Exploring the WORST RATED Golf Course in the UK!

This course is a real frustration as it could be brilliant. However, firstly it was the subject to the curse of Crown Golf who almost ruined other Surrey clubs like Pyrford and Hampton Court before they were rescued by GetGolfing. The ownership changed hands (to Lavershot Oaks, then renamed Wooldridge i think) in 2020 and more recently planning was submitted to completely redevelop the course and facilities, but using 'inert materials' i.e. landfill. Understandably the locals have objected to this proposal. but more concerning is the current owner Wooldridge filed for Administration in January. So I very much doubt there will be any course renovation soon (unless someone like GetGolfing buy it, and i very much hope they do).

This course was where I went to college 20 years ago and it was a great track. Hopefully something happens and it’s revived back to its former glory

Wow! Played Merrist years ago and it was a nice course. I believe Crown sold it and transferred its members to Milford (Its always been said for development, so its being run into the ground intentionally assuming to put a case forward that it doesnt work as a golf course). Then they hiked the Milford costs up, for what at the time was a substandard course too.

This course could be a great as the layout is fantastic. My understanding is the current owners want to keep it as a golf club but redesign is held up in the planning process, hence the lack of activity in upkeep..

It was designed to be quite a marquee course originally. It had championship credentials off the backs.

I went to college at Merrist Wood back in 1992. Then we played weekly at Silvermere which back then was pretty horrendous too.

@@ellisrogers01 I don't think so. I was the second intake there doing a management course designed, I think, to get you into a club pro job later. We were part of Kingston university in those days. I was just there as I didn't get into St.Andrews on a golf scholarship 😂

Great video, and thank you for doing this. Played this course first years ago on a recommendation and thought it was fantastic. Very challenging, but a great test and really enjoyable. Played again last year and was gutted to see how it had been left to ruin away.. Layout and design are all there if someone would invest in it, but it has housing development written all over it I'm afraid 😢

Apparently it used to be a lot better - I think it was maintained by the students of the college its attached to. I played it a year or so ago and genuinely lost 3 balls in the fairway

was a member there in the 90;'s. Although unplayable in the winter it was one of the best courses around then. 6909 yards long and always in fantastic nick. What a shame to see this.

A bit of a pointless video as a golf course review, but I guess you're just playing for kicks, or rather clicks. The course has effectively been closed for over four years, and kept going with minimal maintenance to bring in a few quid while the planning application to redevelop it goes through. As a founder member when it opened in 1997, I can vouch for the fact that it was a great layout, but sadly it never had the management capability or ongoing investment which would have ensured it grew into a great course.
