Very nice setup. The closed cell insulation was a great idea. One thing I can recommend from years of camping all 4 seasons, is stop at any decent truck stop or Amazon and buy a 12 volt electric blanket. i was so immersed in the awesomeness of it that thought totally never occured. i'm thinking for that a 2'x2' floor section that lifts out and has a pan with a drain or a pet pool with a curtain could be ideal since it'd be impossible for a shower to have its own permanent area.

Cedric, a suggestion to your heating situation. Look up the diesel powered heaters. We use them in our sleeper units for semi trucks with no problems. They use very little fuel, very little power (12 volts), vent exhaust outside and can run for days off a 5 gallon tank. Imagine never waking up cold at night or come back from skiing to a warm trailer. There are many kits for van conversions and rooftop tents on the market. I thoroughly enjoy my -20 degree nights in Montana. Hope this helps.

A tip for you; I run two computer fans wired to 12 volt. One is in a fixed position attached to the ceiling vent drawing air up and out of the trailer. The other has a longer cord and is moveable. The portable one is placed in the shady side window drawing air in and the roof one draws air out keeping a constant air flow. They only draw a 1/2 an amp and make a big difference even in summer

Heating water on the stove and having a head to toe strip wash cleans as well as a shower but uses much less water and doesn't require a fitted shower base. Simply soap oneself from head to toe and rinse off with a cotton flannel. It's how people washed before the ubiquity of baths and showers. Using something like a BranQ Compact Toilet and 22 litre tie handle pedal bin liners for solid human waste collection and disposal is completely hygienic and legal and is done daily by everyone that puts a disposable nappy/diaper into a bin! These portable toilets may also be used to store spare firewood, etc, when not used for its original purpose, so becoming multipurpose. Any container capable of securely holding liquids works for urine collection and disposal. Whilst an installed toilet and shower are nice, they also hugely eat into the very limited floor space in vans and small trailers and may be difficult to use due to freezing pipes and tanks. There may be problems when such sewage holding tanks need emptying as finding a facility may not be convenient when needed.

I live off-grid in Spain, the basic need to avoid cov.19 is staying away from people... that was the first reason for me to go off-grid. Shit happens everywhere, the more people the more problemes, big city's are the first to be hit by all kind of problemes, terror, violent manifestations, revolutions and hit by wars, you name it... and this virus. This thing will be around for a long time, try to stay away from people in city's, imposible. I go for food every three weeks, in the morning when the shop opens. In the region where I live is a 1/1000 risk. I use gloves, and clean every item I buy, in a supermarket with enough space between shelfs . Last time there where four other people in. I push the troley with my arms/elbows. I needed two of them. Fresh vegy's, it's less ofcorse. By the way I have a toilet/shower , 200 L water, grey water to flush the toilet ( no chemicals ) in a 90 L tank, go's in a septic afterwards, and outside 6000 L max clean water in black containers, a tanktruck delivers....500 W solar panels ( can be moved at the sun ) 30 W controler and two 250 Ah batteries, Webasto liquid heater, 1000 W and 6500 W generator.... etc. on a 7 meter semi-trailer... I'm building at the moment a 10 meter wooden with 3 x 2 slide-out . I was'nt born yesterday but in 1949. I was present in history class and as a boy reading " Boys and Science ". I did'nt panic about the climat, not then, not now. Nobody did, plages where panic items . And wars.

I've watched very wealthy people with great jobs experience tragedies that ruined their lives. You must live in some kind of jaded bubble not to be aware of human suffering and it's systemic causes.

Homelessness can happen to most anyone but its possible to insulate yourself from it happening to yourself. You have to be willing to work steady from a young age. At the age of 54 I have never had one single day of being unemployed since I started working at 16. I just retired 😁. I worked full time through college, acquired my career job and bought my house. I paid it off in 15 years. I never have to worry about being homeless as long as I pay my property tax and insurance. I also bought acreage out in the country to build my retirement home. I also saved up a good amount of money and have a good retirement plan from my career. My point is that young people need to take life seriously and instead of not working steady and wanting to be a ski bum or roam around having fun they need to get a degree or job training in something they enjoy and then keep employed steadily long term, talking a few decades. This is how you build wealth and security, it doesn’t come over night. I was able to become financially set through long term work but I also had plenty of vacations and time off to go have fun and enjoy life. I’m afraid many young people today are not taught a good work ethic and will be in trouble later in life from lack of planning and dedication to building up security for themselves.

Check out a Chinese Diesel Heater on Amazon. Better than someone might think. You will stay swarm all night, no fumes and a little diesel goes a very long way. Take care.

I agree on that, warn out parts for a Webasto cost easy 150 - 350 € . I used a second hand hot air blower with a Chinees label this winter as a test. Not even cleaning needed. My Webasto stopt delivering after two ( 2 ) months, Controler/print wasted, cost 350 € when self repaired. I changed the whole thing with pulls givers for security cameras and a timer for hallway lighting. For some 150 . Webasto dealers are forced to sell repair sets for small items that can be replaced with a screw driver and cost some euro's, the set itself 150 and it never can go wrong with the rest in that set. Imagine that one has to buy half a car engine because the spark-plugs have to be replaced.... I know that China has sended other shit this time and qualety and how people are treated over there, but about heaters.... The way the West makes things " not repaireble because repair cost too much..... " This corona crisis will put us back to 1930, in those day's repairing was the norm, I'm ready for it, I never stoped repairing and re-using. Only the smart/handy will survive times to come......

I bought a used 2016 Work n Play trailer. 8 x 18 with shower, fridge, 55 gal fresh water and pump, toilet with holding tanks, full ramp door in the rear, hard rubber flooring, murphy bed in front, awning and a dinette for 16000 dollars US. Doesn't have that really cool wood stove but I still think his trailer is pretty awesome. I don't have the skills or patience to build one.

It's a "stealth mode" camper. It's not invisible, just not notable. And frankly, if the sign says no camping, it gives the jurisdictional authorities room to say "what camper?". Aside from that observation, this is about optimal between an expensive tent and an inexpensive travel trailer. Personalized for just how the owner works. Great template. Me likey.

Very nice job. I would swap out the wood stove for a Nuwaystove vented propane heater. It's just about the same size as your wood stove but with a propane tank that would go all night! It also doesn't give off wood smoke so it keeps your profile stealthy!

Or any avid outdooraman/woman. As a winter hiker, going to the bathroom in the woods is the norm, so a bucket would be a luxury, and since we're often not allowed to sleep at trailheads, which can mean hours long drives super early in the morning, being able to stealth camp is hugely convenient.

This is a SWEET buildout! The cabinet clips are brilliant. As always, though, I gotta wonder why they don’t put in at least an under the bed, rollout portable potty. I could never be captive to outside or public toilets. Funny thing, I actually own the real life version of that vintage trailer pic he has on his wall, even the same colors. I could totally live in it and have for up to 3 weeks at a time, though it came standard (in 1957) with a kickass propane wall heater AND a toilet and shower. A very efficient layout gave me a full kitchen, dinette, tons of storage and it can sleep 4-5 comfortably.

I saw a similar video where the owner put in a raised floor. This helped with the 'cold floor' issue putting some space between it and the bottom of the camper (& some insulation) but also served as extra storage.

YOU CAN MAKE ONE FROM A FIFTEEN GALLON BARREL THAT WILL WORK FAR BETTER THAN THAT TINY THING YOU HAVE. IF YOU SLEEP WITH ONLY ONE LITE BLANKET YOU WILL WAKE UP FROM THE COLD WHILE YOU STILL HAVE PLENTY OF COALS FOR AN EASY RESTART. THE PROPANE HEATER SHOULD HAVE A STOVE PIPE AND OPERATES WITHOUT ELECTRIC. YOU ARE ABSOLUTLY RIGHT ABOUT THE PLUMBING. KEEP AT IT YOU ARE DOING GOOD. Really like this set up! A suggestion for your morning heat: Try using an Olympian Wave LP heater (Wave 3 or higher). It’s a catalytic heater. It's much smaller and extremely efficient. A 1 gallon propane tank would last you a week in that small space. It’s also safer and quiet! I use a Wave 2 in my ford econline cargo van. You run a legnth of gas and keep a small or large bottle outside. Of course, you may want to keep your wood stove for day use or charm, or just keep a 5 gallon propane bottle outside for long stays. One 5 gallon bottle will last me over 3 weeks on low, and half that on high setting when temps are in the 40’s outside. But I have NO insulation in my van. The only things I don’t like about the Wave is not being able to more easily tune the heat lower in the warming seasons. It can be achieved, but it’s fickle.

Nice project with your father! Well done! But why not just buy a camper? save money and time, used Campers are inexpensive and ready to go with heat, AC comfort etc. If you want your camper stealthy- change the exterior siding, customize it .

@@corinnelsmith For one, to each their own. In my first campervan. I had a minivan. I did have a shower and a toilet. I agree with you. But this is not about me. This is about him. Two, I've been snow skiing in Southern California. There's places to take care of everything else. I'm not sure if he is skiing off sight or going to a skiing area where you have to pay to ski. That would change everything. Part of my life I grew up on farms and ranches. Sometimes you have to do your business outside. It is what it is.

I imagine you could use an old cellphone and build it into the walls with a fulltime charge cord... I don't think the find my phone app works without data.

Another Somebody Just in the KZbin van folks I watch three vans were broken into and all the camera equipment and other valuables stolen. One had a locked bike stolen off the back while they slept. Some people are very creative with security.

Cédric S. Take off factory plywood. Use 1” board foam insulation between metal wall frames. Then another 1” foam board over that. Run electrical and re-install plywood. Must buy longer self taping screws and existing holes so line everything back up. It is important with this installation that you keep you trailer in milder temperatures as it is the extreme difference in temperatures in close proximity that creates possible moisture or mold issues. So I try to park and sleep in climates that have little humidity and don’t drop below 50F. So far in 4 years I have had no issues. If issues arise it is very easy to disassemble and clean up mold and then put it back. It’s fairly cheap and a little Honda 2200i with a 1500w heater runs about 61/2 hours. The solar drains a battery pretty fast using that so if you have a bunch of batteries you could use battery power. I save my solar batteries for light and refrigerator. Use the generator for microwave, hot plate, and anything with high wattage. I can run AC on solar as long as there is sufficient sunlight. But my interior is not as nice as this video. I covered my walls with carpeting 9x6 put in tongue and grove floors. No plumbing. But it is livable if you use Gym memberships for showers and truck stops for dishes.

My little inverter generator just died. my heater I was running at first and then I went to just an electric blanket which was a lot less amps and alot warmer. I'm off grid so I'm using it each night. My new inverter generator didn't last but about four months using it every night. Now I wish I wouldn't have sold my 1995 model 1850 Watt Coleman non inverter old school generator. That thing ran since 1995 but I've only been off grid for about five months. The old Coleman 1850 generator would rattle the engine valves and still keep running.

Jon Smith I also use electric blanket for cooler nights as well. I only use Honda for cooking mainly. Changing my elevation and my latitude through the year, controls my heating and cooling. The Honda is the quietest but it is still not very stealth. I can tolerate 40-50 weather at night so I try to plan my nights to be in the right area so I do not use my generator at night. I have no other options. I became permanently disabled (legs) so I have disability only. That is not enough to live conventionally. Pre planning sun, rain and temperatures seem to be the cog that drives my days. The Kodiak second gen works great and easy to charge if you are looking for a hassle free system. It is plug and play. Honda starts 1st pull. I use no propane. Water is a gravity feed and I only wash dishes when I can’t find a public sink. It’s not the ritz but there is freedom. The trick is you convert from homeless to nomad. It is a slight distinction but a totally different attitude from others as well as yourself. Living conventionally for me was not financially possible and the burdens of maintaining a house with my legs was too great. Besides, my only other option is at a shelter full of crazies, ex-druggies, and alcoholics. Going on 5 years this summer.

Cedric, a suggestion to your heating situation. Look up the diesel powered heaters. We use them in our sleeper units for semi trucks with no problems. They use very little fuel, very little power (12 volts), vent exhaust outside and can run for days off a 5 gallon tank. Imagine never waking up cold at night or come back from skiing to a warm trailer. There are many kits for van conversions and rooftop tents on the market. I thoroughly enjoy my -20 degree nights in Montana. Hope this helps.

So awesome that your dad was so supportive. I like how you solved several issues like the jack-stands in windy conditions and the holders across the cabinet door knobs. Your desk solution is very simple and yet very effective. I guess the only missing parts are a shower/toilet but I guess you can use facilities elsewhere? Overall you have done a lot with a small space. My wife is not hip on the idea of a van conversion but maybe a trailer would be ideal in terms of a solution for long term trips.

Prison is only prison if you're forced to be there. He has more freedom that you can imagine. To think that only people who live in brick and mortar can have 1000 thread Egyptian cotton sheets - that is mental prison. How do you know he doesn't? What happens when the day comes when arthritis means you can't easily go up and down your stairs? When your body no longer does what you want it to? Prison comes in many forms. I think it's great that he is able to max out his freedom, traveling to places you can't begin to imagine apparently - while he's young and able-bodied. I got one opportunity to see mountains when I was in my twenties and swore I'd find a way to go back, and to travel and see all the wonderful things there are to see. Now I'm wondering if it will be possible - if I can physically handle it even after I figure out how to afford it. He will never regret that he didn't go for his dream. That's freedom.
