a good example of how to build cities in the 21st century. The sky-bridge district of connected buildings is the government district. American landscape architect Diane Balmori designed the masterplan for this district in another international competition. This area is the reason for Sejong City cause the governmental offices which was the original reason to move the countryโs capital city to Sejong are all housed here. Thanks for the tour. Really nice to hear your thoughts on your visit.

Twenty years ago, the Korean government attempted to make Sejong the administrative capital, but failed. At the time, there was little need for population dispersion, and most people lived in the metropolitan area. Therefore, most of the metropolitan area and Seoul citizens opposed the relocation of the capital to another region, believing that it would be detrimental to their interests and the plan ultimately failed. As the problem of low birth rates becomes more serious, the need for population dispersion is being raised anew, but the vested interests of the Seoul metropolitan area and Gyeonggi-do are still strong or even have actually strengthened.
The construction of Sejong City will be completed in 2030, so the city is still under construction. Therefore, it is not appropriate to mention failure now. All government departments have already moved to Sejong City, and in the future, the National Assembly and the President's Office will come to Sejong. Accordingly, 45 broadcasters and media organisations will also relocate to Sejong City. Sejong City is a planned city like Washington DC in the US, Toronto, Canada, and Canberra, Australia. Just because the city is currently quiet, it is not appropriate to call it a failure. Sejong City has an area of 80 per cent of Seoul, but a population density of 5 per cent of Seoul.
Nick, still touring here and there in korea, i remember ur almost first video to arrive in Busan and start ur journey into korea eating patbingsoo. thank u so much for you to introduce all of korea to people in the world. i am a redisent in daejeon near sejong. so wanna say hello and wish good luck with ur trip in korea.

Great city, your analysis is spot-on. Mostly brand new, most of the people living there're government workers (not higher ranked) so inequality isn't big and not intimidating. Also, people are more gentle and cautious there because the govt employee circles are small and connected.

your trip filmed in sejong was very cool. i do hope many people around the world know of the sejong ! The city was built very well along with Songdo in Incheon

i only say this city is the best in terms of work and life balance period!!!
Wow, you came to near my office!! Why did you say that the Sejong City project was a failure? I have lived in Sejong for over 10 years. One of the purposes of the new capital project was to disperse the population. In that respect, I think it has been successful. Actually many stores are still empty. ๐ข
@tribunusplebis59324 ะบาฏะฝ ะฑาฑััะฝ
Now I'm living in sejong gowoondong. It is hard to conclude that it is a failure. Sejong has a population of only about 300,000. Furthermore, it includes the population of nearby rural areas. This makes it look calmer. Also, Sejong City is the place where the youngest people in the Korean population live together. ๐
Thanks Lime, I just showed a small part of Sejong but I hope you have a better idea of what the city looks like!

Thank you for the video, Nick! That circular walk-bike path looks absolutely surreal. It's my first time seeing Sejong City in such detail. And yes, Jjimjilbang truly symbolizes life there! The previous administrative capital, Gwacheon city, and its satellite cities were much closer to Seoul. While Sejong city has a geometric disadvantage like Daejeon, located at the geometric center of South Korea but far from Seoul, successfully transformed into the country's R&D hub. Sejong city seems to be thriving based on your video. I left Korea before the Sejong project began, so I don't have much of an opinion on it, haha.

it's a city of the future. just give it 20 more years.

As a citizen of Daejeon, it is a pity that a large number of Daejeon people moved to Sejong after Sejong City developed. One of my acquaintances invested in a commercial building in Sejong City, and he is actually suffering a lot of losses. Sejong City seems to need more change and development.

Brand new cities made of reinforced concrete are often seen in Korea, the Middle East, and China, but why do they appear to deteriorate rapidly after 10 years? For example, I find the 100-year-old Old Seoul Station attractive, but the 20-year-old New Seoul Station next door has no appeal at all.

The housing price at least doubled in 10yrs. Why r they having hard time? ๐
Better than being in crowded Seoul. Looks peaceful. rather be in harmony with a small community than being disturbed and get bumped with large gatherings.
