Hello. Great video. I worked for a time at a Nike-Hercules Missile site, M-74 , in Waukesha, Wisconsin for a time. Worked in the IFC (Internal Fire Control) area you are touring in this video. Brings back many memories. There were essentially three types of radar involved. The largest dome was the Acquisition radar (I believe that's the first structure you climbed), missile tracking radar (MTR), and target tracking radar (TTR). Signals and data from these were sent to the Launch Area to the missiles to intercept enemy aircraft. Personnel assigned to each site rotated duties from maintanence status (maintenance of equipment), to standby status to Hot status (Missiles up, ready to fire). Some crew was always in Hot status at any given time. Hot status meant crews were on-site on 24-hour shifts. If equipment issues occurred during Hot status, crews on stand-by crews went Hot until then issues were resolved. It was serious business at the time.

IFC stood for Integrated Fire Control. A site was not always on Hot status. Stationed on Nike sites 1960-66.

That was cool. I hiked up to one of those sites a few years ago, but I'm not sure if it was this one. Kudos for integrating Chuck Norris into the subject matter. There's always a way to do that! ;) As for other films tackling the Cold War, believe it or not, the original 1950's "Invasion of The Body Snatchers" & "The Thing" played on the whole 'Red Scare' that was prevalent in the US at the time. If you watch them with that in mind, you'll pick up on the underlying theme of, "Us vs. Them" and "They could be posing as one of us.". So, great video and looking forward to next week!
@OddityOdysseys7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! There are several in L.A. so we've been hearing a lot of people who have hiked to one but had a hard time figuring out which one haha.... There are a surprising amount of Cold War related films! We just picked 4 to show, but "Invasion of the The Body Snatchers" was on the original list! Thanks for watching, friend :)

@@OddityOdysseys Just discovered you guys and I cant stop watching your content! Liking and Subscribed, of course! In fact, my girlfriend and I do something very similar to what y'all do, just without the entertaining, beautiful videograpy. LOVE your channel, keep up the great work! There is a restored and preserved Nike facility just on the north side of the Golden Gate bridge in the Marin Headlands, as well as many dozens of bunkers all up and down the coast from Devils Slide in Pacifica, to Point Reyes area. There are some spectacular bunkers to explore, and Ive been to most of them. The next time you are in the bay area, I would love to show you some of them! There are also some hidden mine tunnels under UC Berkeley. My favorite is this hidden bunker in the marin headlands that have a WWII multi story concrete tower that has a balcony into certain death, where you can look straight down nearly 1000 feet into the surf. Id love to show you some of the less well known finds!

I once went to one of the underground missile sites in Palos Verdes! I'm not sure if it's still there but there are a couple entrances to the underground sites in the maintenance yard of Point Vincente Park. Nothing was locked so my friends and I were able to freely explore a lot of it. It was really cool and there were a ton of old newspapers everywhere.
@OddityOdysseys7 жыл бұрын
That's awesome you were able to explore the one in Palos Verses! There's one in Chatsworth that used to be opened, but unfortunately was closed off a couple years ago. Were the newspapers dated from the Cold War era by any chance?

I was HIPAR High Power Acquisition Radar operator, was never in the missile part. Interesting trip into the past. 76 now, it was a privilege to serve. Thanks for your service.

This is the radar tower for the missiles located at woodley+ victory in van Nuys. The control towers/radar towers separate from the missles. The control/radar towers usually on top of highest peak for radar observations, missles on a big flat area nearby.🤔👌😮👍🥳

That radar/control base is above Encino in santa monica mts. for the missle base -- victory/Woodley. YOU CAN SEE A ROW OF MISSLE BUNKERS FROM WOODLEY ST., ABOUT 50O' FROM VICTORY BLVD !! SAME AMOUNT OF MISSLE BUNKERS ON OTHER SIDE OF BLD. A MAJOR BASE MUCH BIGGER THAN THE OTHERS ( chatsworths, sand canyon,.Malibu, ect.

Back in the early 80's when I was in high school me and my friends would sometimes drive up into the mountains to one of the Nike bases that overlooked Silmar. In a 4x4 you could drive right up along the fence and park on this little dirt helicopter landing pad the forest service would use for fighting fires. From there you could look out over the San Fernando Valley and see the whole valley all lit up. We would be up there drinking and just a few feet away from us would be some Air Force guy patrolling the fence with a German Shepard and an M-16 slung over his shoulder. Usually the guy wasn't much older then we where. They would walk by and wouldn't say a word to us. It always felt like we where going to get busted, I mean here we are under age and drinking beer right next to this secure missile silo like we own the place but they didn't care. We would have the doors wide open blasting music and acting retarded and as long as we didn't try to build a bon fire they would just ignore us. But you could always tell when there was heightened tensions because they would increase the guards patrolling.

One thing you failed to mention was that the Nike middles warhead wasn’t just a normal small war head but a nuclear war head so that one middle was capable of destroying entire squadrons of aircraft. This was done to prevent invasion as well as to prevent large bomber wings from making it to their targets.
