Gabe, Richard the Lionheart was King of England and landed in Cyprus in 1191 on his way to the third crusade with the aim of recapturing the holy land from the Muslim leader Saladin. He (Richard) took Cyprus from the last Byzantine Emperor of Cyprus, a person called Isaac Komnenos. Thus the Byzantine empire ended in Cyprus in 1191. It began in 330 AD with the split in the Roman Empire to Western And Eastern parts with Cyprus falling under the domain of the Eastern Half the headquarters were in Constantinople (Istanbul)! And the emperor appointed a governor for Cyprus. This Cyprus was a province of the Byzantine empire for 861 years! I am a tour guide for Limassol!

The 4th Crusade did in fact attack the Byzantine Empire, although they were of course also Christian. This resulted in the sack of Constantinople in 1204. So it is possible that the castle was at some point taken by crusaders. The crusades, although pretending to be a holy war, was in reality more about controlling the trade routes towards the East. Mind you, the overseas route the Portugese and Dutch took much later around the south cape of Africa, was not yet used. So the only way Medival Europe could trade with the far east was via the Silk Road. This is what made Venice so wealthy, because they had an exclusive deal with the Byzantine Empire to facilite the last part of that route in to the rest of Western Europe. Thats why there are so many Venetian builidngs and ruins in the eastern part of the Mediterranian.

As you have said to me, this is a travel blog and not a political one. Why is it that you keep calling it TRNC? The UN and all the states in the UN refer to this area as Northern Cyprus except of course Turkey. Your phone is not working unless it is picking up signal from a Republic of Cyprus antenna. The further away you are from the Green Zone, your phone will not work. UN personnel use the Republic of Cyprus phone service and/or satellite phones. If you want to have a working phone, you need to get a Northern Cypriot SIM card. The entire area is internationally sanctioned except of course Turkey. Everyone gasped in the UK watching this, when you said Scotland,England, Wales, Northern Ireland isn’t separate countries!! We have separate laws. Also Scotland for many years has tried to split away from being in the UK, if you Google Scottish independence it shows what’s happening. It may well one day split from the UK, as it’s a separate country from England, Wales and Northern Ireland!
@vaultkeeper2 Жыл бұрын
The fact is Scotland is not more autonomous than a state in the USA. If states in the USA was now renamed "countries" but the system stayed the same, would that make them actual countries? I don't think so. Certain British court rulings apply in Scotland, which they wouldn't do if Scotland was an independent country and also the UK wouldn't be able to overturn Scottish laws if it was an independent country. The most common and accepted definition of a country is an independent and sovereign country.
@GabrielTravelerVideos Жыл бұрын
As soon as Scotland separates, I'll be super happy to add another country to the list. Or do I have to go back once it becomes independent for it to count? Not sure about that, something to ponder.
@PerfumedByTheSea Жыл бұрын
@@vaultkeeper2 Yes British rulings apply in Scotland. But then Scotland is still part of the UK! US “states” have nothing to do with the UK countries. We have counties (similar word yes, but two very different things) in the UK. Which is the only sort of similar thing to a US state. So counties of the UK are similar to US states. But the countries that make up the UK are not similar to a US state! And not everything in the world has to be compared to the US!!! ;)
@PerfumedByTheSea Жыл бұрын
@@GabrielTravelerVideos It will still be a different country to England, etc if it separates or not! You could go by flags too. As the Scottish have a separate flag (well actually it has two!) to the English!
@vaultkeeper2 Жыл бұрын
@@PerfumedByTheSea In which way does Scotland have more autonomy than a US state or any other autonomous area of another country like say Bavaria or Valencia? And what would be the point of seperating from the UK if Scotland already was a country? There are many definitions of what qualifies as countries, there are about between 200 to 300 countries in the world comparing the strictest definitions with the loosest definitions. But the most widely accepted definition is that a country is a sovereign geographical area controlled by a government who can not be overturned by any outside or federal entity. That is, an independent country. I live in Sweden and we have tons of regional flags here, that doesn't make those regions countries. Scotland is a country by the local definition in the UK which has chosen to call it's 4 autonomous areas countries. Not internationally.

For anyone who would like to know, no, Northern Cyprus is not a part of Turkey, nor is it occupied by Turkey. If it was, then for sure Turkish law would apply in Northern Cyprus which it doesn't. A law of Northern Cyprus can not be overturned by some court in Turkey. There are many, many differences between Turkish and Northern Cypriot laws, what tourists may notice for example is that Northern Cyprus does not require a visa for many of the countries that Turkey requires a visa for. Northern Cyprus has much more lax laws about alcohol and gambling, for example casinos are illegal in all of Turkey but legal in Northern Cyprus, and alcohol is much cheaper in Northern Cyprus because they have much more liberal alcohol laws and lower taxes on alcohol. These are just a few of the very many differences.

Visa is not required because one cannot travel directly to the Turkish occupied northern land. One needs to pay visa to Turkey and then travel to the occupied land. Hi Gabriel. Sorry to hear about your phone service. I heard tmobile has new terms and conditions that limit the roaming benefits outside the US. Did they complain about your extended international usage?
@GabrielTravelerVideos Жыл бұрын
I don't think that was the issue, I lost service as soon as I traveled into Northern Cyprus. Probably it will work when I get back to the southern side. I know about the limitation on international roaming, I've gotten text messages about that on previous trips. The timing is kind of random. Luckily the only time they cut me off was a few days before flying back home after seven months of traveling.
@YanniVassilopoulos10 ай бұрын
Ha! The issue is that there is no Western cell service in the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus. He had service near the green zone, not when he got away. As such you cannot fly directly to the occupied part of the island due to international sanctions! Attila’s boot is still over the island! 50 years under Turkish occupation! Free Cyprus!

Sadly many are not! They are left to decay and crumble. Even beautiful St Andrew’s monastery on the tip of eastern part of the island, was left in shambles. Luckily the EU intervened and since it’s gradually being restored.. In the south, GC have taken care of the TC homes and places of worship. They are ready to be returned to TC’s if they choose to return. Many have.

@@andrewslifestyle2289 Really? Turkish Cypriots are returning to their homes? I think non-Turkish Cypriots should be allowed to return to their properties in the north too.

@@andymarinou It sounds like we agree, Greek, Turkish and English are the three main languages. But in the north most people speak Turkish. I've been here for a week and recognize the Greek language, but I've never heard it spoken here. What a wonderful location and castle, it would make a great location for a movie. It doesn"t look like Turkey maintains archeological sites though, I noticed a lot of rubble at the castle and the churches.Hopefully it won't be allowed to just crumble away.

Of course ruins have alot of rubble. Even the medieval ruins up here in Sweden in Scandinavia like on the island of Gotland have alot of rubble. Many countries unfortunately do not do enough for their historical sites.

I thought I had posted this comment, but it seems to have disappeared?! I went to Northern Cyprus because of an old newspaper cutting I had kept for many years. It was about the writer Lawrence Durrell. He wrote a book about his time there during the1950's conflict between the Greeks & the Turks - 'Bitter Lemons of Cyprus'. I flew into Ercan Airport from Istanbul - it all seemed a bit cloak and dagger at the time! Wonderful place. You can visit Durrell's House at Bellapais.

Britain walked away from the occupied territories after the revolt of its residents in 1960. 14 years later Turkey invaded and occupies 40% of the island in the past 50 years! Freedom to Cyprus!

13:13 "I go by the UN list of member states..." so you should not be calling Palestine a state because it is not a UN member & they do not meet the definitions of a state such as defined borders. They have limited self-rule, that's it.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos Honestly, your opinion means nothing. I thought you might show some integrity for contradicting yourself & admit you were wrong. The Palestinians have OBSERVER status. That doesn't make them a UN member state does it? What is their currency? Their central bank? They don't have embassies in most countries, including the US. Their founder - Arafat was born in EGYPT! Don't insult your viewer's intelligence by comparing the terrorist entity PLO with the Vatican which has hundreds of years of history with empires such as the Holy Roman Empire. The Palestinians have a state - Jordan (formerly Trans-Jordan) named after the river that marks the border with Israel. The Arabs living in the W. Bank have Jordanian citizenship. There is no such thing as a Palestinian passport.
