I understand the secret level is accessed in Underhalls by a secret panel in a monster closet outside the red key building - but I wonder how anyone was supposed to find that? There doesn't seem to be any design language or telegraphing pointing a player to it at all.

Access to both is silly. They're both random walls that you have to click, which 99% of people would miss.

@@Mike1064ab hey Mike, that is a good point. There's a distinction between "fun secret you can find if you have a curious mind and realise when the designer is having a bit of fun," and then "this is so randomly placed and illogical that I wonder if the designer was having mental health issues while making this"
@romerogoon
@romerogoon 7 ай бұрын
@@Mike1064ab it's a pretty hardcore way of looking at it. The design choices taken through the mainline Doom games generally point to something being a bit off - a misaligned texture, a light shining on a wall, an odd coloured lamp in a series of them etc - that Underhalls exit is just an rando wall that happens to have a "use" functionality attached to it.

Well done, nice job! And for the record, Sewers and Betray were made long ago by some young Doom fans. Much later they wound up working at Vicarious Visions, and hid the levels in the Xbox game, but just as personal mementos of their earliest mapping days. The levels were expected to stay hidden far longer, and weren't meant to be a part of regular gameplay.

The OG X-Box Doom 3 itself is kind of interesting too. The levels have been streamlined from the PC version, and a co-op mode is included, both of which make it worth playing for me. Seeing how they altered the game is similar to seeing all the differences in console ports of the original Doom games. Also, the streamlined level design actually picks up the pace of Doom 3 a bit, bringing it a little bit more in line with the other games. But just a bit.

Sound pitching was in the original games up to v1.4 where the changes in the DMX API was unaccounted by the codebase, and thus unintentionally removed it from the game. Considering the console games don't use DMX, that's why it's back.

Always thought it was odd that this version wasn't more complete feature-wise since the OG Xbox itself was quite literally a Pentium III PC. I would have assumed (as a non-developer) that 'porting' it would have been trivial compared to other console ports since everything else was on entirely different architecture but as you said this was probably just a small side project so didn't really have much of a budget.

I think the reason why the secret level brings you back to Hangar is to make sure not to break the level order in Ultimate Doom, since each episode and level is coded (e)x(m)x, adding another level to that would've broken the level order. Since 9 is the highest numerical number that's single digit, and zero would've been digitally nullified, it wouldn't be possible to code it as E1M10, since the number 1 would've been struck first, bringing you back to E1M1.

Playing Doom on the original Xbox is hands-down the best way to play Doom I ever found, and the most faithful port that maintains the experience perfectly. Of course, I'm not talking about the version they released with Doom 3, but the homebrew port that I have on my modded Xbox. I've spent so many hours playing Doom there, because until someone made Chocolate Doom (and later Crispy Doom) there was simple no other way to do it that properly delivered the game with sensible controls.

These were my entryways to Doom back in the day! I was about 9 years old, watching videos on people getting scared playing Doom 3 and thinking it was the coolest looking game ever. After begging my grandparents for it, I discovered that the game crashed on their PC the moment the invasion started. Wouldn't be for another 1-2 years until I'd get the Xbox port and I was amazed to see all the classic Doom games there. Despite being so enamored with 3 I never really bothered to look into the originals so the change in tone and technology was a little jarring at first. Absolutely loved them though! Their presence in Doom 3 for the Xbox was a huge leap for me getting way into retro FPS games and along with classic webseries like AVGN helped foster a love for retro gaming. Its funny because even tho I grew up with the PS1, Doom's sprites seem waaaay older due to the lack of polygonal 3D. Wouldn't be until years later that I'd understand just how ahead of the curve the game was in 1993 to challenge even the PS1 and Saturn to get a priper conversion (tho PSX Doom remains my favorite non-sourceport version of classic Doom). Rambling now but man this video just excited me a ton! Brought back so many memories!!!

I'd still say that this was probably one of the only one still that are entirely complete compared to every modern port out there. Its an interesting port over all with how complete it is, yet incredibly bare bones. Its very much "here's doom, enjoy" mentality. However the additional 2 bonus levels felt like they wanted to do more considering the history of Betray and Sewers. I don't think modern ports of Classic Dooms are complete anymore. Modern ports of doom 2 after this have entirely butchered the Wolfenstein levels to be able to release in German markets. The SS soldier enemy is entirely removed, and the Nazi references are lost. The SS soldiers are replaced with Former Humans, which have entirely different AI and stats to them. SS soldiers fired aggressively at the player until stunned, making a room of them quite dangerous, as opposed to simple Former humans which fire once before walking around for a little. It sounds trivial to mention, but in the long run it makes the game incomplete compared to its original releases. Combine this with the changes in graphics like the Red Cross on health packs. An "original experience" of Classic Doom games are no longer possible in the modern market any more. Again, I know its mostly small stuff a lot of people probably wouldn't care about. And really it doesn't "hurt" the experience of them. It' just the original image is long gone.

Fun fact: To date, the OG Xbox port of classic Doom is still the only way I've ever experienced that game. I've always loved that it felt super true to the original game, with the super low resolution and everything. I genuinely feel that the high resolution of future ports kinda changes the experience in a negative way. I know I'm crazy for feeling this way, but it's the truth. Back in the day, Resurrection of Evil was worth owning purely for being able to play Ultimate Doom + Doom 2 in a relatively good state on a console.

This is one of those versions of Doom that I really would like to get my hands on at some point. It's pretty fascinating. :D > "Randomized sound pitches." That was actually a feature in the original DOS version of Doom up until…1.4, I think? The DMX sound library's SFX play routine had an argument for pitch adjustment, which the original DOS version took advantage of. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on your opinion), the updated version of DMX they switched to during Doom II's development changed around the parameters for that function, inserting a panning parameter before the pitch parameter. id didn't end up catching that (to be fair, library developers _really_ shouldn't break their APIs when adding new features!), so from that point forward randomized pitches were replaced by very slight randomized panning shifts. Some source ports have restored the original behavior, of course. > "The SSG is in the wrong slot." Internally the chainsaw is in slot 8 and the SSG is in slot 9. Not a huge deal when you're selecting weapons with the number row, but it sounds like Xbox Doom's weapon select just cycles through weapons via their internal ordering. Oof. :( It's a shame they didn't put in a special case for the SSG, as that would have made it much more intuitive.

If I remember correctly, SNES DooM was also missing most of the directional sprites for the monsters, so they all end up always facing the player and SNES DooM's shotgun is technically a rifle it only fires one pellet per shot. Though I could be wrong...

@@lancebaylis3169 Yeah, the maps that appear in SNES Doom are _very_ faithful to their PC counterparts, unlike the mapsets in most other console ports back then. But the game itself has its own custom engine, providing similar but different gameplay than the PC original.

I can't fathom al these various additions people have been putting into the ports of Doom. Who the hell are these people who actually work in a professional environment, but are making the most brain-dead adjustments that look like things a 12-year old made in three hours when they first got a doom editor in 1995? Pitch adjustment sounds like a good idea, but they have the most absurd values set. Using the chainsaw in Doom Classic complete (PS3) is the most perfect example of this. Colored lighting effects with highly-saturated colors that no artist would ever pick. Secret level that you find in the most obtuse ways that break the rules for level design, only to find the level itself is complete garbage with nukage floors everywhere. And lets not forget the Unity-powered "port" that completely removed the ending to Doom! And to top it all off, these are coming out in eras where people are making mods that are of the highest quality, producing full games in their own right of the highest caliber. But the people who get to make and sell the actual ports couldn't design their way out of a cardboard box.

Can’t you also just play it on PS4 / PS5 / SWITCH of classic Doom and Doom II ? If you link a Bethesda account to it yol even be able to play some available wads including Sigil , Sigil II . I feel like that’s better then the Xbox versions of Doom(s)

The fact that the cheat codes were often accidentality accessed by normal button presses that would be incurred through normal use of the controller? To me that indicates just how TRASH the OG Xbox Doom ports were.

It more.indicates that they didn't really consider that when implementing the cheat menu. I wouldn't describe this port as trash.
