@@KTPinto The cartoon show Jem and the Holograms came out first a year later in 1986 they made dolls. The dolls were a competition to Barbie and at the time there were Barbie and the rockers dolls. By 1987 however the Jem dolls were more popular than the Barbie dolls.

I would love to see a part 2 with She-Ra, Jem, and Maxi- those were my girls! As a kid, I watched most of these series but the only toys I cared about from this batch of 80s children’s shows were Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony, Lady Lovely Locks, and Moon Dreamers. I was obsessed and had a ton of the dolls! Especially My Little Pony and Rainbow Brite. I loved the Care Bear series but never wanted any of the toys. Same with Strawberry Shortcake, Pound Puppies, Sylvanians, Glo Friends, and Potato Head Kids. I did have a couple of Popples that I received for Christmas one year but they never held my attention.

In Japan it is not only going strong but those cartoons dominate children's media. For girls PreCure reigns supreme since 2004, same studio behind Sailor Moon, Doremi, Cutey Honey etc. (they been doing this since 1966, same time slot too)

This video made me realize the amount of shows/ movies that were made to sell toys. As someone who grew up in the 2010s, I just had an intense memory of the show “Project MC^2”. Which was a Netflix show and a doll line. When it came out I was growing out of my doll obsession so I’ve only seen a few episodes back in 2015. There was also the Monster High and Ever After High lines that had dolls and shows/movies.

I genuinely thought I made them up for a long time, bc nobody I talked to remembered them, and I couldn't quite remember what they were, all I remembered was "not Care Bears, some other creatures that look like them with antenna." Pac-Man - Yes but not when it was in the 80s, I did watch it online on KZbin because there was the movie Pixels out at the time and I wanted to watch something interesting reflecting the history of Pac-Man (and not that other you know what show from Disney lol XP) Rubiks Cube - No, but I've seen about it, I think? I think I should check it out at some point. Sylvanian Families - Ohhhh I have never heard about this, it looks cute! :3 Maple Town - Ah, another cute series I never heard of, very interesting, and I also like how it was an anime ^-^ Care Bears - I think so, but not the original series. I did watch the CGI Joke-a-Lot movie as a kid tho lol XD Popples - This one seems very bizarre indeed... maybe I should check it as well ^^; Lady Lovely Locks and the Pixie Tails - This looks very beautiful, this probably must be an old doll yea? :) My Pet Monster - Heard of it but never seen it ^^; Rainbow Brite - I heard of that one too but I don't think I watched it, I feel like I should because I recognize the VA for Rainbow Brite being the voice of the main heroine Lucy from that cartoon The Littles ^-^ My Little Pony - Yes, but not the 80s series. Part 2, please! With most of these shows, my sister and I either had the toys, and watched the shows, or had seen the shows, but didn't own the toys. We had a limited amount of storage space, so we couldn't get them all. But we didn't ask for them all, so it's fine. And toys are expensive! Also, I've played Pac-Man, but wasn't aware of the show's existence, until KZbin came along. Actually, there are quite a few of these shows that I wasn't even aware of, until now. Here are some of our favorites: Owned the toys and watched the shows: Strawberry Shortcake Care Bears (I also had the books! Plus, ours weren't store-bought. Actually, Mom had made Care Bear toys from patterns she used to buy at a fabric store.) My Little Pony Jem (If you do a sequel, please mention her! I loved her light-up earrings!) Star Fairies (Please mention them! Their special was a riot, especially the elves!) Rose Petal Place (I also owned the books!) Watched the shows, but didn't own the toys: Rainbow Brite Pound Puppies (Actually, I only remember owning a VHS copy, distributed by Little Golden Books, where the characters weren't animated, but it still had narration. Anyone remember those?) Popples Transformers G.I. Joe Teddy Ruxpin Owned the toys, but wasn't aware of the show: Lady Lovely Locks (I also had the sleeping bag!) Glo Worm (Actually, that was my sister's) Bonus: If anyone remembers Cherry Merry Muffin, she should've had a show!

Maple Town is both a Toei anime created by Izumi (Chifude) Asakura, and an English dubbed anime too, it’s just that its most popular toys came somewhat later.

I owned or played with all of these toys, but I didn't always get to see the TV shows. It was hard as a little kid in the 80s to try and see all these shows, no matter how much you wanted to. It always made me upset that Jem, Maxie, and Barbie couldn't share outfits cause they were all different sizes. I forced it anyway ;)

Okay here's my age showing (granted I saw most of these in the late 80s, sometimes the early 90s in reruns, cos it often took a while for these shows to get to other countries): LOVED most of these, including the Rubik cartoon. LOOOVED it. Also one of the few and possibly first cartoons at the time that I had regular access to that featured a Latinx-American family espc. being the main character. I loved the intro, I loved the lore, I loved that widdle voice - I wanted a magical little puzzle friend too! (I even convinced my parents to get me a Rubik Cube so I could help him if I ever encountered him - but I was very small, and not very good at it, peeled off most of the stickers to 'solve' the cube)...I was actually kind of scared of E.T. though. Pac-Man - I dunno why I had a crush on him, but like, 8 y/o me wasn't going to be a home-wrecker. Also that crush at the time was mostly "He's a video-game hero he's so cool and nice! I wanna be his best friend! Also Ms. Pac-Man's and her amazing boots' best-friend! I'll tolerate the baby, he can play with my lil sibling." Care Bears (Family . in particular) - Grumpy was a favourite and still is. Haven't really watched the newer shows but some of them seemed pretty fun. Strawberry Shortcake I didn't see any of the first cartoons til the mid-90s but I deifnitely had at least 1 plush. Popples - I didn't have nearly as much access to the cartoon as I wanted but I loved what I saw. My favourite version of them still, so far. I enjoyed Lady Lovelylocks and was sad there weren't more episodes to expand the lore of the world & characters (I also lived exactly a 3 hour plane-ride from the nearest Toys R' Us, which was the only place you could've gottne most of these toys)...I mostly only knew her from commercials and didn't actually see the cartoon properly til I was in my late teens; I still wanted the hell out of these dolls. THe Pixietails hidden in the art on the boxes or in the books... jsut loved the art-style (didn't really come across as much in the animation). I wanted looooong hair (and still do if I'm being honest). I believe I had Lovely Locks herself, and I definitely wore the Pixietails in my hair at the time. Rainbow Brite was my queen and I am still mourning the paper-dolls I had in kindergarten (when my family moved I think it got lost in the shuffle). That's all it took - I didn't even see the Specials and Movie until I was in college. Never liked the dolls. MLP - Megan's outfit got so bad so fast; but I always did my best to ignore it. Windwhistler was my favorite but I never found her in toy form. I'm still waiting for the Seaponies to make a come-back. Glo-Friends - *sigh* I accidentally burned (and almost melted) my cousin's Glo-friend by leaving it perched on a bulb that was on... It wasn't malicious (I was more excited to see one in person since it was yet another toy that wasn't available in stores where I was living). I can still hum the intro song... MoonDreamers was my childhood white whale. i wanted those toys SO BAD. Loved the cartoon, loved the art and designs. And just... these were basically jsut chibi magical Jem & the Holograms but they glowed in the dark so therefore were cooler. Damn i still want some of these... one of the animal friends toylines had a 'secret' compartment you needed a key to open... Pound Puppies - Loved the cartoon, hated the toys. I wanted Nosemarie and Brighteyes plushes or figurines so badly, not some random dog lump... Not even sure if that merch even existed.

I only remember two of the shows in this video. Care Bears and My Pet Monster I did grow up watching lots more cartoons that had a toy line. She Ra was one of them along with He Man even Transformers and Teddy Ruxpin were favourites as a kid. I was born in 1986 but the cartoons still played on tv long after 80s were over. I later rewatched some of the show a retro channel that we used to have but then they just played in a loop so it got kind of boring.

I had strawberry shortcake, lady lovelylocks, a pound puppy, a moondreamer, my little pony and rainbow brite, in fact I still have her horse starbrite. However, I never saw any of the cartoons, except maybe The odd episode of RB or MLP when at a friend’s house as she had the videos, I’m not sure if they were shown on British TV and don’t think they would’ve appealed to me much as I preferred more comedy or action cartoons. I loved the toys on their own merits and Jem was my favourite!

Unlike Lady Lovely Locks and the Pixietails, DiC Entertainment produced another toy inspired cartoon, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (1989), based on characters created by Nintendo of America. Distribution of the cartoon was completely handled by Viacom International (Nickelodeon’s parent company), the animated series centers on Mario & Luigi whose allies were Toad and Princess Toadstool (currently known as Princess Peach), foiling the evil plans of King Koopa and his minions.
