They don't patrol often. They weren't patrolling at all. They were looking for you. Because you tripped motion sensors on your run to the building. That's why they're patrolling. Because they *know* someone's there. But it's too big to go door to door so they're hoping to catch you 'on-the-move'. They know you haven't left her because you haven't tripped their sensors on the way out. So they know you have to be somewhere there... And as long as you stay indoors you're safe until they get more personnel then do a security sweep. They're running a minimum 'perimeter' sweep until they have a higher personnel count. Eventually they would sweep the buildings on foot. That's why the vehicles were scanning the area you ran through. Because it'd be your way out. They were keeping you from leaving. They weren't looking through your phone guys. Every airfield has motion sensors, especially UN protected war bufferzones. You definitely lit them all up on the way out.

I was in the RAF based at Akrotiri in 1974 when the Turks invaded. Such a shame what has happened to this airport since then. The wrecked aircraft that you went into was a RAF Avro Shackleton used for maritime patrol work. I lived in Cyprus for three years in Limassol while in the RAF and my daughter was born at the RAF Hospital at Akrotiri in January 1974 but had to be evacuated from Cyprus with my wife and many others. Thanks for uploading this video.

Great video. I am a Greek Cypriot refugee and I often cycle past the abandoned airplane you featured towards the end of your video but, unlike you, never ventured past the barbed wire, yet I frequently get stopped by the UN asking me of my intentions! As someone else had suggested here, why don't you venture inside my home town of Famagusta/Varosha that we (the Greek Cypriot population) had to abandon on 14/8/1974 and have not been allowed back to our homes ever since. I guarantee that you will capture great footage inside the "Ghost Town" seeing all our abandoned homes, hotels, businesses, churches, schools. Some parts have been renovated for the Turkish military and their families to enjoy (on the sea-front) but most of the new city of Varosha lies untouched for 43 years, 7 months and 12 days! I am available if you need some pointers on locations, possible access points etc - I know the city like the back of my hand!

You can not get anything by writing these things in here. There were so many negotiations for peace between both sides my friend. And none of them agreed by Cypriot Greeks.Agree one of them and then move to Northern Side or stay and live in Southern side.Your choice, both parts country. And so interestingly ; Cypriot Greeks are killing Cypriot Turks because of a dream to be a part of Greece and then ; when Turkish army comes to Cyprus to save Turkish people there, you call it "invasion". What Turkey has to do? watch tilll Cypriot Greeks to kill till the last Cypriot Turk? Peace my friend,It is the most valuable thing in the world..Not a single of a cent could buy the peace.Or gold.. and when you ask for fight,It's soooo easy to get it. Be nice, nice will come to you :) take care.

@@miralemnyz5994 yes "peace is the most most valuable thing in the world" that's why the Turks invaded and started a war in Cyprus? So please think harder before you write something! The relationship between the Turk- and Greek- Cypriots use to be very good before the invasion!! Off course there was some smaller problems. But that was all! If you like it or not, no country in the World recognize the Turkish part as independent

@@a.d.7042 are you joking with me? Smaller problems? It has been accepted from Greek and Greek Cypriot government that Greek gerillas has been sent to Cyprus to kill Turkish Cypriots and they did that. Hey, guys, nice one. I live a couple of kilometres from the airport. I got the chance to go inside- following permission, special passes from the UN- when my brother was directing a short drama film back in 2006. Being a local, and 4.5 years old when the invasion took place, I tell you, I was overflooded with unfathomable emotions when I went in. It's eerie. It's emotional. It's frustrating. It's sad. Believe me, your mind can make you hear the noise of a buzzing airport, passengers and planes and announcements and all. It's insane. This is a time-freeze that should never have occured...

Imagine you are a 10 year old German boy and you are on vacation in Cyprus with your parents, it was not very expensive because cheap tourism had just started at that time, but you still liked it very much. On the day of your departure, a typical travel bus from the late 1970s drives you from your newly built giant hotel to the airport in nikosia, it stops on the concrete slab "street" in front of the airport building. You and your family get out and the bus driver hands you your luggage. You go into the airport building and your parents take care of the flight tickets and travel passes while you and your 4 year old sister stand behind them at the terminal, you go into the waiting hall, you see a nice, colorful advertising poster that says "Coca Cola" Hanging on the wall and asking your father, who is sitting on one of the many modern-looking fabric seats right next to you, to buy you a cola, after asking several times he'll buy you one as an "exception" although he thinks you're actually too young for that. "Don't tell your mother about it," he whispers to you. A few minutes later your flight will be called and you go through the large double glass doors of the ground floor waiting hall out onto the tarmac. You get into the Hawker-siddeley trident from cyprus airlines and look for your seats. You are sitting at the window and your mother is putting your hand luggage in the overhead locker. A few hours later you are back at the airport in Stuttgart and you think back to that wonderful vacation ... .: personally, something like that never happened to me and everything is fictitious but it's kind of a strange feeling to think about it, I have real images in my head. Sorry but I had to write this story in the comments, great video keep it up :.

The last group to leave this airport were the Greek special forces (Α COMMANDO BATTALION - HEADQUARTERED IN CHANIA, CRETE), who repelled a Turkish attack. They were later forced to surrender the airport to the UN. During the battle, the soldiers were deployed on the roof of the terminal, where you were. The aircraft on 25:20 is one of the 13 Noratlas ( 354th Sqdn. "Pegasus") that was secretely used in OPERATION NIKI to transport A COMMANDO from Crete to Nicosia airport. To avoid detection, they flew close to the sea. The bullets were fired from Greek Cypriot forces, who were not notified about the coming of the Greek forces. The mission is considered a success as they blocked the Turkish forces from controlling the island's only international airport at the time. Later during the war, A COMMANDO stopped a full Turkish advance towards the centre of Nicosia. This is the only case, that I know, that two NATO forces fought each other, ever.

I worked in the UNPA for 12 Months (2x UN Tours) as a UN Peacekeeper. Nicosia Airport was a great place to skive and on the weekends, the Royal Engineers would turn the Pan outside the terminal into a go kart track. Good times. Also lived in Ledra Palace for 4 months, that place is a death trap! You are also quite lucky, it appears the Royal Engineers finally cleared those Minefields and the booby traps from the Terminal! I kid you not! Also, it was a Civilian Airport, not Military, it was the major civilian international airport for Cyprus before the invasion/Conflict/Spat. And the Shackleton, my first day in Cyprus was spent sat on the wing drinking little glass bottles of Coke a Cola and Fanta. Ahh good times. The Shackleton looks like it has acquired more damage since I saw it last in 97.

An absolutely awesome video guys, and for the me the best even amongst all your other also awesome videos! We've visited Cyprus many times on family holidays, and as an explorer I've always been fascinated by the green line and buffer zone. Over the years I've dragged my family around most of the larger abandoned villages I've been able to find, and a few other bits and pieces. Also, have crossed the zone in Nicosia to visit the north fleetingly. However, Nicosia airport has always been a place of legend, with few photos other than the occasional by permission visit. Your video shows so much more and almost feel like I was there! Also the nerves felt so real to me, since I've definitely been in those sorts of situations, albeit not with UN peacekeepers in an international buffer zone! Best explorers on KZbin without a doubt!

Nice one boys. Great music and scenes at the end as well. If the UN had spent 25% of the money it cost to maintain patrolling this abandoned turd pile for 40+ years, they could have had it torn down. Even if they left the debris pile, it would have negated the need for patrolling that dump. I'm sure the manpower could have been used elsewhere. Thanks

I was serving there in 1980 on the UN. The Greeks sowed mines as they retreated from the invading Turks, presumably to slow them down or stop them. I often had duties to help put wire and signs on areas to keep civilians safe, as the mines weren't property mapped. So keep safe guys as many areas were unknown in the buffer zone.
