That one Pokemon based on the fertility deity is a concept I myself adapted into a new Pokemon called Trumpetoid, a mono Dark type that plays music through its elongated nose like a flute or a trumpet and lulls enemies into sleep so as to make a getaway, or even steal things from people. If a Pokemon or a person is agitated, a Trumpetoid can play calming music to calm said patients. I even have an idea for a Mega Evolution where it obtains the look of a snake charmer with flaps of hair curling into a turban, sits with crossed legs, floats slightly off the ground like Mega Alakazam, and it gains the Psychic type.

The more I look at that longship pokemon design the more and more it looks like it got reworked into Lugia. It's got the same head and those stripes probably became the fin things on its back. It would certainly explain why Lugia is associated with the ocean to begin with.
@Subjectively4 күн бұрын
Oh maybe! I can see the resemblance
@nuggit64803 күн бұрын
While I see the resemblance, Lugia was initially designed for the movie it appeared in. And it was initially called Pokemon X, with an “X” pattern on its belly. I think there’s a DYKG video explaining it in depth. So I doubt it.
@HaughtyToast3 күн бұрын
@@nuggit6480 The original design had that but they scrapped it clearly. They probably lifted traits from this one to make the completed version. Pokemon does that sort of thing a lot with its designs. Early versions of Nuzleaf had a flute nose which is similar to the original Celebi concept. One of the dex entries even mentions the flute nose even though it isn't there anymore. There was an old interview that said Giritina was originally conceived as a chimera as well. If you look at it's original design, it seems to have had parts of it used for Type: Null/Silvally which is also a chimera. Cleffa's early sprite has traits similar to an unused top-like pokemon that appeared on an old magazine which seems to have later become Hitmontop. Sometimes they just seem to really like certain pieces of designs and try to mix and match them. There are even more examples like this out there yet.

A lot of gen 1 Pokemon were designed as sprites first, similar to the ones that intrigued you in Gen 5. IIRC that's how Atsuko Nishida actually designed Pikachu- as a sprite first that was later refined into the mascot we know today. :>

Your idea for an alternate Thundurus would actually work really well with the gen 5 games' focus on the seasons. Instead of 3 (later 4) genies, what if we got one genie that changes form with the season? Enamorus is spring, Thundurus is summer, Landorus is autumn and Tornadus is winter.

As a pixel artist who doesn't know how to draw traditionally, sketching in pixels is definitely something I'm familiar with! It can sometimes be tough to recreate the feeling of something in pixel art purely based off of reference, and being able to sketch it out and then refine the lines and colors later is helpful much the same way I imagine it is for regular artists. It's also not only a restriction of the medium as is mentioned in the video! Even with non-sprite sketches available, a pixel art sketch can still be a useful tool to get started.

14:42 I love the idea of creatively working your signature into a piece of art like that. Something similar I did in a school project once was writing out my name's individual letters in the shapes of random objects of a panoramic piece (or whatever a child's drawing of a town's edge with mountain landscape in the background + random shenanigans in the details counts as), so if you found all of them, you just needed to read them left to right to get back to my name. If you strike a fine balance particularly well, more or less like in the case of this pokemon design, you can make your name work double duty as a signature and detail work. You just need to manage to make it both be recognizable and spottable enough to work as the former while also being integrated into the piece naturally enough to work as the latter

Re: the genie trio - you have me a bit intrigued by the thought of collapsing them into one Pokemon. I'd go about it a little differently - give it 3 formes it can change between - a Thunderus-like forme, a Tornadus-like one, and a Landorus-like one. Each looks a bit like the incarnate formes we know, but animations will show them "unfold" and slip out of the clouds when attacking, and you catch a glimpse of the more distinct Therian formes underneath. Side tangent: So Ive always had a problem with the narrative design of pokemon games where you run into a roadblock in the game and and you only need an HM to remove it. It's nice design choice but kind of dull when you can teach HMs at any level. I think a great iteration the formula would applying a souls like skill point leveling system that has moves with stat thresholds to make each mon more unique to their palyers.

I think you’re the first professional artist to make a video about the newest batch of proto Pokémon, and boy did I enjoy your analysis! Keeping speculation to an absolute minimum and crediting TCRF? A KZbinr after my own heart. You’re wrong about the Pokémon creation process starting off with concept art that is wildly different from the default Pokémon art style. What’s missing from the R/S development page on the TCRF page is a quote from Masuda where he shares that as Pokémania waned after gen 2, he felt a ton of pressure to prove Pokémon was more than a fad. My memory is really fuzzy and I’m having trouble finding the relevant interview. I remember someone else saying in a different occasion saying something like "there was a lot of experimentation with R/S to take the games to the next level." IIRC, that applies to the Pokémon designs as well. If the unusual concept art wasn’t an attempt to push Pokémon "forward," then the more realistic and less cutesy art was probably a result of the trend toward edgier design in the 2000s. GF made the right decision to maintain the core pillars of Pokémon design that were established in the 90s, which made for more timeless Pokémon. Don’t know if you missed it but there’s a half finished Sugimorized sprite of Psycho Dog in the sprite scratchpads. It suggests they did a lot more with the weird concept art than make Cacturne. Also some of the early sprites for gen 3 have a softer look and use pastel colors, what’s up with that? Please do another video on scrapped Pokémon. There’s plenty of material in there and I can’t believe how content creators don’t do anything with it other than reactions and other surface level observations.

I like the idea of a role reversal with the boat Pokémon. Sort of how Dragonite and Gyaradose are opposites to their irl counterparts (a Western dragon that has the temperament of an Eastern one and an Eastern sea serpent that has the temperament of a Western one). The viking ship could be a Water/Dragon that pretends to be friendly and fair passengers across the sea, but half of its trips end with the entire group of passengers "mysteriously" disappearing 😋.

To me, I read the monolith as part of its body. Like an erect tail in the right image. To make the left image make sense (which I admit is hard for me), I guess it's got cuboid and rectangular segments that can like twist and rotate. I imagine the monolith came first, and it was so saturated in mystic energies that it sort of pulled together a golem to propel itself.
