Exploring Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery

Today's adventure takes us about 25 miles south of Chicago to the town of Matteson, Illinois. This town started in the 1830's by German immigrants. Today, we are going to explore a cemetery where many of these original immigrants are buried. Included in these graves is that of John Rehfeld, who was a German immigrant who ended up hanging himself from a tree in this area. Also, the grave of Sabra McCoy who was the daughter of a Revolutionary War soldier and who, along with her husband, John, were station masters on the underground railroad. So come join me as we explore Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery and Elliott Cemetery.

Very happy you did this one. 3 miles from my home. Been meaning to check it out for years but not done yet. Thanks for doing it yourself. The local Legion post is Reinfelt Meyer Post 474. Maybe John Reinfeldt (WW1) Is a namesake.

Both cemeteries are very nicely kept. Nice to see the histories of such large families that obviously stayed close together and then we're buried together. Thank you for including both cemeteries. 👍

That's a cool old cemetery it's a shame what happened to Lincoln Mall in Mattson what the town was most famous for

That was the place to be as a teenager in the 1980's. We would go meet at the arcade, get some greasy pizza from the food court, and try to pick up girls...which usually failed. Society is much different now.

@@MiddleAgedBaldGuy That quickly changed, a complete transformation with the advent of the internet, I was making a funny but entirely accurate remark, you know, if they were to build a magnificent mall, it would become an immediate blunder, I for sure would not be interested in being there, and yes, I am from the mall era and I do not miss it at all. Today with take it for granted, but the internet said, Bye-bye malls! I will put the world at the fingertips of humans!

​@@giggles8458there's lots of KZbin videos interested in the dying malls. As I studied the 1950s and 60s downtown aspects, I realized it was similar to the mall. And the mall had people from all different towns. But yeah, I get how you feel as well
