Investigating the WORST RATED Golf Course in Surrey!

As much as people hate on places like this (perhaps justifiably in some cases), golf needs courses like this. It makes the game accessible to beginners. Cheap and cheerful, not too challenging and not overly busy.

Brilliant comment! People are always complaining that golf is too expensive, but you can easily get a full set of clubs for £50-£100, go out and try some cheap courses like this. Then when you are fully addicted, justify spending most of your disposable income on it!! 😂

@@JackMagic22exactly! When I started playing, I was always terrified of the busy courses and what the golfers there thought of me. If I had a place like this to hone my skills I would have loved it. Much less pressure.

I live in Pyrford, and just a few hundred yards from Twisted Stone. It used to be an 18 hole course, but the owner sold 120 acres of the course to a local resident, hence why it's now only 9 holes. I think the course is fine for beginners, or those who don't want the hassle of a 4+ hour round on an 18 hole course. You should revisit the course once we've had some heavy rain...most, if not all, greens will be underwater for at least a couple of days making it unplayable. If you want a proper round of golf, head less than a mile down the road to Pyrford Lakes, where I'm a member. Stunning condition, every hole features water, and a spectacular vista looking back at the course when enjoying a post round beverage!

And i have actually played Pyrford Lakes (was one of my first ever golf youtube videos (it’s awful)) but i’ll have to play it again because it was a fantastic course, i think at the time i played it your clubhouse was under construction.

Big fan of Pyrford Lakes, it’s got to be one of the most welcoming places I’ve been to. it’s busy and can be slow but that’s the downside of getting a lot of things right - it gets popular!!

This course is surprisingly quite fun and the owners are rly nice genuine people, after 7pm it is free, cannot complain!!

You should go and have a nose around Pachesham. Range, short game area, putting green and a decent 6 hole set up. Great value and quick to get around!

I think a lot of clubs are missing a trick with Par 3’s. I play at a course in Nottingham called Edwalton. They have a full 9/18 hole course, but also have a really well kept 9 hole course which is just as popular as the main course. My wife is just starting out so when we play together we play the par 3 and it’s just as good a condition as the main course. 9 holes is a tenner on the par 3 and you can get round in about an hour or so.

When this was Traditions Golf Club that was owned by Crown Golf and was a great 18, did sometimes get a little wet but was playable, shame to see if has gone so downhill

When they Opened the Wisley around the corner, all the rich members left. Same for Pyrford, though they are making a bit of a comeback - sad to see courses fail, hopefully someone will reinvest - tho unlikely given the competition around it

Pyrford is now so expensive, especially at peak time like Saturday morning which is one of the only 2 times a week I can get a game in. Similar story for Sutton Green and others nearby. Shame.

Wisley opened in 1991, Traditions (what it used to be called) in 1999 and Pyrford 1993. I'm not sure the future members of Pyrford ditched a course that hadn't been built yet to go to Wisley...!

I played there maybe 5 years ago when it was an 18 hole course and it was pretty ropey then, so never played again. Maybe as a 9 hole with some investment it's improved. However, it's by far not the worst course in Surrey, that prize goes to Merrist Wood north of Guildford. Not sure if you already played it as your channel just popped up, but if not go and give it a try. It used to be a decent and challenging 18 hole course. Was taken over for redevelopment a few years ago, supposedly to be completely re-designed/re-laid as a championship course with new clubhouse and other facilities like a Spa. Allegedly the owners have been wrangling with the council over planning for 3+ years (probably like TS actually want to convert 1/2 to a housing estate!), so its now a very poorly maintained 9 hole. The greens are absolutely appalling, such a shame.

The land was scoped for housing but the fact its a flood plain concerned locals (flood water would have to disperse somewhere) who managed to club together and purchase the land. So its not really there for the golf but more to protect the locals from further housing and the impact on the environment caused by these types of developments.

It's a shame, as an 18 hole golf course it wasn't that bad although during the winter at least 9 of the holes closed themselves for 3-4 months as it was so wet. Surprised they managed to build houses on those bit, hope the new homeowners were given a snorkel on completion!

They probably have two yardages so you can play it twice as an 18 hole course. Confusing not to have the colours properly marked or have holes labelled as 1/10, 2/11 etc but I’d guess that was the intention when putting out the boards

This course opened on 1999 and was designed by peter alliss. From 2003/7 off the whites you would never got under 100! Seen your swing!!! Its started going down hill when the private club nearby The Wisely nicked the green keeper. Yes its get wet because there is a canal going the course thats higher and overflows and leaks but they got it sorted at one point. Euro pro tour played there in the years above. The stoke index 1 had so many complains from the pros because OB right, tree lined with a 200 yard carry to hit fairway only 30 yards wide and a wet ditch on the left. Some where coming in with over 10 on that one hole. Back then it was one of the best pay and play in Surrey. The greens where great then. Some Irish bloke took it over around 2015 look like he got what he could out of it and run. Shame it was much better than pryford at that time.

I think 3 stars is fair. It's a fun, cheap 9 holer and it has it's place in the golf landscape of the country. However giving it 5 stars when there are very few worse golf courses in the uk is a bit of a reach! I played this course years ago when it was an 18 hole course called Traditions GC. I went regularly and really enjoyed the course. Looking at Google maps of the course you can see some of the long holes that are no longer in use around the water in the south of the property. There were some good holes and it's very sad the course has had such a downturn.

Traditions used to be great ,I used to play it as a member of Crown golf the poor relation to what was comically referred to as Royal Pyrford as they were so up themselves ,pitch and put course with water.🤣.Merrist wood should have been the jewel in the Crown they trained green keepers there,but we offloaded our shit green keeper there from Cams Hall and the rest is history.

There isnt enough courses like this. At least in Surrey. Pay and pay is rare. Most are expensive private members courses with very high visitor green fees, often only available outside of the popular tee times. We need more of this kind of couse. Giving affordable access to youngsters, beginners, and casual players. Gets my vote.

Yes they got rid of the little one in Pirbright, the Windlemere 9 by Gordon's School and Rokers 9 hole by Merist Wood. All were decent for a quickie. About 12 years ago they were all an option.

Be careful with your scoring... on the 4th, appreciate not going back to the tee, should have been two shots drop so chipping for 4 and in for 5. Just helps scoring credibility even though not really the focus of video

I played it as Traditions probably 15 years ago but we were standing on the first tee for ten minutes watching the 4 ball in front going about their business then we were off after getting to the 9th after 3 hours of torture we went home. Shame really as the course was OK'ish but on its way down.

The greens and tee boxes are pretty shocking but staff are really nice and from the last couple times I’ve been it does seem they’re starting to fix it up 😅 Hope you enjoy your round when you go

@@ellisrogers01 i havent been there since the late 90's mate. last i heard it got rebulit in to a housing estate. but the bunkers had dog poo, beer bottles, and rusted old stolen mopeds in them. one of the holes (a sharp dog leg right), you had to play a 3 wood over a gypsy caravan site. you paid a fiver for 9 holes then sneaked under the the bridge of the main road to play the last nine holes, so 18 holes for a fiver wernt bad back in the late 90's. it was a challengening course, right under the flight path of heathrow airport, sometimes the planes would come in so low you could read the tyre manufactuer names on the landing gear.
