I have watched several videos on this airbus even before it was put into service and listened to all the commentary about it yet it still baffles me how something that massive can achieve fuel efficiency with the areodynamics of that giant bubble on top. Even wide bodies are moving towards 2 engines. The tech has come a long way and there are the fuel saving considerations. A350 predecessor A340 had 4 engines and A350 (that is larger) has two engines. Beluga is based on A330.

The base model for a beluga is an Airbus A300, not a A320. The A300 is a wide body plane with a wingspan of 45m. In addition, the engines are taken from the larger A330, which compensates for the increased drag.

Watching it being loaded in its operations center it sort of reminded me of the USAF C5 Galaxy. The planes look nothing like each other but the view of the cargo bay and the way it opens upwards is like the C5 when just viewing the bay like that. Of course the C5 did have a full passenger section above the cargo bay which is different.
