As a VHS collector, this has been a joke in the community for like a decade. Almost as funny as people who grade their tapes. I think it gets engagement for the same reason any articles like this do. It’s just people getting excited thinking that their old junk is worth a ton of money. Same as people who have tons of comics from the 80s and 90s. Also, fun fact as someone who collects Disney tapes, Disney had 6 different productions companies under their umbrella. Themselves, Buena Vista (which they used to distribute non-Disney cartoons as well as being the actual distributor for all the companies), Touchstone, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax, and Dimension. Which means that Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, some Hellraiser movies, the Scream series, and many other tapes are part of my Disney collection. They’re all part of a continuous list of catalog numbers on their spines.

I fully feel this because for more than a decade now I've had to repeatedly explain to my grandmother whenever she randomly has something like this pop up on her feed on her facebook that no, my old VHS tapes from when I was a kid aren't going to make me rich like they say. I do like to collect them though, thrift stores are a treasure trove for hard to find titles from all those production companies.

Also at that same job I remember seeing the cars tape before I knew its worth, I was like "that's interesting" and just put it back even though I collected vhs!! As someone who prefers to watch movies on VHS when I can this shite is just frustrating. I'm not terribly concerned with Disney specifically, but general tape speculation( or whatever you want to call it) makes it difficult to find decently priced tapes of the movies I want online. @meganheartswell Partly nostalgia, as I grew up on VHS. Partly the aesthetics. I just love the "patina" of vhs. Sometimes the tape has imperfections or gains them over time. The image is less clear and overall it gives a different, unique "flavour" to the look of the material.

What's funny about that? I have that one as do many people. It is not some rare thing. It was never recalled or swiftly discontinued BECAUSE of the cover art. That version only went out of print when the movie went "into the vault." It was the first release of the movie on VHS after it was originally in theaters, so there are TONS of copies out there. And since it was the first release of the film right after its highly successful theatrical run, more copies of it were likely manufactured and sold than the subsequent VHS release that came out years later. And the cover art being different on the later VHS release isn't some big deal either. Most of the time when a new VHS (or DVD, or Blu-Ray, etc.) release of a Disney movie comes out, the cover art varies to some extent or another to previous releases. Even if that original poster art never had that "innuendo" in it, odds are it still wouldn't have been used for that later VHS release.

"You just have to find someone willing to pay the price" So they've basically just admitted it's not actually worth that much. I collect VHS, and I have a few dozen Disney tapes. Collecting Disney is a bit of a meme in the VHS community. Everyone knows they aren't worth anything. Most of my own personal collection I obtained on a lark over a single weekend for about $10. That was for over 30 titles. Most serious communities even ban discussions about Disney, because it's always either newbie collectors asking how much their tapes are worth, or people making the same "I'm rich" jokes after picking up a Fox and the Hound tape for 50¢. I will say, that in addition to the Cars VHS being somewhat valuable, there's also a few Korean releases that can fetch a pretty penny. They released VHS a couple years longer than the US, so they got some titles like Wall•E on tape.

So for reference, I live in Sweden and over the years Disney movies have been re-dubbed. One of the most sought after original dubs that were at one point available outside theaters is Pinocchio, which was released as a rental VHS in the late 80's before it was re-dubbed for all subsequent home video releases. Due to it being so old, and rental only, there's not a lot of copies in playable condition left. I've only ever seen one copy listed and it sold for 200 US Dollars. that's Two Hundred, with 2 zeros. And that's probably the most expensive Swedish Disney release, unless you are sitting on the rumored 16 mm print with the original dub of either Lady and the Tramp or Sleeping Beauty, that were only available for institutions like schools. Even other original dubs don't sell for that much. I've personally bought both Alice in Wonderland with the original dub and Dumbo with the second of 3 dubs (the first one being considered lost unless Disney has a copy in the vault) for 10-15 dollars each, and if you are willing to take a gamble on Bambi (the first home video print run had the original audio by mistake, but it was corrected for the second run, and they look the same from the outside), you can get one for 1-5 dollars. It wouldn't cost you too much to just keep buying until you find it. Thinking that these tapes that are not rare and offer nothing what so ever you can't get on a DVD or on Disney+, save nostalgia and maybe some old commercials you can probably find on KZbin anyway, it just delusional.

@pinkdarkman 15 күн бұрын
Why the fuck was Sweden making dubs over and over again for the same movies though lol???
@Blixthand
@Blixthand 13 күн бұрын
@@pinkdarkman Well, that question could have a few different answers. For some movies or TV-shows it could be because of rights disputes or contracts not holding up for home media releases. Like if a TV channel bought the rights to a series and they funded the dub or did an in-house dub and then lost/didn't renew the rights to the series, they may still own the rights to their dub, so when some other channel picked up the series they had to do a new one. Or it could be because it was outdated or badly translated or not complete. In the case of Disney movies the most likely reason for most of the movies that got re-dubs was that the original dub didn't hold up to Disney's modern quality requirements, and no separate master of just the dialogue existed for remastering. Not all Disney movies have gotten re-dubs though, and most of the ones that have have only gotten one re-dub. This quality issue is probably the reason why Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, and the second dub of Dumbo got scrapped and re-dubbed. Dumbo is a special case because the first dub wasn't directed in Sweden, it was made in the US using Swedish emigrants as the voices, which is probably why it was re-dubbed the first time for theatrical re-releases. All of the others were used up until the home video market took off in the late 80's or early 90's. The original Alice and Wonderland and the second Dumbo dub was even used for their first respective VHS releases, and while there isn't exactly an abundance of those old tapes left, they aren't terribly expensive either. Bambi's original dub was put on the original VHS by mistake and Disney didn't think it was worth the expense to recall and destroy them all. About 70% of the first VHS release is estimated to have the original dub, but you can't tell from the outside which dub any given cassette has. They are pretty cheap though so buy a dozen and hope you get lucky I guess. Snow White and 101 Dalmatians can be found online, most likely recorded from old theatre reels that are now in private collections. Rumors are Peter Pan is available as well, but I haven't found it, except some clips on YT. Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty are rumored to have had 16 mm prints that schools and other institutions could purchase for smaller public screenings, that would have the original dubs on them, but it seems unclear if they ever existed or if any survives. Pinocchio's original dub was released as a rental VHS copy in the mid 80's, and very few copies in playable condition that wasn't recalled later now exists. I've only seen one listed 3 times and all three times it has sold for over 200 dollars, which all things considered ins't that much, but more than I could afford every time. Cinderella was one of the first to get re-dubbed only 17 years after the original dub, claiming outdated language use, though the "new" dub is still the one being used despite being more than 50 years old now. I have no records of the original existing anywhere where the public might hear it. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh was a movie of three previously released shorts stitched together with frame story. All three shorts had been dubbed before and can be found online (unclear if these were ever on VHS or maybe aired on TV or if they are form old theatre reels). Anyway, they decided to re-dub the entire movie as they had to do new voice work for the new scenes anyway. The Black Caldron was for some reason edited for the Swedish theatrical release, removing a few minutes, and it's likely that those removed scenes were never dubbed and that's why they needed to make an entire new dub when the scenes where added back in for a home video release. The original edited version can be found online. The last Disney movie (so far) that was re-dubbed in Sweden was Oliver and Co. Apparently some of the actors (or at least one of the main ones) claimed they hadn't been paid enough for the dub to be used in home video releases and that the contract didn't cover that and they demanded more money. In very simplified terms Disney said "F you, we make the rules" and re-dubbed the entire thing instead of caving and paying the original actors more. To my knowledge they even used the same script, while every other re-dub have had varying degrees of changes to modernize or bring the dub closer to the original or to re-interpret jokes and puns. The original dub of Oliver and Co was by mistake put on the first DVD release of the movie, but it was found out and most of them were re-called and destroyed. A few still floats around out there. You can't see which version it is from the outside, but confirmed original dubs in good condition can fetch up to 100 dollars with the right buyer.

I buy Disney VHS tapes at the thrift store for 50 cents each, then toss the tape and use the box with some cork to store my Disney pin collections. Guess I've been missing out on thousands of dollars of profit if only i asked online for someone to pay that price instead 🤷

I'm a casual VHS collector, and let me just say that ANYONE trying to hawk off their Black Diamond or Masterpiece Collection Disney tapes for THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS is either drunk, crazy, or hoping to scam somebody's grandma that will fall for the hype. What a bunch of bull. Some Disney tapes can run in the HUNDREDS (not thousands), but these are usually ones like the Cars VHS release (and Cars isn't the only DMC Exclusive tape released: there were also some of these collector's tapes pressed for movies like The Wild and Chicken Little). Early Walt Disney Home Video tapes (ones released when they were first testing the VHS/Betamax market) can also run for a pretty penny because there aren't as many still around due to their age and limited release. (And the late '70s-early '80s DiscoVision laserdiscs are a bit expensive in the collector's market, too. These were some of the first Disney releases pressed to home media.) There are other, more obscure oddities, like promo tapes for the parks and screener/retailer copies, that have been sold for decently large prices, as well.

I picked up the "banned" Little Mermaid from the $2 Disney clamshell shelf at my local record shop recently. Even getting $10 for it would be nice, haha.

I work at a thrift store and every day we get people coming in and buying as many VHS tapes as they can to sell them for three digits or more online. I've had to deal with customers pretty much hovering over me when I start shelving VHS tapes, many of them specifically looking for Black Diamonds. I don't think it's hit them yet that if you can find at least five of them in a thrift store or yard sale, they aren't that valuable. I've got my collection (some Black Diamonds but mainly the Masterpiece Collection) and I don't care what the value of them is; I just like collecting them.

Not a person who knows the value of jack squat, but I wouldn't pay more than 20 USD for these in pristine condition. Outside of media preservation I feel that these are all worthless. And this is coming from someone who grew up on VHS.

oh my god I found this channel, I used to watch these videos in elementary and middle school but was never subscribed, and once youtube stopped recommending me the videos I had forgotten about him. But some time in highschool, I had remembered but had no methodology for a way to look for the channel. Out of highschool now, having clicked on an old thelonelygoomba vid did I see a comment from this channel and knew instantly who it was T-T Imma definitely have to go back to watch the classics, sammy reactions, kazoo reactions etc. and see to catch up what new jokes has spawned in my absence :)

What happened and still routinely happens with the Disney movies is ebay not being transparent enough. You'll occasionally see one that did "sell" for these insane amounts. But if you go in and look at the bid history it'll be an user with no stars. Its very likely this was a new account made for money laundering, trolling the seller and never paying for the item or some one just trying to make them have value they don't and still not actually paying. News sites see these listings and run with them which helps the third option.

I can tell you how rare Disney VHS tapes are; I was given nine by my Grandpa when I was 12 since I had/ have a VCR in my room. They were the tapes my mom bought back when she worked at Sam's Club in the 90s. Then I got about ten literal Xerox boxes full of probably the entire Disney Vault when my neighbors from across the street moved. It's cool to own these as a movie buff, but not worth thousands. Probably .50 maybe a dollar if you're lucky.

I am a Disney Adult who had a beefy video tape collection as a child back when they were normal, only Disney manipulating the price level expensive. I am a nostalgia factory. I would never purchase the VHSs. Disney has made lots of merch in the style of the VHS cases in the past and I didn’t buy it, but if I wanted that vibe or nostalgia that’s the direction I’d go.

I assumed this would be a video about the Disney Vault. I mean, it's one thing for a random guy to list their Disney VHS tapes at $5000 on eBay, and quite another for a multi-million dollar corporation to intentionally make their home movie releases more rare in order to force consumers to buy them at a higher price.

I never bought in to this even way back then. "Get before they go back in the vault!" Yeah right. I could walk in to any goodwill or flea market and find them all over. Not so much now as I dont think goodwill sells vhs much anymore, but not that hard to find in reg second hands. Still see gobs of the dvds. Just because of my fondness for nostalgia, I probably have just about all thoes old movies in storage that I got over the years just to have. Thats there only value, nostalgia.

Collectors will know not everything's value goes up over time. I personally collect Toy to Life figures in my spare time and can tell you for a fact that 90% of the figures out there (that aren't Amiibo lol) are selling for less than their asking price. The only figures selling for their original price or more are - you guessed it - figures that were sold in low quantities or are made exclusive like chase variants. Sometimes a 50 year old copper coin is still just a penny.
