When you're from France, outside of Paris and Marseille fans, le classique si a bit of something weird. I always didn't care about this match. But this year, I was watching UCL Olympique de Marseille-Tottenham, and when Mbebmba scored, I heard from my desk the stadium raging. There was fear in french players playing for Tottenham because they knew what was aiming for them. This gave my heart to Marseille. Such an amawing club with amazing supporters.

When the Velodrome volcano awakens, the opponent absolutely cannot win. It wasn't even the hottest atmosphere the Stade Velodrome has ever seen. OM-Newcastle in the 2004 UEFA semi-final second leg, OM-Lyon in 2015 or OM-Rennes in 2010 for the French league title or more recently OM-Leipzig in the 2018 Europa League quarter-final second leg were even crazier. For this last match, the atmosphere in the stadium was so terrifying that Timo Werner literally shat himself before the match and had to withdraw. He was afraid of the stadium. OM won 5-2 that night, with extremely unfavourable refereeing but with Payet in his Ballon d'Or mode. Marseille lost in the final to Atletico Madrid and a masterful performance by Antoine Griezmann but that game is still remembered. The reaction of the Leipzig players was captured that evening during the warm-up. Great video ! Marseille is indeed the greatest club in France ! A few precisions : the rivalry is not much only about North vs South, but mostly different vision of football (big money in Paris vs more tradition and popular support in Marseille) and can be roundly dated since the 1980's. Also, watch out for the map you used at the beginning, it shows the "demarcation line" between Occupied France (Germany) and Free France (Collaborating Government of Vichy) during WW2 (which is not the way we French people see France now of course). A few more precisions on the rivalry between those clubs : Marseille as a club is just as the city : very corrupted, always cheating on laws, very criminal, and has been banned from both Ligue 1 and UCL because of corruption and cheating. Paris SG is more representative of the traditional and popular football, that we, as supporters, love. That's why Marseille is also hated by the rest of France.
