The church surrounded by fir trees, from about 26:00 min. mark: what he reads in romanian it's not (so) old romanian, it's the words we have today, only a few letters different here and there. The translation you asked for: "This cross is for the servant of God Draia Ioan, died at 37 years old, at 3 nov 1959" (just the regular things you write on somebody's cross or funeral stone). About the old books you found at 32:00: it's not a different language, it's still romanian, only the writing system it's different - the cyrillic. I am just a little bit familiar with the cyrillic and with the church service and I was still able to recognise a few words and phrases. The book it's a sort of a guide for the priest during the service: - "si acum Tatal Nostru"--> "and now Heavenly Father (the Lord's prayer)", - "rascumparatu-ne-ai pre noi" --> (praying to Jesus) "... you redeemed us" - "ectenia: Miluieste-ne pre noi, Dumnezeule" --> "the litany: "God, have mercy on us" These are the exact words in romanian, the only difference being the letters are cyrillic. 33:00 upstairs there, usually it's where the choir goes. Really interesting, finding new stuff about my own country through your video. Really good stuff. Thank you for that.

Awesome video, I've never been to Romania but my grandmother traveled there extensively and has a large group of friends, they have traveled to visit us in Canada and are lovely warm and friendly people. As a somewhat religious man I do thank you for respecting the churches and just showing what is there as well as respecting the graves. It is a sad thought that many of those graves may not have been visited in decades and the memories of the deceased may have been long forgotten. May they all rest peacefully with God

Romania's landscape reminds me of where I grew up, a few Kilometres East of Seattle, Washington, in America. The flooding and fog was never that bad, even in Autumn, but it really hit the same noted of "Trees, dirt, rain, and sometimes mountains." Greetings! My name is Dragos and I am writing to you from Romania. I saw your video, I liked it and thank you for what you do. However, I have only one mention that I would like you to keep in mind at least in the future. Agreeing with Santos (user) When making a film or documentary about religion or holy places and churches (regardless of religion), it would be good and nice to consult with the priest of that religion or a person who knows about these things. or take a local connoisseur with you. I do not say it with malice, but because it is clear to me that you do not understand the concept of the holy place and its implications. Without wanting to (obviously) you can desecrate the place or bring offense to Christians or worship. Keep up the good work! God bless you!

What an adventure through beautiful and wild Romania! I would love to know more about the background of the second church - why was it built in the middle of nowhere? Was there a settlement nearby at one point or did the people always have to hike all the way out there? When was it last used? The aerial shots also revealed that it is perfectly encircled by these huge trees - by purpose or chance of nature? Fascinating! And last but not least, that family and their hospitality was remarkable! A bunch of strangers walk up to their house at night and they offer you to stay - thats beautiful people! Just like the country. ❤️

By the looks of the trees, being that close to eachother and surrounding the church like that in a circle, I think they were planted that way. In the communism era of Romania, churches were some times demolished, or in the cities, dug up, and moved away from the streets, to not be that easely seen ( I think they were moved by some kind of a structure with wheels, like we see nowadays) and thats because the countrys leader, didnt like people to have a religion, and wanted to only praise him, so I think thats why the trees were planted around the church, im not sure, its just a speculation

@@WitchDocWittfeld these are orthodox churches - the bible was written in Romanian, and there are Romanian names on the gravestones. The Germans lived in other parts, I've explored a lot of it, and there are still many of them left - not nearly as many as there used to be of course, but their churches are largely well-preserved.
@paulfisher3322
@paulfisher3322 2 жыл бұрын
@@WitchDocWittfeld That was not a German church, it was a Romanian church built and painted by Romanian Orthodox Christians. How do I know this? Because it is an Orthodox church and the paintings are all Orthodox icons, and Romanians are the only Orthodox people to have ever lived in that area. Germans are Protestants and Hungarians are Catholic. Neither of them use that kind of iconography in their churches. Also the Bible is in Romanian. Both Churches in this video are Romanian.
@eedragonr6293

@@paulfisher3322 wrong. Starting with the Western Catholic attack on the Byzantine Empire one may find and see Orthodox icons in the Catholic and Protestant Churches. The Catholic churches were also initially painted but they lost it in time.

One church was in use. NO, they do not close doors. First, Nobody will dare to touch things in a church, or steal. Second: IN villages you put a stick in the door to signal you are not at home so people will not enter (no need for key). In cities, there are many that came in Romania ages ago and have different customs, but in the mountains where Romanians live, there is so.

The second church certainly did not look abandoned, maybe not used too often, but it did not look abandoned. The last had the perfect mix of intactness and shabbiness. And the landscape itself has a perfect wildness to it. Thanks.

It could be recently abandoned too. There's nobody living near that church to take care of it either, the few houses around it were abandoned. (You never know it before you go there and check it out) But the last church was incredible indeed.

Abandoned villages are a common place all over Europe. It is very difficult to live up in the mountains, you have to carry a lot of food from the plains. For elderly people to live there alone without help it's nearly impossible. Young people are going to study and find a better life.

BTW there are Europeans who transformed the abandoned churches in houses and are living inside.

The holy Church at 20:00 is still in use,. As long as there are rural farmers and workers who can make the walk, it is going to remain probably as a mission with biweekly or monthly services and as long as there are strong people to keep it up it will not fall apart. We are talking a Church that survived Communism and atheism so I am not worried about decline to secularism here. Should the youth in the area move on they will save the icons, elements, relics and may desanctify. You did not know, but perhaps contact the local Bishop and he may have someone show you around - a grumpy Monk or Priest perhaps from a town a ways away, or a local Cantor who may have had the keys to those locked doors. I hope you're blessed visiting these places. Their walls are soaked with lifetimes of prayer from Christians long gone, who got baptized, Crismated, married, Confessed, Communed, given Unction in times of illness, in some cases even received Orders, saw the same for kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, had stories to tell long forgotten except by the Saints in the walls and the Lord in the Heavenly apse, who helped possibly build or rebuild, who came in times of joy, times of worry and trouble, times of mourning, before dying and going to the eternal memory of God - maybe even who faced persecution there. Perhaps even legendary people and Saints passed there, perhaps who have relics there (I cannot recall if Missions do or not). Probably many of those icons with holders for candles belonged to people who used them during prayer for a lifetime, before they reposed and left them to the Church in hopes someone else would take them - maybe next time one can find its way into your hands if someone who keeps the place can be able to show you around!
