I was given anesthesia, but was awake. Worst experience my mind/body has ever had. I wanted to scream, run, fight back, but I couldn't move. I've seen numerous stories about this and understand the high suicide rate because of it. Not only that, but the quack did the wrong surgery. I tried to find an attorney but the surgeon is world renowned and no one would take the case. The insurance co said I should be "thankful". He didn't get the cancer. Our medical system is one scam after another.

I too was given general anesthesia but was awake during my C-section. I felt them slice my stomach open the worst pain ever. I also felt hands pulling my baby out.I too was trying desperately to move but of course you can’t because they paralyze you!! I kept thinking how could you be in this much pain without your heart rate or blood pressure going through the roof. Thank God my mom was with me & saw my eyes flickering rapidly. She told the anesthesiologist I think she’s waking up. They gave me more medicine & the pain stopped but in my mind it was just blackness & I was still thinking “awake”! I was even more terrified then because I thought I had died & would be stuck in this eternal darkness while my mind continued think for eternity!! Then when you tell them they just blow you off & say “yes that happens sometimes it’s called awareness”!!! No it’s called living hell & yes it gives you PTSD!

@@melanieford2511 We aren't alone. Too bad these people are protected while we are blown off. Horrific nightmares and PTSD. It's been 4 years and my anxiety attacks are getting worse. There used to be Support Groups for Victims of Medical Malpractice but it seems they have been censored and forced to cease helping people to get help. The insurance companies and hospitals have all the money to do this.

30 years ago I got a severe migraine the night before a hysterectomy because I was so fearful of awareness during surgery. The anesthesiologist tried to reassure me that that would not happen as they were taking me to surgery and said he would get rid of my severe head pain. He called me a few days after I'd gone home to ask if I had experienced awareness because he said I spoke to him about a premonition of that, as he was putting me under anesthesia. I told him I DID recall feeling the cutting inside my body but couldn't move or speak to tell them! I could only moan slightly and I recalled conversation about what to give me. I had to have two surgeries for breast cancer one year ago and I was TERRIFIED because of my experience during hysterectomy surgery. I was actually having a panic attack waiting for them to come get me to do the surgery in pre op. Thank God, I had no awareness in those more recent surgeries but the antiseptic/betadine type solution that was painted all over my chest for the surgery was left on after and unbeknownst to anyone I'm highly allergic and it burned my skin leaving huge blisters and raw areas. I HATE the thought of any future surgery.

I woke up. The nurse anesthetist let an EMT trainee try to insert the tube. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move or talk. She said....I better do that...she's having trouble breathing. I knew I was dying. I woke up gasping for breath in recovery. I still can't talk about it without crying. That was 35 years ago.

I was only under anesthesia once. I had a complete quadriceps rupture and it was for that repair. The anesthesia portion of the operation was the most surprising for me. I remember starting to count backward from 100 and I can't even remember what number I got to. In what I perceived to be about one second someone was talking to me trying to wake me up. I was in a different room and looking at the clock it was about 4 hours later. It was like my entire being was just shut off for that entire time. Since I had never been under anesthesia before I thought it would be like going to sleep but it was nothing like that. It was like that time didn't exist at all. I didn't have any negative feelings it was just profound. They gave me a nerve block so I was in no pain when I woke up so that was a nice surprise as well. Unfortunately that only lasted for about 48 hours.

I understand now. I did not know how I could have had a conversation with a doctor and not remember a thing, after I supposedly had woke up from the surgery and was talking to her. I quietly freaked out and I was uncomfortable with the lack of control on my part. The bad part about this is I had no memory of her giving me results of the surgery. It was a lesson for me. If ever I am in the same situation, request a written copy of the results and have a trusted family member in there after the surgery so they can tell me what the results are. You have educated me, I don't feel so stressed about it now that I understand. Thank you! 😊

I was in a medically induced coma for 3 weeks after emergency surgery in 2021, during which I almost died. I was 31, I’m now 34. I learned THE HARD WAY that you can dream in a coma. I had nightmares the whole time and I STILL REMEMBER THEM VIVIDLY. But I don’t remember most of the first two weeks after I woke up. I am still extremely severely traumatized…. And I have to have more surgery. I am so terrified. My trauma is telling me that I’m going to die. I’m not afraid of where I’m going after I die - I’m a very devout Christian. But I DO NOT WANT TO DIE. Do you have any idea why I still remember the coma??? If any of my brothers or sisters in Christ see this, please pray for me.

When you have those dreams, just call out to Jesus & focus on him. I have regular nightmares (unrelated to anaesthesia) & that helps immediately. My dad saw bad things & had bad dreams when he was in hospice & as he was in the middle of his "visioning", obviously scared, I told him that if he saw anything upsetting to just call out for Jesus. Just as I said Jesus, it immediately stopped & he slipped into a normal sleep pattern.

Just to clarify- there is a difference between general anesthesia that you received for surgery- where a nurse anesthetist stays with you the entire time you're under anesthesia, watching your vitals & controlling all the drugs you receive. So that's from the moment you go to sleep, to the moment you wake up & go to recovery. Under general anesthesia you received a combination of IV drugs & gases to breathe in that keep you asleep. As opposed to when you're in a medically induced coma, there is no general anesthesia or nurse anesthetist. Typically, the patient is on a ventilator, & the ICU nurses & doctors keep the patient sedated with certain IV drugs. Without getting too technical... they hook the patient up to an EEG & take a drug & continue giving it until the patient's brain waves are where the doctor wants. That's a semi-simplified answer from a former scrub nurse. Oh, as to you having nightmares during/from your medical coma- I can tell you what I was taught before starting to work with patients in the operating room. However, everyone can relate. Think about as you fall asleep & or wake up if a conversation has been going on around you or you had the TV or radio on. As a patient or anyone falls asleep or is sedated, etc.- the last thing to go is the hearing, & the 1st thing to return is the hearing. So sometimes you sleep with the TV on & in your sleep say you dreamed some big famous person died, or something. You wake up thinking, "Why'd I dream that?" Then later learn it actually happened. You dreamed it because you actually heard it in your sleep. Same way coma patients hear & remember things from during their coma. Plus drs, nurses, & maybe even family might have said things in your presence that were very negative or acted like things were bleak. Things like this shouldn't be spoken in earshot of an unconscious or comatose patient either. I know that's a really long-winded answer. Sorry about that, but I hope it helps some. And you are most definitely in my prayers.

I had surgery as a child. I was given to staff-no parents allowed. I was terrified, in a large open ward with other children screaming and crying. There were nuns who were caretakers. Strict, no compassion. I got out of bed to soothe the baby next to me, who was crying. I got in trouble for that. I remember the surgery, and being awake and scared. I don't remember pain. The doctor looked at me, asked me questions, but I couldn't speak. Then he said she is awake to someone behind me. I am grateful I haven't needed more surgery, but I think I would turn it down based on this experience. It really is PTSD.

They gave me Ketamime once for surgery. It was a 3 day experience of nightmarish hallucinations. Like being trapped with the Adam's family. Last time I had a toe bone removed I used nothing because I have neuropathy so I just watched. But they messed up and insisted I go under. I woke up in a Zen like state. Not high. Just content with no anxiety, thinking if this could last forever it must be like what heaven is like. I tried as long as possible not to let on I was awake. It wasn't Propofol. @@MedicalSecrets - actually it got reinfected 4 times requiring 3 further operations. The insurance co. Oscar, founded by Trump's son in law, wouldn't approve even the most obvious of tests. The infectious disease doctor told me he wouldn't give me a Probiotic "because "it would interfere with the antibiotic". Knowing this was false since I was a child and knowing my stomach could not take 3 months of IV Yankomycin I asked him if he was a real doctor. So he then looked it up & gave it to me. Two more bad infections later I told my primary not to mention the word hospital, give me Doxy 500 bid & Id do the would care and cut the thing out myself So I was greenlit and had to do it myself. I have had 30 day survival training in the Everglades & was a First Aid Instructor for years. It is almost healed 2 years later It bleeds occasionally because the shoes are too big.

I just had back surgery 2 weeks ago. I watch all your videos and learned from you, that if I mention waking angry from anesthesia, I could tell my anesthesiologist and they could alter the meds they give me so I don’t wake up cursing everyone. Well, surgery day came (L1-L3 fusion and revision of L3-S1). Biggest back surgery I’ve had to date. The anesthesiologist came in my pre-op room and I told her (first female anesthesiologist I’ve ever had) and told her of my reaction to sedation. She told me that she wouldn’t do anything different and there was nothing different she could possibly do to prevent post surgery anger. Why would she say that? Just to be clear, I woke up perfectly fine, my pain was managed well and I had no issues whatsoever that anyone mentioned to me. I wonder if she did alter my anesthesia meds and just didn’t want the patient suggesting how she did her job? Thank you so much for all your informational videos. I’ve lost count on how many cervical and lumbar surgeries I’ve had. I’m going to need another hand surgery this year as well. Thank you!

I have learned a lot from you, sometimes I think to much maybe.😁 I didn’t realize how much an Anesthesiologist does! I have been sedated several time and I have to say that I just relax and let it take over. I know you say we aren’t asleep but it is the most relax sleep I get. My mind stops racing, the ringing in my hears stops, that is wonderful, I feel no pain. Fortunately, I have never been nauseous when I wake up. A couple of times my body has just started shaking a lot. They give me something and it stops. That Has happened twice to me. I do not do any illegal drugs. I just find it to be a very relaxing rest for me.

I remember everything right up to going under. I hated my brain surgery because it took so long to get over the anesthesia. Regular surgeries like knee replacement, I wake up fairly fast and/or my brain is full steam ahead. And after the surgery for a week, I had thoughts that i knew where wrong cuz they where physically impossible to do. Won't do brain surgery ever again. Will do coils the next time. PTSD/anxiety sounds about right after brain surgery. I was really sad and down for quite some time afterward. Had to have knee replacement surgery 5 mths later and was scared to have anesthesia, but it was like all my other surgeries, woke up fast and was fine.

I have been healing (or several occasions, as if peeling the layers...) after ptsd, failed suicide attempts and general relational traumas, and during ayahuasca ceremony with a good shaman also healed some stuff that happened to me during a surgery (which I didn't remember anything from). So yes, definitely body keeps the score and also medical traumas can be healed to some extent too. I think with good guidance and care, ayahuasca, st pedro, mushrooms etc can play a key part in healing trauma induced by medical procedures, or actually botched anaesthesias that leave people in deep nightmares and anxieties after remembering the whole procedures and pains...

I had two surgeries back to back one in 22 and one in 23-in 22 I woke up after and the breathing tube was so uncomfortable and when they took it out my lip was swollen for a few days post-op. In 23 I told my anesthesiologist about that and he said “that was likely the fault of the anesthesiologist so I’ll be mindful” I told him “I know I’m an adult, but pretend like I’m a baby” he was so reassuring and after, I felt at ease. I say that to say, even if we are adults I wish all medical professionals would look to individuals as if they are babies when undergoing major medical procedures. Since my ordeal in 2022, I now go to every drs appointment and say “pretend I’m a baby” so they can handle me like I’m fragile. I will say that my male providers tend to exhibit more compassion than the female ones. The female nurses are usually nice, but the female doctors have been less nice and often are short when speaking with you, and condescending.

I've been under multiple times, every single time was different First time: Surgery for Cubital tunnel syndrome. I remember looking at the clock. 7 AM. They put me under, and I woke up later. No dreams. I was very tired, but progressively began to come to. When I opened my eyes, I saw the clock again. 9 AM. It was 2 hours later. The more awake I got, the more energized I felt. I was not only wide awake, I felt like I had a full night's rest. I asked to leave right away, they refused, I had to leave in the wheelchair. This one was the most confusing. It felt like I could run a block. Second time: Hysterectomy. I was hungry when I went I arrived. It was my only complaint right before I went under. The surgeon joked that I wouldn't be hungry for long. I woke up with the phantom sensation of needing to use the restroom. It was incredibly uncomfortable. I was very tired and couldn't seem to fully wake up. They asked if I wanted something to eat. I remembered being hungry when I went under, so I tried to eat. I wasn't hungry anymore and I could barely swallow. I looked at the clock. Two hours passed. I couldn't process the two hour difference of 5 and 7 AM. I slept when I went home for a few hours, and was fully back when I woke up. Third time: Double mastectomy. My memory failed the most here. I was in the operating room, and then I was being wheeled into the recovery room. I looked at the clock. Four-five hours passed, I couldn't read it though. My mother came to pick me up. She was telling me something, but my conscious was fading in and out. I don't remember what she said. I slept the drive home. Fourth time: Wisdom tooth extraction. They put me under with a needle injection. I closed my eyes and let it take me. I dreamed this time, unlike any other time. When I woke up, I had no memory of it happening. I was confused where I was, then as my memory returned, confused why I wasn't in the chair anymore. I was awake, but only barely coherent. I was too tired to speak and let everything around me happen as I tried to get my bearings. I slept the drive home.

It was like being so tuckered out you cant move, but your brain wont shut off for sleep. Tho i have another tooth extraction in 2 days but this time is my wisdom teeth. I wont mind if im aware again, i just hope they dont mess up my jaw. 😅 Oddly enough i got put under for tonsil removal twice in 2003 and 2013. Those times i was not aware. I only ever had two surgeries in my entire life. One in 2016 for wisdom teeth removal, and another in 2018 for an ovarian tumor removal. 2016 surgery: Going under twilight anesthesia was pretty fast, one moment I was awake, the next I was out like a light. And then when the procedure was over... my initial memories from coming to are a bit fuzzy and spotty, but I vaguely remember looking over to the counter beside me and pointing to a pad of paper (my entire mouth was numb and stuffed with gauze, so I couldn't speak), so I could communicate to the Dr in the room, and my mom as well (the procedure was done in the surgeon's office, not the hospital, so it was a smaller, outpatient place, btw). Of course, that's as much as I remember before my memory blanked out and I ended up writing some very wonky, nonsensical things, and my handwriting looked like a drunk person's 😂 and then after that, next thing I remember was being helped up off the chair and my mom walking me out and to the car parked near the front doors. 2018 surgery: It was another smooth transition going under, and it was complete/full anesthesia, of course. This story is less interesting because nothing out of the ordinary really happened to me for this time. Of course, I went under while anxious (doesn't help I have an anxiety disorder and I wasn't allowed to take any meds for it) but it didn't seem to have much if any affect on me. Once the surgery was finished, they wheeled me into the PACU, and I woke up wrapped in a blanket burrito. Nothing interesting really took place, I just felt really groggy and drowsy while coming to. Just that my mom was there providing me a light snack (some crackers and apple juice) and helping me change out of hospital scrubs and back into my regular clothing. Funny thing is, I was actually slightly disappointed that I wasn't feeling high and silly after waking up, so it was a slight disappointment 😂😅 So yeah, those are my two anesthesia experiences. Nothing too crazy or out of the ordinary.

I personally speculate that consciousness is not confined to the brain and that it precedes the brain. If I dream while under anesthesia and remember it, but I've been given something to turn off memories, how did I remember the dream? When did the dream happen? Did it happen only in my consciousness and it was buffered in consciousness to later be stored in my brain (based on current scientific theories of memory storage)?

I recently had a kidney stone "blasted" done while under anesthesia. Beforehand I spoke to an anesthesiologist while I was being prepped. When I was being rolled into the surgery room I was chatty and waxing philosophical about consciousness being unconscious, asking if I could give the staff a playlist for my listening pleasure (jokingly), I slid on the table for the procedure and the person I thought was the anesthesiologist that walked beside me en route, was totally different dude. I was like "where's the anesthesiologist?" Dude said " I am (pause) well, I am the tech that will be taking care of your anesthesia ". I had no idea that was a thing...then I started questioning if I was already under. He assured me I wasn't put the mask on and I said "So I'm guessing you didn't get my playlist?" He said "take 5 deep breaths and let me check." I later woke up, as they were rolling me to pacu, I remember being aggravated that all the dragons I had been fighting were gone and then asking why I couldn't feel my p___is. Later my comes in saying, "Well, I heard you were entertaining after the anesthesia."

I absolutely hate getting Anesthesia. A year ago I had gallbladder surgery and 2 weeks ago I had an unexpected surgery due to an MVA. I had 2 diff experiences. I don’t know why. First time breathing through the mask no resistance but this last time was the first time I encountered resistance trying to breath through the mask. I gently swatted the mask away and told them I can’t breathe it’s difficult but then the lady told me it was the filter and I said ok then lights out. Like I can’t breathe but ok. I’m still wondering why there was so much resistance to my breathing… perhaps that helps the lungs? I don’t know. Last time I had a week to prepare for the surgery with a breathing exercise device maybe that filter thing was a quicker way to help my lungs? I don’t know but I almost had a panic attack because they didn’t tell me I’d experience resistance with breathing… well, due to the MVA I was also recovering from a mild pneumothorax. They waited until my internal bleeding bleeding stopped before operating to fix my upper arm/shoulder joint. Anyways… watching these videos actually has been helping with my anxiety around getting put under. I don’t know why I get anxiety when I’ve never encountered a problem. So… what’s up with that filter and why was there or is there resistance to breathing in like you have to work significantly harder to breathe?

Are anesthesiologists familiarized with Early Repolaryzation Syndrome"? I was waken up during the surgery as ECG was showing heart attack and surgery was cancelled. All my ECG diagrams were investigated by 2 cardiologists after and both said I'm perfectly fine, the ECG graphs were fine, no heart attack, just the machine based on ST changes displayed "heart attack" and it happens if you have Early Repo Syndrom and they give me papers that I can have general anesthesia with no issues, no treatment needed, leave and forget. I'm wondering why my anesthesiologist didn't read the graphs during surgery, just machine interpretation and they step back with surgery? I was in so much stress and now I have to approach my surgery again (gallbladder removal) :(

I was a teenager when my father brought me to the emergency room. I was highly agitated because my allergies were so bad, I had blisters on my corneas and my parents decided to take me to the country during full ragweed season. The doctor gave me a shot of Versed "to calm me down," then proceeded to molest me. He probably assumed I would not remember these events, but I was not completely under sedation, and I have a vivid memory of what he did to me. I recently learned that I have the red-headed gene that affects how my body processes anesthesia. This appears to be masked by the other "hair color" genes I have, blonde and brunette. No one has identified the effects this has on me because I don't "look" like a redhead. Novocain hardly touches my pain. I don't trust doctors or anesthetists. My teeth are in bad shape, but I don't want to see a dentist. I gave birth to three children with nothing more than tylenol (afterwards, not during childbirth).

If you have to be under anyway, why not get a little psychological care too. I suppose ethics would have to be carefully monitored. Hypnotists will tell you that the brain is experiencing and hearing all that is going on. Memories are not available to the conscious mind but are indeed memories just like any other that the brain has access to. Medical staff need to watch what they say as the patient is listening and the brain accepts any suggestions as true in that state. If statements are made as to the success of the surgery or overall outcome....it can/is believed and manifested by the patient. Sarcasm and jokes are not interpreted as such by the patient and can be very detrimental. If the surgeon says "look at these arteries...this guy will be back in surgery in 6 months or dead".... Patients are essentially victimized by careless professionals. It is the unconscious belief system of the patient that determines the successful outcome of the individual....Surgery is only part of it.
