What is an Art Director? That's the question I asked many current and past Art Directors in today's video and well... it's kind of hard to explain. The role is broad and multifaceted so summing up the job in a simple and concise way is kind of challenging. Never-the-less, we did it anyway. An Art Director is.... (watch to find out)

See, I tried majoring in graphic design. But I have found that I prefer the BIG PICTURE over working on the small parts. I love story telling, I love photography, I love creative writing, and I love movies, design, and learning about and working with people, etc. I love all of that. See I love variety and I love always exploring new ideas and yes problem solving. I’ve been SO confused on what I want to do because I don’t really wanna just be a graphic designer. I’d rather direct the graphic designers and everything to do their part in creating the over all vision

That sounds like an Art Director as your entry so that you can eventually become a creative director as your end goal. That’s the job description. But you will have to start with utilizing graphic design skills and mixing it with strategy/idea generation.

I think we often romanticize the title of "Art Director" and want to make it sound super prestigious and fancy with all these damn buzzwords. But let's just look at it from a practical point of view: If you get hired as an Art Director, it's because we need you to do a hard job. And typically, the job is that we give you a brief. You better be smart, so ask some damn good questions. Then come up with badass ideas that we can use (your ideas better not suck), and then go get on the computer and actually make that shit. And your shit better look good, because we need to sell that shit. And once we sell that shit, you gotta make sure your vision is carried through to the gritty end. No one said it was an easy job. There's a HUGE range of skillsets-you gotta be strategic, you gotta be conceptual, you gotta know your programs, you gotta get other people excited, and you gotta give enough of a shit to make sure other people don't fuck it up (and it seems like every step of the way, someone wants to fuck your shit up). Anyway, is Kyle an Eagles fan? Because if so... #FlyEaglesFly!

To me, an aspiring outsider it is someone that is responsible for the whole process from idea to image/objet, responsible for the whole thing or else it doesn't exist or it becomes memes. It is creating art : use your brain and creative power to communicate to others the core concepts of a brand/collection/artist's universe, etc.

I came across this video because I've been doubting what I want to be. I am currently a first year collge student so please bear with me. I've always loved animation, the thought of bringing something I created alive. But recently I've been getting negative comments from people around me saying it's not a real job or whatever. As much as I hate it, their words did kind of get to me. Don't get me wrong I still want to become an animation designer but when I stumbled across this video it got me thinking about maybe I could become an art director of animation? I have no idea if that is a thing but it's a shot. I wanted to learn more about being an art director and what it takes. I want to start out small and grow bigger and further myself. You get me? Sorry if it is weird.

Not weird at all and you can absolutely do that. Forget the negative feedback. They don’t know what they’re talking about. Follow your gut and your interests. Yes, animation is a highly sought after skill in art direction. Many ad agencies are looking for talented motion designers or art directors with motion capabilities. Just keep finessing and building up that skillset, creating a portfolio of work and go for it! Do something you love.

You overlooked a few things, like directing on set, where you create the scene and tell the story visually. Plus, being able to draw storyboards is a big plus. And if you mix in some marketing and understanding how customers think, you're into visual merchandising. More skills mean more doors open! 😅 In a nutshell, an Art Director is someone who sees things differently, always aiming to tell a story that touches people's hearts and guides their feelings.

My bf is an art director for TV and film and he does a lot of set building, buying, hiring, then sells props back to stores at the end of the shoot. Usually, it's the film director with the overall vision, but the art director can tell them what they're able to do with the budget (budget always has to go over in order to get something worth producing, but the producers always shoot low with the original budget to keep production from going too high) and brings ideas to the table on how to do it or how to make it even better. So there is creativity involved; He has a very quick way of visualizing what a general idea should or could look like and uses his creativity to problem solve. But you also have to be VERY good with people. You work with a lot of people and vendors during a long day of prep or shooting and you won't get called back if you are rude or just in general bad with ppl. You have to start as a PA or assistant. If you are handy but also creative and can work long days, then art in film might be doable for you. But my bf is hyperactive and easily bored and this job is perfect for him, so you would be a bad fit if you don't like a ton of physical activity or need lots of sleep. But you stand by on shoot days waiting for mundane tasks such as resetting visual elements of scenes, whether you are the art director or assistant. So it's a balance of working your butt off and then being patient and waiting around for the next scene or reset.

Great video mate! Question: I see the role of creative director, absolutely something to aspire to. As a fledgeling copywriter looking to work form the ground up, ideally towards a CD role, what would you say the best route/approach be? Cheers!

Great question. Step 1 is to be the best copywriter you can be. Improving your writing and conceptual craft with smart and strategic copy and ideas. Step 2 is to double down on the strategy to help sell in those ideas. This includes building a compelling case and working on presentations that effectively communicate your ideas to the client. Step 3. As you move into a senior copywriter role, you should then start to mentor and look for opportunities to grow the junior talent on the team. Helping with management and growth. You will also work on your presentation skills and improve your relationship (building trust) with your client. After you do all of that you’re well on your way to becoming a creative director. Overall, be reliable and effective at what you do. With experience, the role will come. Hope that helps.

Any differences between TVC commercial AD and Fashion industry AD? How many kinds of AD in the design industry?
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 3 жыл бұрын
Instead of thinking as broad as the design industry I would think about it as the advertising, fashion, and movie industry. There is an art director role in each of those categories and yes the job differs quite a bit in each. An Art Director brings a creative vision to life. Advertising (including TVC though it’s rare you would just focus on commercials) is ideating and designing to sell products. Fashion is visual aesthetic of shoot/publication. Movie is to oversee how visual elements come together to bring a scene to life.

Digital art director typically focuses more on web and ui/ux but typically, now, specialization is lessening. Most art directors are digital art directors too and are expected to execute across all mediums.

What do you think about the difference of Art Director - Creative Director - Artistic Director. Are they the same?
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. My next video is actually all about the different roles within the art direction path so I’ll go more into this. A Creative Director is the final position in the art direction track so you eventually become that level through promotions. It goes Jr. art director, art director, senior art director, associate creative director, creative director.

@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 4 жыл бұрын
Lola Coulson hey! It really depends. Some clients utilize more illustration than others. There are some Art Directors who never physically draw and some that do all the time to create elements for their piece. It’s really just kind of depends on your skillset and what the brand allows you to play with visually.

Do i really have to study graphic desing to be an art or creative director? Its my dream but i cant study graphic desing
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the question. If you mean you can’t study graphic design because you’re not interested in it, art direction might not be the right path as that is 75% of the job. If you’re saying you don’t have the financial means to take graphic design courses, that’s a different story and very possible. If that’s the case, I would head over to my video called degree to become an AD.

@@OpenDoorCreative thanks for responding!! Actually i loveee art and i'm 100% a creative person, i love creating concepts that involve a story w/ photography, makeup and clothing, id love to study graphic desing but its too expensive for me...do you know what other careers could led me to be a creative or art director?? I'm thinking on studying publicity/marketing and PR is that okey?
@OpenDoorCreative
@OpenDoorCreative 2 жыл бұрын
@@valeria-xn9zi there are may kinds of art directors (in fashion, film, and advertising). For advertising in particular, you will definitely need graphic design skills. It is more affordable than you might think. You just have to use the means that you have. Instead of going to school for it, you can learn from tutorials, skillshare, or KZbin to help build your portfolio. When you say you could study marketing/pr instead of graphic design, what exactly do you mean by that as they should be the same money wise. You don’t need to go to a design or portfolio school to pick up a degree. Some art directors avoid college altogether and work on building their work on their own which is definitely an option as well.
