How have I never once thought that turning the wheel one way takes you forward in time (as with Ben) but turning it the other way would take you back?! Wonderful episode as usual!

Thanks for the shout-out! I do think the alternative possibility that Alvar was on the island with the army is cool and makes a fair amount of sense. That said I still prefer the idea that he was the leader of the Others at that time. One reason for that is how suspicious it seems to me that DHARMA built their Barracks (and the surrounding pylons) directly above where Jughead was buried. And the on-island leader's house was specifically built around the monster's summoning chamber. Almost as if they were trying to prevent easy access to these things. To me, this suggests at least one high ranking member of DHARMA had intimate knowledge not just of the island's history, but the history of the Others themselves. But to be clear... I don't believe this was widely known throughout the Initiative, due to the well-established secrecy of both DHARMA and Hanso.

This is without doubt one of the one of the most mythological episodes of the show, and it's actually quite underrated

I can't see anyone using the Donkey Wheel to leave the island so casually, especially after seeing what happened when Ben used it to leave. I realize the Dharma Initiative had used it to send a polar bear off the island. But I suspect that could be considered as one of the later incidents that finally convinced the Others to get rid of the DI.

0:30 Amazing The 'Cunningham' tag is odd. My headcanon is that Widmore is so distant and arrogant that he doesn't even know the real names of his fellow Others. I wish the 1954 period was explored for more than one episode... But your video more than makes up for it. There's a lot of 'filling in the gaps' here, but as always, your theories are fun and even (I assume) historically accurate. I can't imagine how long it took you figure all of that out. 3:01 An interesting detail here is that Richard says he was 'forced' to kill the army, which suggests he didn't want to do it. Perhaps this was the idea of the current 'leader', and not Jacob? Man, Richard really had a rough time serving all kinds of bad leaders. I completely get why he lost it when he discovered the latest leader was literally the personification of evil.

Good video. Interesting the thing that Widmore named the other "Cunningham" when talking to Richard... There was some theory on Lostpedia that he could have been a defector also from the U.S Army.. But yeah, your theory is also good..

This stuff would be great material for a prequel series.. I wish they would make one to explain some of these plot holes and fill in the lore a little bit. But I also recognize that can lead to more plot holes and confusion, especially if not done correctly (like in star wars).

Great work! I really like that theory around Ray Shepherd. I hadn't heard that fan fic before. It does make sense given the clues in 316. Regarding Hanzos' early visits to the island, I don't feel that would be feasible. The island is constantly moving, especially after Richard turns the wheel. Any information that they have on the crash site of the Black Rock would have no influence on where the island is after Richard turns the wheel. I don't feel that the Hanso folk could freely get to the island back then. In the 70s, they were finally able to find it using the Lamp Post (?) station. Regarding the others using an American English accent, my assumption is that Jacob spent time off the island, to learn languages other than Latin. He settled on America for no good reason. Perhaps ended up picking several candidates from there over the years. Jacob perhaps also brought an English speaker to the island from America, and had them tutor the others in English. That Eloise and Charles did not develop American accents after growing up on the island is a weird anomaly. It may point to Latin being the main language of the Others for centuries, and they only spoke English as a means for communication with outsiders.

If Richard was recruiting in or conducting business in the United States from, say, 1890-1970, he'd have quickly learned that not having an accent was to his benefit. When you look Hispanic you're gonna be behind the 8 ball during that time period. Having an accent would make it worse. But being well dressed, having money, and no accent would make it much easier to move through those spaces in that US time period.

I personally am not a fan of the Ray Shephard theory. I don't like the implication that Jack would be from some special Island heritage. The Alvar Hanso one is okay, but I think I'd rather just assume the leader is someone we don't know anything about. I'm of the perspective that not every unknown factor has to tie back around to stuff we are familiar with. The universe gets to be bigger that way! :)

Totally okay. And quite understandable reasoning too. The candidate wheel in the lighthouse has so many names, many of whom could've been leaders in the early 1900s and have no connection to anything we see in later years.
