It is a pain, I play a server called Simplicity pvp and it was started on April 23, 2011. When 1.16 dropped it was a pain to find new nether biomes, and the chunk trails led right to my old base haha. New nether biomes left clear as day paths to some bases.

There were only a few servers at first, but there was literally hundreds of servers before survival update and classic servers kept rising higher and higher before, after, and during paid release. They eventually died when Mojang pulled the plug on them. The oldest anarchy servers predate 2b2t they come from classic era before any rules could be made or enforced. Notch's testing server being the oldest server and only for a while, that is where some of the earliest devs got involved and actively tested but there was a era even before this before 0.0.14. I tried to get involved but was told by notch he didn't really need help. There was many moments where notch thought it wouldn't get even 100 players nevermind millions. When he finally did he seemed happy but overwhelmed.

There is actually a server that opened in october of 2010 that you didn't cover. It’s name is 90gQ and it is based in Sweden and is still active with youtube videos all the way from the start. The longest let's play is on the channel called STAMSITE.

I've played on 2b2t, MinecraftOnline, and zero.minr in that order. They're all quite fun. I made some cool friends, participated in a public dupe, and even made a map art on 2b2t. If there wasn't such a long queue, I would probably still play on it. MinecraftOnline has some really cool builds. I have an island in the middle of the ocean, but the server lag on there was just awful when I played. Hopefully, it'll get better, because I'd love to actually make something. I'm a blue on zero.minr right now, and I'm currently on Invictus. I hate puzzles and mazes. Lol.

At one point I tried to play on Minecraft Online, only do discover it is false to say no blocks are given out. The admins there are playing in creative mode and building a lot. They use free blocks. They do not mine them. As a result they got big cities full of lies. They also got some legacy users who have bought a super expensive role past in the day, when it was still possible, which gives them god powers.

Forgot to mention the fact that Nerd.nu had a massive feud with Team Avolition. Videos related to that feud have millions of views. It's one of the most infamous Team Avo rivalries.
