Wow, nostalgic. I used to shop in Billa and Julius Meinl for fancy stuff when I lived in Vienna some 30 years ago.

Wow I almost forgot about Julius Meinl! As far as I know majority of them turned into Spar Gourmets.

@@KhyatiPuria we have one Julius meinl in Chicago but it’s not a store, it’s a coffee shop, a fancier Starbucks.

@Tara_Pannonica Ah nice! Yeah their coffee is still successful and I have seen it being sold around the world. I think also the one in Chicago is just using Julius Meinl coffee beans.

@@KhyatiPuria that’s impressive that they managed to stay open for this long. I’ve only been once in that coffee shop in Chicago, i was just curious when it opened. Nothing special really, just some foreign name that attracts Americans.

As people who have moved here 7 months ago from Canada, we love the international/specialty supermarkets. Prossi is amazing. Bedronka is another. We can fill our craving for dill pickles and pierogie.
@KhyatiPuria8 ай бұрын
Yeah those are really unavoidable. Especially when we try to cook our favorite international dishes.

The supermarkets in Vienna is mind blowing. It has a wonderful system compare to other countries. The last part was kind of shocking with lock system just like in bank account locks. 😅😅

On weekends and holidays you still can go shopping at some of the larger gas stations (who also sell food and beverages) or to one of the major railroad stations (like the Westbahnhof). At the lather you will also find a 24/7 supermarkets. The goods are just a bit more expensive.

When I first moved to Wien in '92, shops were closed at 13:00 from Saturday afternoon till Monday morning. It took a while to get used to, but seemed more civilized than in the US. People value their time off. It is said that Americans live to work, whereas Europeans work to live.

Aside of the supermarkets at gas stations and railroad stations I also found out that the Spar at the end of the Mariahilfer Straße, near the museums, is also open on Sundays.

Most important tip for any travels but esp. Vienna: in USA buy 99 cent waterproof bags from home goods / Ross/tj max; pack flat in your suitcase ( I bring 3) We walk with one everywhere we go and then I have a bag for groceries, shopping etc. You must have your own bags everywhere in Europe! And an added bonus: when at airport they say your suitcase over weight by an ounce (heehee ) you pull out a bag put a coat or whatever’s too heavy into it add your purse and walk on to airplane no added costs👍❤️ they’re big and flat perfect for walking with!! The best tip I can give anyone they lay perfectly flat , also good if you go to beach. Also in Vienna best take home gifts in their supermarkets: chocolates, cookies, tiny jars of marmalades and holiday cute gifts. There’s a stationery/ paper store in tiny mall by the Bristol hotel the greatest holiday gifts cheap and bubble wrap for wrapping breakables in suitcase or to buy tubes for artwork to go home with: It’s upstairs by their grocery store in bottom floor , there are fantastic foods there! I’m madly in love with walkable Vienna!👍❤️

Vienna has a LOT of international variety grocery stores :) ... while I personally have yet to enter any of them, I came across these - Bulgarian, Romanian and I believe one was Ethopian... and I am sure that if I made my search more thorough, I would find even more varieties :)

Yeah thankfully to the expat community we’re seeing more unconvential supermarkets. Also the Austrian supermarkets got more diverse in the last years. I remember a time when Tabasco was the only chili sauce in the supermarket.

Though on a smaller scale, the Heinen's Market in the former Cleveland Trust bank building in downtown Cleveland OH is amazing! Plus you get Club Fx and Vault night clubs underneath, with some private party rooms inside some of the many vaults.

not all supermarkets close on Sundays - those at major transportation hubs are open, at least to my experience (e.g. BILLA at Praterstern station is open on Sunday)

Correct! Also some hospitals have an open supermarket. Krankenhaus Nord for example.

Correct on major traffic hubs like the main trainstations, and on airports (some austrian airports have a supermarket, but not all of them) do too. And then there are small ones at some fuel stations. (where the prices are higher of course)
