From all these SCP articles, it's clear that none of the foundation persons want to. The desires of not existing anymore have, in many articles, shown to have horrible consequences. One thing I see repeated in most articles is that many of the persons writing these seem to not want to die. -or something. That they do not accept death as a natural process. I have yet to see someone in a foundation article to accept the inevitability of death. There's a lot of ascending death and stuff like that in the SCP universe. Which is probably why a lot of southeastern type articles are rare, though this is just a possible idea. Southeastern ideas often have to do with acceptance of death and such. I wonder if anyone who writes these articles understand nihilism or absurdism. The foundation just doesn't want to die.

That bit about her childhood got me good. My grandma had Alzheimer's, and the worst part of the entire ordeal was one time I went to visit her, and she thought I was my cousin. She was convinced, because she was certain she didn't have a grandson. That ripped me up inside, and it was hard to think of her the same way, because how are you supposed to feel about a person who literally forgot you exist? It almost makes the whole story seem like an allegory for dementia: you lose your memory, it's nobody's fault (including your own), it's usually unavoidable, and by the time it's done there's nothing left. True horror.
@ladisgust

My grandma always thought I was her husband. Which was kinda weird. I felt so bad for her. Idk it's so sad for me to see but oddly enough it doesn't scare me to think of it happening to me as much as it does other people. My grandma was always so happy when she had it and didn't seem to have much of a care in the world. Though I'm sure it depends on the person whether that is the case. If that's how it happened to me thought I could see it as almost peaceful. Just kinda drifting off into the void of my mind.

@@wittykittywoes Nah, it's just a moment in history. Dealing with someone who is losing their mental faculties, you can either refuse to accept that it's happening and be lost in a grieving process, or you move on real fast. When I was no longer recognized by my grandma, I started to let go, so I was prepared for everything that came after. It's like talking to ghosts at that point.

As someone caring for someone with severe dementia this hit in a really strange manner, seeing someone forget themselves is indescribable especially the feelings it invokes, almost too ironic that the only people that don´t care for that person "leaving their body" , while those close to them have to carry on the burden, are the people with severe dementia themselves, since they can´t remember being themselves in the first place.

Theory - The SCP is “The Mimic”, Elizabeth’s mind is the cell, and her journey/struggle/logs are the containment procedures. The Mimic might be a mind parasite that possesses no form of its own and is dependent of what the human mind can imagine or perceive It to be the manifest shape, but by doing that, it also alters the mind of the host. It absorbs but also reflects, as it takes shape it cannot avoid that the host’s mind react to it. Elizabeth is a Foundation professional either in a induced coma or a hypnotic state, and precisely because this, it cannot provide the Mimic with any other sources but what she already have - I also assume that the Mimic cannot leave the host mind when they are unconscious, or the foundation might have a reality anchor to prevent it from leaving Elizabeth’s mind. This way, it have a limited supply. Hence the “folding within itself” description, since Elizabeth can’t make new memories or have new interactions to serve as material for imagination, it’s only a matter of time until all she perceive her thoughts and memories as something the Mimic might be, well, transformed as. This is fuel for loosing notion of real and imagined, what might be what’s causing her memory to fade. What I think it’s happening here is - The Foundation have a person in induced coma, for god knows how long, while they watches this person’s mind decaying until “there won’t be no light for the Mimic to reflect”, putting it poetically. Elizabeth’s fate was an Astronaut Meme: “Is everything ‘The Mimic’?” / “It always was” And this is fucking horrifying, but it’s a cold calculated act that the Foundation would be willing to enact if it resulted into an effective containment (or even neutralization) of a dangerous mind parasite. And we know that they have done worse. Tl;dr - Mimic is a cognitohazard parasite that needs the imagination of the host to take shape. If the host perceives the mimic as what it is - therefore imagining it as “The Mimic” - It have no other exit but to reveal itself. A mind that is deprived from new memories and inspiration have a limited supply for the Mimic, but it muddle the water of what are genuine memories and what aren’t, which turns the anomalous effect on itself, but at the cost of said mind. In short, the Foundation is doing with Elizabeth what happened in the finale of “Gravity Falls”, but at a way lengthier pace.

There were always terrifying scps even at the start of the foundation. The original scps were mostly terrifying in fact and often involved sacrificing D class personnel like lab rats since the knowledge they gain was more important than the lives of the human guinea pigs. Sort of like being okay will killing a few lab rats to cure cancer but instead with your own species and something supernaturally worse than cancer

the entire SCP reminds me a lot of a real mental condition... Dementia. A "monster" that can take any shape, and removes all the memories of a person, usually starting with the oldest, non impactful memories (like forgetting your favorite childhood TV show, but remembering seeing your grandmother for the last time) and as it progresses you lose more and more, eventually your name, how to talk, and even how to breath properly in some cases. I personally believe that she didn't kill the beast in the end, she only forgot that it existed, or that she was ever more than just the beast. I think that's why in the end she writes in the third person about killing it, because she didn't kill it, the "mimic" became her, and everything she could ever think of. Even down to the suicide part, there are a lot of Alzheimer's patients who commit suicide because forgetting your name on a daily basis is a incredibly depressing thing. OR it's just a fictional story about a fictional person in a fictional dimension, made just for the fun of it... Anyway, I'll stop lecturing about dementia now, great article, great narration, can't wait for more!

I lost my grandmother to CJD a few months ago so this scp in particular scares the crap out of me. Seeing what a disease like that can do to peoples minds really helps you appreciate little things like being able to remember your age or a phone number or even your grandkids names.

I have great affection for these psychological tales/articles. The feeling of slipping away and forgetting yourself is common to dementia, but it's also common to heavy psychedelic trips that involve ego death. The difference between one and the other is, one you come back from, the other you don't. It sounds like the music of The Caretaker would be appropriate listening while reading this article.

What if the file ended with: This file was found within the SCP Foundation Archives. There are no records for any individuals known as Elizabeth Graham ever working at the Foundation. The origin of these files is unknown. That would've meant that either not only does SCP-3890-2 erase memories of your past but it also erases your past completely and now she no longer exists in our world, or she was from another world and 3890 can access other worlds.

For the past year and a half I've watched my grandmother, who I've always been very very close with, slip away into dementia. I listened to this video a long time ago, and it while it certainly struck a cord with me then, it hits a lot harder now. I've watched the sweet old lady I know and love slip away into a shell of a person, who has no recollection of where she is, what year it is (she repeatedly states that she thinks its 1968), who we, her family, are, and honestly I'd be surprised if she even knew what planet shes on. It's the most heartbreaking thing I've ever had to witness in my life. This scp definitely hits that heartbreak, but not in a bad way. It speaks to it in a unexpectedly profound and deep way. And honestly, it makes me cry.
