Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places

Күн бұрын

More lost footage from 2009! Seven years ago, Paul and I headed out late one night to hike to this large, crumbling abandoned talc mine in the desert to document it and explore it. Deep in the mine, Paul crossed over a near-vertical shaft by walking on a plank that had been precariously placed over the void. We also found some interesting artifacts inside the mine from a bygone era. What impressed us the most were the multiple entrances to this large room-and-pillar talc mine and its wide, roomy tunnels.

+Person. It's 100% illegal to enter the catacombs, I'm not sure where you've gotten this information. It's been illegal since 2nd November 1955 and they have their own police called E.R.I.C who patrol them. You're not going to go to prison or anything if caught but you will receive a fine. On you lawlessness claims all I'm going to say is you're living in a fantasy if you think a country like France has anywhere people can do what they please with no repercussion. Although you are right in the fact you don't have a leg to stand on if you wish to sue For injuries sustained down there when you've accessed them illegally.

I was recently at a Dutch cleanser mine just outside of Mojave that look a lot like talc mines. We went into some portals and stayed out of the one that had a piece of rock come down from the ceiling the size of a small apartment. We could see clear fissures and another slap of stone the size of a school bus ready to go at any point. The ceiling was about 20 feet high at the large mine opening (portal) but it was too risky looking. Great channel by the way.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, Michael! Thanks for your comment! Yes, this mine reminded me somewhat of the Old Dutch Cleanser Mine up there off the 14. Both mines used the same room-and-pillar mining technique, and both had inclined passageways leading up to the entrances on the mountain. I think, though, this mine was much, much smaller than the Old Dutch Cleanser Mine. I have a couple videos of the Old Dutch Cleanser Mine here on my channel. The most recent was from summer 2015. We explored the whole thing, basically. In my older video from a few years ago, I was by myself and basically got "lost" in that mine purposely. There was no way I could've backtracked and found my way back to the portal that I used to enter the mine because I had dropped down to a couple lower areas. I knew, however, that there were multiple inclined passageways leading back up to portals, so it was just a matter of time before I finally came across one. It was fun being deliberately lost in that mine for a half hour or so!

+Cornish Mine Explorer It was dusty! After this exploration, I remember having a slight cough for a day or two. Yes, I did not regularly use dust masks back in the day when this was shot. A one-time exposure like that, though, doesn't worry me. I feel bad for the miners who were exposed to those conditions and particulates day after day for a 12 hour shift or so.

Now that is getting up early to explore a mine. Love the night time shots of the tipple. At 5:20 when you found those nails it has reminded me of finding small rail spikes on a ledge of a header. Most likely a miner set them down decades ago and just forgot about them. Great work as always sir.

That was awesome ending with the shot of Paul venturing forth across the board... The number of dots (indicating the loaded carts that went by) on the wall and timbers was more than I have ever seen in one place inside of a mine before. That was pretty incredible. +upalevel productions Yes, talc comes from underground. There apparently is a wide swath of talc that cuts through an area both inside and outside of Death Valley. It was mined extensively in the late 1800s and into the 1900s. Pretty much all talc mining has stopped, though, as of the 1950s or later.

+Tiago Byegmann Thanks, Tiago! Yes, Paul crossing that plank was pretty exciting. Don't worry, though. He thoroughly examined the plank before stepping onto it. If it appeared to be too risky or too unsafe in any way, Paul would not have crossed it. There really is no difference between exploring an abandoned mine at night or in the day. We probably went at night for this particular hike because it is much cooler in the desert at night than it is during the daytime. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to watch and leave a comment. I appreciate your support very much.

another cool mine! I'd be worried about asbestos in a talc mine, didn't look like you guys stirred up a bunch of dust though.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 7 жыл бұрын
+Will Phoneman Asbestos is a valid concern, and I unfortunately was not into wearing dust masks back when this video was made years ago. However, I think a one-time exposure like we had in this mine is really nothing to be too concerned about. It was the miners who were working in this mine for 12 hour shifts seven days a week month after month who were inadvertently exposed to an inordinate amount of asbestos with its potentially devastating side effects. Thanks for taking the time to watch this video and to comment. Your support and interest is appreciated very much on this end.
@WillPhoneman
@WillPhoneman 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, usually one time exposures are low risk, especially for small amounts, and yes, the miners got the worst of it back in the days before asbestos exposure was understood.

That is a neat set of workings! I wonder if the inclined raises were part of some sort of shrinkage stoping method, with all the ore now trammed out and the chutes removed.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 7 жыл бұрын
On some of those inclined raises, there were grooves worn into the upper part of the arch as if they had a cable hauling carts up and out of the mine. Not sure why the grooves would be on the upper part of the arch unless the ore was suspended in some kind of bucket.

Man y'all have some big kahunas! Exploring dangerous mines? What would you do in the event of a cave in? Do you take along portable collapsing shovels? Hopefully you tell someone where you're going in the event you don't ( God forbid) return. I guess I swore of caves when the National Park at Mammoth Cave informed me. how deep underground I was and it freaked me out. All I wanted to do was get out of there. I have since gone spelunking since , but I still get the creeps in really tight places.Its usually when I'm upside down with only enough space for my body to get through. Be safe.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 7 жыл бұрын
+Mike Lannom Thanks for your comment, Mike! I, too, went to Mammoth Cave when I was a kid. I remember being fascinated with all of that stuff. Regarding cave-ins, those are always a possibility but probably extremely rare. I do need to invest in a collapsible shovel just in case, though. Of course, the risk of a cave-in goes up dramatically when exploring talc mines due to talc being very soft and unstable. Thankfully, nearly all of the mines I explore and document are hard rock mines. Somebody always knows the location of the areas I'll be exploring.

I think for this video, there was about 40 minutes worth of footage. We probably spent about two hours in this mine although it's difficult to remember that far back. Some of the footage that gets cut are retakes of certain scenes, but most of it is footage that just turned out badly for one reason or another. You can rest assured, though, that you are getting the best footage in the final video from all of the footage that was taken.

Thank you, Christopher! Just trying to document and preserve as much old mining history as I can through these videos. Nobody really mines like this anymore. Nobody builds three-story ore bins like you saw at the beginning of this video. Nobody makes wooden ore chutes anymore. Most modern mines are large, open-pit mines. This method of tunneling through hard-rock is really becoming a thing of the past. I'm pleased that you enjoy the videos here. Thanks for your support and interest!

Sorry if this is an ignorant question. Talc mine like baby powder? I enjoy the videos, I lived in Farmington NM back in the late 80s. I would venture into the portholes of some of the old gold mines in Silverton area. Never went more than 100 or so feet.

I suppose, if I had to guess, I would say they built those supports like that because the rock deposits were at an angle. Looking at it though it almost looks like the whole corridor is skewed to the side.

when I was a kid my doctor told me that if I could smell the odor of guano then I could inhale rabies particles and catch the disease. I had been exploring a cave and grabbed a bat off the ceiling and it bit me, so I did get the rabies shots. I don't know about the validity of rabies being airborne though.

+Mutum I've never come across an actual person living inside one of these abandoned mines. However, we have come across the remains of someone's living quarters in these mines. There were things laying around like old sleeping bags, old pots and pans, and other camping gear and stuff like that. I don't know who would want to live so far inside an abandoned mine where there's no sunlight.

@@AbandonedMines11 People have been living in caves (where available of course) for hundreds of thousands of years. They offer great protection against the weather and animals hunting at night. Darkness is just a minor nuisance compared to that, our ancestors (not even Homo Sapiens yet) have found a workaround for it at least 1.7 million years ago. Compared to all of human existence, houses are just a fancy very recent invention, the first primitive huts were probably built only around 10 to 12 thousand years ago or so, with the advent of early farming, and the earliest stone mansions came (probably as some sort of palace) in ancient Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) around 6 to 7 thousand years ago.

hello here in my town ( Kiruna) we have some old mines one of them is ive been into. its allways frozen in there full of ice and running Water but its super unsafe. The Police tryed to seal it off so People cant get into it. its actully inside our towns skiing moutain, and once we were walking to one of The hidden ways into The mine. anyway my friend threw a rock on The ground outside on The side of The mountain where there is a small forrest, and something like 8x8 meter collapsed , it was a mobly wooden platform that grass had grown over. but if he would never threw The rock we would have walked on it and died. we actully found inside The mine about a hour of walking inside where The hole keept going, into a huge void With big ice spikes in The bottom. The mine is cool becus it never fully unfreeze there it becomes huge icespikes on The floor that rise up. much of The stuff like small houses and stuff is still left. we actully been so far inside we found a wooden Door no one Ever touched since the shutdown of the mine. we could not get it open and by The looks we been The only one Ever so far inside The mine, but there was a hole trought The Door and it is The biggest room inside there with loads of "houses" we have also found cloths frozen in these small houses inside Hanging still becus much were just left. but when The water got inside and frozen you almost touch The mine shaft roof, would be cool if you guys had a video about The mine. sorry for my english

A gas mask won't save you from low oxygen, basically. The only two ways to survive low oxygen are either to have a meter with you and turn round when it starts alarming, and to carry and use full breathing apparatus. The meter is much, much the easier of the two.
