ah so good !! I have trust issues after Everlane and reformation (to be honest I kind of knew they probably weren't as good as they said they were, but I hoped) so finding ways to kind of dig deeper into brands and have those tools is super helpful!

as someone who sometimes makes my own clothes, i 100% don't understand how some things can really be sold for like $15 each!! it sorta goes into the "true cost" and if we (and the large profit margin companies) paid a carbon tax or "ethical tax" if there is a thing we'd be paying a lot more for these garments i'm sure. i'm kinda of the mind that REALLY fashion needs to not have so many seasons and so many garments don't need to produced at all! there are soo many garments in the world already, we don't need more!

Yes yes yes!! And so cool that you make your own clothes - respecttt. I strongly believe we need to unlearn the prices we've become used to because of fast fashion. Sustainable fashion isn't 'expensive' we're just approaching consumption wrong lol (we need to invest in pieces for life vs cheap disposable fashion). And yes! Imagine an ethical tax wow. The true cost of fast fashion is the planet burning isn't it 🙃

This was an amazing breakdown! I'm an environmental studies major and it's always so frustrating to me that we never talk about sustainability (or the lack thereof) and the fashion industry. I've been trying to do as much research on my own and this is definitely the most cohesive/concise summary I've come across. I know you said you'd go into fibers in another video but I wanted to ask if you've looked at viscose/rayon. I've been studying this a lot recently because viscose is thought of as sustainable since it's derived from wood as opposed to most of other man-made fibers which are made from oil. Unfortunately since the supply chain is so convoluted and disconnected at times, it's hard to determine whether certain viscose fibers are made from harmful chemicals like carbon disulfide, which poses a lot of environmental and human health risks. I'm sure you've already looked into this, but I'd be so interested to hear what you think about viscose and other manmade fibers. Thanks!

It's crazy that there isn't more info/research/breakdowns of this - honestly boggles my mind a bit considering I'm just a normal gal wanting to learn more haha like what are the profs/textbook writers/etc up to. Hm I know a bit but need to research more - I know specific types of tencel (similar to viscose?) are made responsibly and low impact, while viscose in general is now not because it's leading to intense deforestation etc. Will dive more into this in a vid!

I was in conversation with a small brand on the website 'Made Well' ...the brand is Softwear.. I messaged telling them I was assuming the 27% cotton is not organic because it just said cotton. I was explaining the problems with conventionally grown cotton and how I felt it was a real waste and shame as the rest of the fabric is lenzing modal. I also asked/ explained how they can make all the claims they want but without third party certification it really is just 'their word'. They sent me a message saying they have no intention of getting third party certification because it is too expensive and they are a small brand. They also explained that the cotton actually is organic...but they don't say it , the manufacturer has certifications. So my response was to ask if they could give me the name of the 'manufacturer ' so I could verify the manufacturers certification and therefore have the confidence that the sweatshirt I would be paying $105 dollars for is actually made with organic cotton. The response was "Because of this very reason that is why we do not say it. No we do not provide the manufacturers name, no brand provides who makes their fabric as anyone can copy. I’m not sure why I’m being interrogated when we do not make any false statements due to not having certifications and are very clear about our product being made in America and using lending modal and non toxic dyes being made locally and with water reduction/solar panel facilities. Thank you for inquiring but that is the best we can do for now.". She ( I'm assuming) felt like I was "interrogating " her because I wanted to know if what they claimed was actually true. So here is a prime example of the problem...why can't / won't they provide they manufacturers name, information, and certification number. So needless to say I am not buying their sweatshirt. This example just brings up so many of the issues in the fashion industry. If we buy supplements there is third party verification and government standard regulation making sure that what the company is saying is in the supplement actually is and same with food labelling and cosmetic products and yet in the fashion industry ( apart from third party certification) there is absolutely no accountability and no standard regulations. So I find it so interesting that this is the 'mindset' of this supposedly sustainable and ethical brand....they actually expect me as a consumer to just blindly believe what they happen to post on their product information, no questions asked, no accountability. And I get 'accused' of interrogating them. What? In my opinion if they cannot provide and back up their claims even from the very start of their business then they shouldn't be in business. I believe we as consumers need to hold them accountable and that means very high standards. It may seem harsh but if we want to see the entire mindset shift ( industry shift) I believe it is the only way. So even though it would be so easy for me to just believe them and get a sweatshirt I REALLY want the color of ...I'm sticking to my ethics. I can live without that color of sweatshirt. Not easy, but for me it's worth it knowing I'm being the change. I would be interested in a video about what to look for ...going over what each third party certification does and does not cover in terms of sustainability and ethics and what or how to write to and say to brands ( especially small ones).

Wow would not expect from such a large retailer/online shop like madewell! Thank you for sharing - and yup I like to air on the side of trust less and expect more transparency because most brands will not share everything (which is pretty much greenwashing depending on how they position/market themselves). Good on you for sticking to your values - you'll find a better sweatshirt from a brand worth supporting in the future! x

Ahhh thank you, making me emotional haha 💛 I try not to thrift fast fashion just because it doesn't last (since it's made cheaply). If I do it's usually trendier denim or something in a style that's more relevant now that I can't find from non-fast fashion brands if that makes sense!

Oh 100% - diversity and size inclusivity are two things I look for in any brand I'm considering supporting. At times, I admit I am more lenient on smaller brands that don't offer full extended sizing and it's something I want stand stronger for moving forward x

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. I'd bet you don't need to buy more clothes, but you do so every year because you want to try out new things. Encouraging others to buy things they don't need as an influencer or marketer is not ethical.
