You read the size of the 'giant' as greater than 300 metres. In the real story the size was greater than 300 *miles.* That makes a lot more sense for the quantities of grease involved.

A bit of background - this SCP was inspired by a Doom level called “The Mucus Flow”, which is notoriously difficult and features green goo or mucus flooding the whole level. After you finally beat it, your reward is learning that the source of the mucus was a comically large nose at the top of the level, which is a hilariously stupid anticlimax to what was a rather challenging fight. This SCP was meant to capture the feel of that level by mixing gross-out elements with a dangerous environment and a silly “punchline”. That said, I’m also put in mind of that one Junji Ito manga Glyceride, which I was surprised wasn’t an inspiration.

@BLK_MN

Ironically, that stark ending actually terrifies me more. I’d say that description fits a cosmic or eldritch horror that defies comprehension and causes madness. An unfeeling monstrosity that causes despair and devastation by it’s presence, and our proximity to it is irrelevant to the universe, or some grand design.

Phase 0 Spontaneous Defensive Behavior, Phase 1 Denial, Phase 2 Experimentation, Phase 3 Stability, and Phase 4 The Child-God. But that's part of GOC's classification system for Type Greens. To my knowledge the Foundation itself doesn't have a specific classification for phases of ontokinetics, they're just another anomaly to them.

The Mucus Flow tie-in mentioned by the author's discussion post might bear mentioning. Ultimately the source of the toxic slime is a joke, a deliberate anticlimax - not really part of the "intended" experience of surviving the strange world, but a goofy easter egg for the few people determined enough to hunt down all its secrets.

The absurdity of the ending really makes it work well I think, because there is no grand reason, no ultimate reveal that puts everything into perspective, it's just... senseless. How can you reason with something which has no reason. Ultimately their efforts in that place were pointless.
@jackrylebonclaw7270
@jackrylebonclaw7270 Жыл бұрын
Definitely. Some stories try a bit too hard to tie everything up with a reason or a moral, and end up murdering the climax with the tedium of causality instead. The image of a god-sized couch potato scoffing fast food and destroying a continent with the culinary debris (the minor earthquakes were probably bun-crumbs falling to the ground, the big one was when a sauce-slick sliver of onion slid out of the back of the sandwich) is equally as horrifying as the corrosive grease itself, if not more so. Especially if you visualise it in the art style that The Dark Somnium uses for his video thumbnails.

@quicksilvertongue3248
@quicksilvertongue3248 7 ай бұрын
Terrifying, maybe not, if you're the kind of person who doesn't read much into existentialism and similar concepts. If you find much of the writing of HP Lovecraft boring or silly, or you think the imagery in Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dali is just random nonsense, then something combining those vibes isn't going to work on you. It's like going to a magic show with the mentality of debunking it. There are charlatans in the world, and the ability to call them on their bs is valuable, but it's a bit strange to get into SCP, which tends very strongly toward abstract philosophical horrors, if you're a very pragmatic person who only gets scared by very straightforwardly dangerous things. A few early skips are just monsters that gruesomely kill you, but most of this fandom responds more to things that are scary to think about, even when you know they're fictional.

The whole thing was really mysterious and dark until the mention of an old man eating a burger and immediately I remember myself eating a bigmac and the only thing that would have made the tale much more funny or relatable is if there were rivers of viscous red liquid that melted everything and moved like lava but also had a layer of watery oil over it, turning out to be spilling ketchup as I love dumping ketchup on burgers. I guess the author was hungry while writing this article.

So, O5-13 says that it's foundation policy to rescue staff at all costs, staff are their most valuable resource ect, ect and then in the next breath orders his team to abandon rescue attempts and cut off communication without even telling them about it. He says it's most ethical to stop giving them the illusion of support, which is false and a bad call. Would have been best to tell the team they'd abandoned the rescue so that the team could make some efforts of their own instead of waiting in vain for a rescue that's not coming.

Honestly the expedition didint read at all like a SCP expedition log. The agents were really unprofessional and acted nothing like a seasoned anomaly explorers. There were weird circumstances on how the group was made and the existence of theese IEG and DST organizations makes the whole document suspicious. If this was part of the Broken Masquerade and theese were like some normies made to work with the foundation then i would see this happening, but not in the "mainline" foundation.

Ok, that O5 message confused me. I’ll probably need to look at the actual document just to make sure. Spoilers below! “We’re going to rescue our personnel at all costs, but we’re going to write off the team as already lost despite their still being alive.” “We’re only strongly recommending that resources be reallocated, but they’ll be reallocated immediately without any attempt at an alternative plan.” “We’re going to stop giving the team the illusion of support, but we’re also not going to tell them that they’re on their own, and that they should stop waiting for rescue.” Is this basically confirmation of that team member saying “we’re treating our staff like numbers instead of humans, and we’re going to abandon them to cut costs, but record the decision in a way that saves face on paper” ?

It feels strangely glossed over, but I'm loving the idea of this being post-CK event. It's always presented in articles like a reality restructuring event is cataclysmic or reality-ending, but here not only has one happened, but the Foundation is still in contact with the reality bender who caused it. How many scips end up in world-ending events where the Foundation just reorganizes to maintain the Veil of that new normal?
