My son had his 2012 Ford Transit stolen last year, got it back next morning via posting it and sharing on Facebook. A woman on other side of town sent him a message saying his van was parked outside her house! Was amazed how easy these vans are to steal, Amazon even sell the tool to pick lock and with leather pouch for £26 with next day delivery! Once in van, its easy to reprogram another immobiliser chip fob, can even be a used one from another Ford, as long as its right frequency. Even I did it using Forscan after he had all other fobs deleted by someone else after van was stolen. Got extra deadlocks fitted to van now, hopefully thieves will look at van now and think its not worth the hassle to use power tools to cut through locks. Also had a red Sierra, 2.0i S, loved that car at time, still remember the plate. C467 ETG 😀

Many years ago a fellow radio engineer friend had a left hand drive Escort Mk2, with a concealed transmitter linked to the alarm. One night the receiver in the house woke up and my friend ran outside with the mandatory baseball bat. At first it looked like a false trigger, but the car thief was crouched behind the car, fortunately the bat made contact and collected a DNA sample. The downside was that the thief's head deflected the baseball bat and the car gained a small dent in the front wing. Naturally none of this would be condoned in our society, someone will cry like a baby over the rights of thieves.

@@NerdInMotion23 it is a sad state of affairs when law abiding people have to go to extremes to protect their property. Cars are a challenge to make secure, if you have access to just one of a particular type you can examine it at your leisure to see how systems work. Systems such as CANBUS are fantastic but also a liability, cars have been "compromised" via Bluetooth TPMS. It is scary how many recovered Landrovers have had Keyless Entry Modules swapped. Security is a challenging thing to mass produce...while still allowing cars to be repaired.

@@NerdInMotion23 Agreed, back in the 70s and on I wired a small toggle switch to the ignition coil feed and mounted it under the dash where it was out of sight but I could feel it because i knew where it was. Ok it stopped them stealing the vehicle but it still cost me a couple of door locks and a steering lock repair. With this type of digital theft they don't even have to cause damage. My diesel is over 10 yrs old and I've done the same with the fuel cut off solenoid, they can no doubt open the locks without damage but getting past the immobiliser still leaves the steering lock and my hidden switch. Hopefully even on 10 yr. old vehicles the young joyriders of the past know it's not quick to steal a car anymore, unlike what seem to be digitally savvy professionals who certainly ain't going to be interested in my motor.

First of all, excellent to help the public know that they need to do more to protect their vehicles. However, please be clear and accurate otherwise people may believe they have more protection than what they actually have. At 35.50 you stated that pulling out the canbus immobiliser then the car would still not start due to having cut outs. Please explain what these cut outs are? As far as I’m aware, the whole reason why canbus immobilisers have not been Thatcham approved is because they do not have any cuts and they only scramble the canbus system which leaves them useless even if you simply power down the device. Anyone with a canbus immobiliser such as a Ghost can test this for themselves. Simply power the unit down and you can leave it connected. Your car will start as per not having one fitted. Please can you clarify this point?
@NerdInMotion23
@NerdInMotion23 9 ай бұрын
Thatcham is a joke. Don't take any notice. After looking at some of the aftermarket products like Ghost and Pandora far surpass anything Thatcham has. In fact I would say at this point saying anything Thatcham is an answer is a joke. You pay £1500 and you have a small criteria to pass and you can say it's good but mostly because the British insurance firms that pay for Thatcham will offer some discount on your insurance. As for just powering the unit down that wouldn't be sufficient to start the car. I'm not going into how and why as I think that asking a question like that can be used for the wrong reason.
@philappleton8434
@philappleton8434 9 ай бұрын
I can only comment about the 2 different Can-bus immobilisers that I have removed from my own vehicles. All I have needed to do is power the device down and the car started as normal. There is even a clip on YT where a car is taken to Pandora to see if they can find the Can-bus Immobiliser, which they did and they also simply cut the red wire to power it down and the car started straight away. Sorry if I have been confused, however digital immobilisers were always that way and I always have one on my car because it is still better than other systems. I still think installed correctly they are a good deterrent. So just to be clear what you are saying is that if someone comes to you and only has a can-bus immobiliser installed then you guarantee that if a thief removes it from the car or simply powers it down then the car will still not start. This is an interesting claim to make when systems like the Ghost and Scorpion state their device does not make any cuts to a circuit. I’m aware that the Shadow is available for the Ghost which has a relay that can cut a circuit and would also need to be found if fitted, however this wasn’t mentioned in the video, only thing mentioned was if a car had a canbus immobiliser. Why not mention extras such as the shadow because I’m sure more people would add them when they know it’s available and makes the system so much harder to defeat. Thieves will already know these exist and so mentioning that it’s a good idea to ad a shadow to the system is not really leaking secret information.

The mention of AI is very valid. Us humans are very repetitious and a machine learning algorithm would identify anomalies in driver behaviour. It would learn your driving style, your acceleration / deceleration, the time you drive, the routes you take etc. To validate whether the car has been stolen, it could throw errors and measure driver response. A thief would ignore them or abandon the vehicle whereas an owner would acknowledge and respond to the alert. Obviously the tin hats would get all excited about that, but these are the same people whose everyday, repetitive browsing activity is also being collected by cookies and analysed by web servers 😂

Why is this becoming news now. This has been going on since keyless entry became common. Either fit proper kill switches / immo's or don't buy keyless cars. Don't buy cars that are that bad they need extremely overpriced parts every other week. The manufacturers have created this black market in stolen cars.

As soon as I saw keyless entry I knew how the miscreants would do it. I am surprised they only need one (radio) device. With just my credit cards - they are in slim foil-lined pockets, cost about ⅓ of a cup of coffee. With the car all it needs is a lidded tin box at home, & again you can get metal-lined wallets for pocket &/or handbag. Or you could just drive a car without keyless, preferably 5 years old. Compared to adding levels of complexity to the car & yer brain, a car that is not worth stealing has its merits. So do tin boxes!

It would be good to follow up with which immobilisers and trackers are currently difficult to hack. As mentioned in the video, there are trackers and there are good trackers. Must be the same with immobilisers. It was excellent to see that the immobiliser using driver button push input is rated highly. There is another which claims to make a system specifically for Range Rover that has additional dongles meaning you can use the keyless entry but still need this secondary interlock in order to start the car. I was wondering if anyone had any independent reviews on this and just how valid the claims from the company were?@@NerdInMotion23

At some point manufacturers must take responsibility for fueling crime by not designing security systems that work effectively. If someone wants your car they’ll get it, however when poor manufacture and design makes it as easy as Toyota, BMW and Land Rover (and others!) have done, they should be forced to replace stolen cars at no cost to the owner, bet they’d very quickly solve the problem then.

Seriously? Someone who's built a business on protecting cars from theft left his key vulnerable to relay attack? Call me cynical, but all these KZbin videos purportedly telling us the horror stories of vehicles being stolen despite manufacturer's factory fit devices being in place, involve one or more companies that are selling some sort of protection that's going to stop your car being stolen. I'm suspicious of this guy. He's telling you that factory fit security is worthless, yet that's precisely what most people rely on, and the vast majority of people don't get their vehicles stolen because they put their keys in a faraday pouch or box. I have a lot of friends with expensive cars, and I know no one who's had one stolen. I don't live in London or any of the other large cities, but some of my friends do.

Be suspicious all you like and have a look at the findings of the Office Of National Statistics car theft up 24%. Also you may want to ignore all the CCTV videos, and the immense rises in insurance premiums and in some cases cars not being able to be insured, the car auctions obviously they're faking massive crashes in price and unsold cars because of high insurance, to think about maybe the swathes of comments of people saying they had their car stolen and others. Take the tinfoil hat off for a minute and go do some proper research before you start pointing fingers. The aftermarket only exists because there is a gap in the market. Those gaps are formed for various reasons. Often manufacturers look at the aftermarket and take on technology and ideas to improve their own cars. Car theft is not a new problem but right now it's really bad.
