This city has so much going for it! Really is an interesting town with its own vibes and life. None the less, its still high crime.

I've lived here for 53 years. You got off the interstate and headed directly into town which is the historical section of Spartanburg. You completely missed the area directly off the interstate, the Westgate area. That area has the mall and many larger chain stores and restaurants. There are many low income areas around Spartanburg but are few and far between. You missed all of the nicer areas of Spartanburg and all of the nice people. That's what makes Spartanburg "Sparkle City". You passed by the Beacon restaurant which famous people once flew in by helicopter to the field that once was across the street, just to eat her. You drove right by NuWay and missed their awesome "Redneck Burger. You chose to eat at Mr. Gatty's which is horrible but drove right by Venus Pie which has the best, mouth watering pizza, in my opinion, in the state. If you come through again, instead of pointing out the bad points and making our city look bad, find someone that knows the city that can really show why our city "Sparkles".

I'm gonna try to be a "southern gentleman" from Spartanburg. I've traveled everywhere in the country pretty much. Been to 31 states, from the northeast in the White mountains, New York, D.C., central plains in Texas, Oklahoma, I've lived in Nashville Tennessee 2 yrs, Western N.C. in Asheville for a year, in Hollywood Fla. for 2 years, Lakewood Colorado for 3 years, traveled to Cali a few time, Utah, ect ect. I think you get it. But I gotta tell you, you guys really just breezed through and ate and left. You went by Main street several times and you saw all of the life in town. But each time you went by you commented about hey do you want to get out with these people hey let's get out with these people kind of doing it in a sarcastic way like you were above the people or in an arrogant way. I think that you missed just a small part of the tight knit community that is Spartanburg South Carolina. For the most part the people here are phenomenal there's a real sense of community here over seven colleges and universities. Over the last 10 years that's been a culture that has developed in the downtown area and surging outward into the surrounding suburbs. Spartanburg has grown faster than the top 5% of any United States city. Of course it is a part of a much larger thing which is the Greenville Spartanburg metropolitan area where you have a total of over 24 colleges together in the metropolitan area including Urban development and industry like BMW and all of the companies that surround and support them. My point being is the Spartanburg community is so broad and so large and you only saw a very small part of it. But even in the parts that you were in the project says he called it. There are good people everywhere and I don't think we should judge by that. Furthermore people commented that this area was underdevelopment, Spartanburg is growing. But the main point is Spartanburg is a community of people that really in the most part tries to help one another yes every town has it's negative. I can tell you this with every place that I've been there's no place like home and Spartanburg is home I've learned that this truly is where my heart is I mean come on man you're less than 30 minutes away from the southern end of the Appalachian mountains the foothills of the Blue Ridge. The mountains in high country of Western North Carolina are about an hour away but you only have to drive into the Northern parts of Spartanburg county to see places like Landrum, Inman, ect before you are staring at the beautiful peaks of the Blue ridge 3,000 ft ahead of you. But if you prefer the beach we're only 4 hours away. What I'm saying is Spartanburg is quaint and that it is a small southern town but it has a sense of community like no other I've seen in all the places that I've been and I've seen some great communities. I am kind of partial because I was born in Spartanburg and I was raised there. But I'm proud to say Spartanburg is the best place on Earth as far as a place to live. They say home is where the heart is and my home is Spartanburg. And that's SPAR-TAN-BURG!. My suggestion would be that you guys come out and next time ride through town and get out and talk to people and check out the shops and the restaurants and even the bars have a good time learn that life in Spartanburg is great. Meet some of the people here see the sense of community. I just kind of hope that you'll come back in the next time that you'll get a better guide to help you get around and see some of the places that make Spartanburg the most beautiful place on Earth to live. I thank God for home.

Spartanburg isn’t that bad. For the most part, it’s a chill place.

My town is not as bad as you made it seem in this video. Those “projects” you rode through are currently in the process of being torn down; that’s why it looked that way. You were able to drive through with no issue, so the “hood” is not as bad as you make it seem. Next time you come, have someone that is actually from here take you around. You’ll be able to see the growth better. The people aren’t bad either; maybe you should talk to some before you judge.

Not sure where y’all from but it’s the dramatics are wild. Every city had “hoods” and just cause an area LOOKS bad doesn’t mean it’s “hot”. Our city is growing so much and making so many changes. Hopefully y’all actually get to see more positive areas next time.

Spartanburg is not as bad as some people are trying to make it seem, just like every city there's a bad side and a good side

People are moving into the Spartansburg,Greenville area,alot of people ,it's actually a retiree alternative to Florida.
@tiffsjourney877
I have lived in Spartanburg for 43 yrs. Born and raised. It is HOME. Also, there is alot more to Spartanburg than what you see in this vid. They decided to ride through Highland aka the hood. There are "hoods" in every state.

You passed by the street where I live in the early part of the video. The apartments at Norris Ridge are boarded up because people have moved out and the place is going to be demolished soon. A new apartment complex to replace it is under construction several blocks away. Spartanburg’s crime and murder rate has increased recently, as has happened in a lot of places since the pandemic, and the city has set up a task force to look at the issue. More info about Spartanburg: the immediate Spartanburg area has 7 colleges.

Spartanburg is a great place to live. Great how? It's cheap. But not cheap in a bad way, however in terms of travel. Have a job in Greenville? Commute from here. Fantastic food and nature. You're less than an hour from Western NC, which is my favorite place in the world due to it's beauty. 2.5 hrs from Atlanta, and 1.5 hrs from Charlotte. You'll have endless events to go to being in the center of these markets. The city has work to do for sure, but it's become an amazing place the past ten years I've lived here.

I'm from The Burg. Grew up in the early 80's behind Wofford College. The majority of my family is from this city. I went to Cleveland Elementary as a kid. Teenager I attended Whitlock Jr. High. My 9th and 10th grade year I attended Dorman High School. I left The Burg in 93" relocated never looked back. @ the age of 48, I have kids and grandkids. Now I'm residing in Georgia where I call my home. The Burg has it's good and bad spots to live. Every city has a hood just like every town has an Elm Street( in my FreddyKrueger voice).Overall it was a good place to live growing up.

The windows are boarded because they are building a new Norris Ridge and the residents/apartments they have already moved out of the complex covered the windows so others won't bust out the windows or do damage to the empty apartments

I live in Landrum, about 15 to 20 min from Spartanburg. The nickname is "Sparkle City". It does have more crime and is a bit rougher than Greenville. The restaurants downtown are pretty good.

The West side of Spartanburg has Saxon, Park Hill & Highlands neighborhoods is the hood, but not even the highest crime rate in the country. Also left turn lanes should be used.
