Exploring Alternatives

Күн бұрын

In this video we meet Mailyne, a single mom who has adopted a zero waste lifestyle for almost 1 year to reduce the amount of garbage she sends to landfills and to be part of a sustainable future.
At the grocery store, she uses cloth bags, mason jars, and pillow cases to buy bulk food, produce and bread. She makes all of her personal care products, including toothpaste, deodorant and mouthwash, with the help of a friend. She also uses a safety razor and menstrual cup to avoid buying disposables.
Buying used clothing and toys is her first choice and if she does have to purchase something new, she tries to source items that are sold or shipped without non-recyclable packaging.
Her apartment building does not currently have a compost collection service but she doesn't let that stop her. She brings her bucket to friends places or to her parents house while she waits for a more convenient solution to become available.
Mailyne introduced us to a few innovative zero waste solutions including a binchotan charcoal water filter (it's like a Brita filter without the plastic), compostable bamboo toothbrushes, and reusable beeswax wrap as a replacement for plastic cling wrap (maybe there's a vegan alternative to this?!).
You can follow her zero waste adventures on her blog here:

Transforming "waste" into art. It seems to me that this is in some way an analogy for her whole project. There exists this very serious issue of wastefulness in our society. And she manages not only to show that this problem can be solved by her own example but also that something more beautiful can emerge out of it: a more meaningful life. That's art. :)

It's a shame how disposable our world is and how much packaging everyday items come wrapped in. Here in China it's really bad, just as an example they wrap apples individually in foam then plastic and then when you buy them they usually use 2 plastic bags to hold the apples because one might break. No one thinks about it.
@summydots
@summydots 6 жыл бұрын
Atleast the final two bags is in your hands to avoid. Actually you can ditch it whole by buying at the local market. I understand your concern is plastic production & packaging in general, but we can only start with ourselves

Very inspiring. I attempted to go 100% zero waste last year for my New Year's resolution. Have to say it is really quite difficult to go 100%, particularly for where I live, in the UK. Firstly there are no bulk stores near me (or very few in the UK from what I've found) so everything comes wrapped in something. So I tried to go for wrappings that were recyclable or biodegradable. Some habits were very hard for me to quit - like buying chocolate and occasional crisps which only comes in disposable wrapping, however I did make a lot of big changes. 1. Using only reusable shopping bags and refusing plastic bags in shops 2. Buying loose fruit and veg from the market (not wrapped in plastic from supermarkets) and also investing in a shopping bag with wheel so that I could make the long walk home from the market with heavy fruit and veg 3. Buying a Mooncup and using reusable sanitary products. 4. Using a reusable water bottle 5. Using washable food containers instead of cling film/plastic food bags (still need to do this more than I do) 6. Buying beauty products from LUSH, who use biodegradable wrapping for toothpaste, and a lot of products with either no packaging (shampoo/conditioner bars) or containers that you take back and they recycle for you (free face mask if you do that!) 7. Composting all my organic waste (in a pit I dug out the back of my house) 8. Collecting random items for my 'art box' full of stuff to be creative with for costumes and decorations Still on the list is to make my own toothpaste, ditch unneccessary products that I cant get in recyclable wrapping, invest in reusable wrapping paper for next Christmas/birthdays!

+Caro Jeffo thanks for watching! It sounds like you've really given zero waste a lot of thought and effort and I'm impressed with all of the changes you've made in your life. I think any waste you divert/avoid sending to the landfill is impressive, even if 100% success is not possible. I know we won't be able to go 100% zero waste because we're always on the road and don't know of all the best places to find bulk food, etc. but I still want to do the best we can. If you're looking for a replacement for plastic cling wrap, you might be interested in this product Mailyne posted about recently. It's reusable beeswax wrap. You can check it out here: adreamlivedgreener.wordpress.com/2015/12/17/going-on-11-months-whats-new/ Happy exploring!

Fantastic video. I always find it interesting to see the different aspects of life people choose to concern themselves with tightening up on - some are minimalists, some are zero waste, some are holistic, some are fresh/homemade (toiletries, food, etc) some are completely raw, some are completely off the grid, etc. I'm not sure I could (or want to) go as far as Mailyne does, but her story and this video definitely inspires me to do better when it comes to waste, in addition to adopting the life changes I feel spiritually led to (many of which I listed above). Thank you so much for sharing this! Such a great video. :)

also go vegan. uh bc it's literally the number one ecological thing you can do. the animal agriculture industry is SOOOOO wasteful! it also is killing our planet and ourselves! look up nutritionfacts.org and do some research. it's so easy going vegan too.

very impressive. I'll work on this lifestyle and reduce waste. I have a weird feeling when I see litter on the floor, or near the sea, I always have to pick t up. I will now recede a lot of my plastic and waste produce. thanks for the amazing and inspiring video.

stickers from fruits and veggies make neat art. i put them on a cardstock board or even just good paper....colleting them through out the year and then I frame the art! the stickers are unique and have good design! ~ they look great in a kitchen or pantry.

Yes. It's very good to know that there's a lot of people trying to do ZERO waste life. As my aunt says, it's not that hard to live life without those unnecessary WANTS. All you have to do is be creative and live life with contentment.

Such an inspiration!! I've been wanting to move toward a zero-waste lifestyle and have been making my own deodorant for years. At last year's VegFest, I got 3 reusable cloth bags to use for sandwiches or snacks. Definitely trying to get completely away from plastic.
