Exploring Vienna’s most dangerous neighbourhood!

When we were living in Vienna 2001-2005, the back entrance to Karlsplatz was an area where drug/alcohol users would hang out. They would hassle the women who passed by there. Some of my friends lived near there and couldn't avoid the area. There was always a strong police presence near our home in the First District. We could almost always see at least one policeman. They would patrol in pairs, and one of them would be carrying a fully-automatic firearm. However, I doubt that most people even noticed that they were there, unless they needed to ask for directions. I was aware of them mainly because I work a lot with the folks who provide security for facilities. We felt safe in Vienna, except for the few times there were anti-US demonstrations in our area. As an American, it was scary to walk past a person carrying a "Death to America" sign less than 100 meters from our front door. The "high crime" areas in Vienna would probably be considered some of the safest areas in US cities. There are areas in my city where I am uncomfortable going, even during the day. Muggings and shootings happen frequently here. The low crime rate is one of the things I miss about Vienna.

Yeah we tried to put it into relation as much as possible. Vienna is definitely far away from any serious crime issue. However it has been our priority to keep our visitors informed! Not all neighborhoods are safe at any time.

You are right on! This area is nothing compared to places in the US where homelessness is everywhere and druggies are walking around like zombies. I lived in NYC, Seattle and Honolulu and locals here in Favoriten do not know what real crime and low quality of living really is. All they do is complaint about the littlest things. Its a joke!

Thanks for your video. I've had some of the best Turkish food in Vienna around Reumannplatz. To emphasize the 10th district's "hugeness", I think it's also worth pointing out that the following are also in Favoriten: the Bohemian Prater, the cultural centre in the former Anker bread factory, Kurpark Oberlaa, and the Wienerberg-Wienerbergteich green space.

Just returned from 6 nights in Vienna, stayed a 2 monute walk from the Troststraße underground and would go to Reumannplatz for breakfast occasionally and at nighttime for a kebab before hoping back on the underground one more stop. Whereas the place was very very busy late at night, noisey and with a few dodgy looking characters, never did I feel unsafe or threatened. People kept themselves to themselves and we were never bothered, approached or hassled once. Vienna as a whole felt extremely safe, and I really enjoyed my time there.

Thanks for the heads up. When I was looking for accommodations in Vienna, the Airbnbs around Reumannplatz and Keplerplatz seemed suspiciously inexpensive. That said, I would still go by to try a Döner at Ferhat Döner. Long lines of locals in front of a restaurant usually mean good eating.

As long as you avoid late hours it is possibly good bang for buck since it has a very fast connection to the center. It is also relative to what you compare it too, I would say cities like Prague are currently safer than Vienna overall, but Vienna is million miles safer than Brussels for example.

I love that area! Reumanplatz with the beautiful Amalienbad, the Antoniskirche and Victor Adler Markt are so interesting and great. Never felt dangerous!

even before I watch this, obviously, I dont live in Vienna (yet 😢), but over last couple yrs, I would spend entire days wondering around the city, literally every district, sometimes walking through neighborhoods, whatever suited my route or fancy... mostly throughout the day but sometimes also in the dark... not once have I felt like ok this is a spot I would avoid (well, maybe some when there is dark but thats in literally every city), or that I would feel unsafe, looking behind my back and yes, I am aware of the fact that I am a fairly big dude (around 185 cm and 115kg, usually with a face looking as if I was seeking my next victim lol), which of course usually helps to deter most minor threats... so I am aware that if I was a slim-built woman, the experience would most probably be different in some areas but still... if you behave ok/nice and follow common sense, in most cases you should be fine

Living here +30 years and never ran into a dangerous situation. So yes I agree - Safety is almost a given here in Vienna and we take it almost for granted. However I have to say based on the experience I also know which areas to avoid during night time. So it's important to educate every tourist and newcomer to explore informed.

Interesting question. It's been nearly a century since I last spent an early morning at Schwedenplatz after a night out. But I can't recall ever feeling unsafe while standing there, enjoying my after-party Käsekrainer. Best, Puria

We were there for three days, as you said during the day no problems, although I have to admit that we also did not encounter any problems during the late evening hours.... I met more "interesting" characters in the 15th and 13th Districts, in broad daylight

Funnywise yes. In 2015 our hotel was near LAX and first night we went to a Chilies restaurant in Inglewood at 10 pm. Nothing bad happened but I clearly felt that we stepped into a different neighborhood 😅 Puria

Uuuh😍😍Damak is one of the best Turkish Restaurants I've ever been. Their Food is SO Delicious 🤤🤤😍. Such a great place to have Brunch on Sunday for example 🥰

Thanks for the video, we were planning to stay near the train station at a place like Leonardo or Novotel to catch an early morning train but since it’s so close to shady streets, I think we will opt for further away like Holiday Inn Vienna City and take a cab.

The area around the central station is completely newly built and also a lot of corporate offices. The situation there is completely different than Reumannplatz or Keplerplatz. You will feel save close to central station.

Every place has areas that are less salubrious, just look at crime figures and if an area is known for drug dealing it's perfectly valid to tell people about it so don't know why people get so het up about it. But this does bring a big issue as it all depends on your audience. The people living there want all these great things from other cultures as it's what happens when people migrate around over the years but when you are a tourist you will often go to the things that are the local food/drink etc. Why would I travel 1000 miles to have a kebab? As you point out you didn't see many tourists, so it becomes a matter of is the place not so well policed etc BECAUSE of the lack of tourists? And that is something that needs to be addressed as well.

It’s like saying go to parts of London that have xyz when there is already so much that could take you months to cover that you have more of an interest in. pretty easy walking there during the day. good luck on a weekend at night. had to go there for a year at night and i wouldn`t even live in this muslim ghetto for free rent. stay away from this place!

If you follow their videos and paid attention, you will notice that they love Vienna and they stated that that church area is a place they would avoid. Also crime rates have increased in Vienna by 16 %in 2022 and 10% in 2023 . Sooooo numbers are not subjective.

Secure yes, most secure not anymore. Too much multiculture and non european migration in a short time frame. The turkish shop owners won't do you anything, but the aimless migrant teen gangs at night are a different animal. Not saying you will get instantly mugged or assaulted, but it is also not a near 0 chance anymore. Vienna would need a bit of a break to absorb that and keep a healthy back bone of local lead-culture.

I dont think, that daily knife attacks, also during the day, happen in the 19th. Only the strong presence of the police made the situation a little bit better at the moment there.
