A large part of why Matalas got away with as much as he did was because nobody higher up cared. Kurtzman was busy with all these other projects he's trying to ram through, Goldsman was busy with SNW, and Paramount saw Picard as a wounded duck on its way out the door anyway, enabling Matalas to pretty much retcon as much as he could (USS New Jersey, anyone?), and set up what was essentially a ten hour backdoor pilot. This has put Paramount, and particularly Secret Hideout, in the position of either backing Star Trek Legacy, or give the fans even more legitimate reasons to hate Alex Kurtzman.

I am very excited about the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy, however, I don't think 'fan service' or 'giving the fans what they want' is always a good thing in terms of storytelling. I also think I heard you say that, "Jonathan Frakes directed a load of Strange New Worlds' (episodes)', but I thought he only directed the crossover episode with Lower Decks, "Those Old Scientists" (he did direct a lot of ST: Picard and ST: Discovery). Anyway, fingers crossed that you are correct about Paramount/Amazon Prime Video's plans (and I really hope Terry Matalas is heavily involved)! I will make a ton of noise if it will help get this series across the finish line!🖖

Meanwhile, John De Lancie just said this about 'Legacy' > "I don’t think at this point, it will happen. There was a fun period of time that it looked like it could happen. But then there was the writers’ strike, which took a lot of people’s attentions away. I don’t think that they expected that season 3 was going to be as good and as well-received. They had already decided on another show. They were already moving in another direction. But it was certainly a really valiant and well-appreciated finale to The Next Generation."

Spot on - just as it was clear SNW would happen when we saw the Enterprise and Pike on Discovery, the prep work on Picard Season 3 was heading this way. On the other hand, NCIS: Red didn't happen in spite of the backdoor pilot during NCIS:LA, so who knows. But the groundwork has been done for a reason. --- SGA started the same way in SG-1, it was built up for years.

Yep, totally agree. I think that was the biggest misstep in season three. I thought he was excellent. I loved that he was abrasive towards Picard, and while initially the lack of respect towards Seven felt uncomfortable, the reason for that, and the eventual turn around made him an outright amazing character. I like your idea of bringing him back in virtual form. I could see him being a virtual mentor to Seven during difficult times; a shoulder to lean on. Honestly, I believe that you are correct in saying that it is part of the long term plan for Star Trek by those involved. But the other side of this is true as well, we will only get it if we make enough noise to say that it is something we truly want. The examples of shows (spinoff or standalone) that we have been teased with over the years and never actually got on our screens is far too long to mention. Shout it to the heavens, WE WANT STAR TREK LEGACY!!! Whether it was planned or a response to the fans, the only way to get it is to tell them we want it.
@DanielMReck9 ай бұрын
I called for Star Trek: Seven the moment she appeared in Picard S1, to focus on her with six other main cast, some new and some "legacy." I have confidence that Legacy (dumb name totally optimized to sell well) will be as well produced as Star Trek: Excelsior. Remeber that? Back when there was no doubt Takei had it in him to do a series following The Undiscovered Country, in part of the timeline where no Trek has gone before...or EVER. Sure, it sorta would have been a prequel to TNG, but with 80 years of room to avoid blowing up continuity, it would have been a SEQUEL to the TOS era, ready to build on that story rather than undermine it. Instead, the producers can't help themselves. They keep launching series crowded into the mid 23rd century, as if they can't figure out how to tell a story at any other time. They certainly can't tell a story in the 23rd centry Prime timeline without banging into continuity. This was proven when after years of Disco producers adamantly proclaiming that they were absolutely in the Prime timeline despite all the OBVIOUS evidence it couldn't be, they realized that they had dug themselves such a deep hole that they catapulted the series 800 years into the future and then retconned it out of existence with Strange New Worlds. Thankfully, this was promptly followed by Strange New Worlds retconning itself into its own separate Strange timeline, which drags Lower Decks out of the Prime timeline, as well. This finally dispenses with all the discontinuities between the Prime timeline (including Picard) and everything that has occurred in Disco, SNW, and LD. More importantly, it removes the handcuffs from the Strange New Worlds writers. It is no longer necessary that everyone who appears in TOS and later actually survive SNW, because they are in different timelines. No longer are Pike, Number One, Spock, M'Benga, Uhura, Chapel, Scott, the Kirk bros, and the Enterprise herself completely bulletproof and shielded by plot armor. Now they are actually free to be as interesting as Hemmer and Ortegas, who are BY FAR the most interesting characters on the series because they are the only people who don't have a predefined expectation about who they "should" be. Frankly, if the SNW writers wanted to do really well, they would outright say they are rejecting the Prime timeine in favor of this new Strange timeline. They should give notice that the audience should not make any assumptions on anything that they've ever known, and then they should write accordingly, consistent with what they have established themselves and with the basics of human behavior. (Had to mention that last part there, because the response to Burnham's perpetual emotional turmoil by her crewmates and Starfleet as an organization for not at all realistic in terms of how actual human beings exist... It should be obvious, but even in fiction, humans need to human if the story is going to work.)

I would not be surprised if Terry Matalas will be consulted on Legacy regardless of what he is committed to producing with other studios. Having Frakes as the main go to guy would be great. I have never had any doubts that Legacy would be a go, Paramount wants to make money and giving us, the fans is one way to make that happen It was just a matter of when with the only possible wrench would be Paramount's financial situation. As for Kurtzman his record is a mixed bag, I think that Kurtzman & Paramount will eventually part ways it probably depends on how much he is offered. I wish that SF Academy was not going to happen, but I will give it a fair chance. There is no way to stop it because for some unworldly reason a show centered around SF Academy has been bouncing around for years. Perhaps Paramount has learned its lesson regarding going too far with Star Trek? Maybe having Tawny Newsome in the writer's room is a good sign that the show will not be an embarrassment.

I don't understand why this is being presented as a lie. This is no different than a backdoor pilot. Every show I watched when I was a kid had a few backdoor pilots. They did a lot of development, hired a whole cast of characters and built entire sets, for one or two episodes. And if viewer reaction and network reaction were positive, they'd proceed with a spinoff. This isn't a lie, this is standard procedure. This isn't a situation where they'd have given us Legacy no matter what. If fan reaction were negative or ambivalent, you can bet they'd have scrapped the whole idea.

If the Academy series was to be set in the pre-TNG era, around (or shortly after) Enterprise-C's final mission, that could be really interesting for me. It could explore the changes and tensions brought about by the early stages of the thawing of relations with the Klingon Empire, with Romulans seeking to disrupt any moves towards an alliance (so an occasional threat)... and the emergence of the Cardassians as the leading "recurring" foe (leading up to the Cardassian war). There could be a crossover (of sorts) with the "offspring" of TOS era characters interacting with the "ancestors" of TNG era characters - depending on the position in the "timeline", we could see Admiral Paris as a cadet, being a contemporary with Nyota Uhura's niece, for example. Some stories could be set on a "Training ship", where cadets go off on "field trip" missions, so that there is room for plotlines to move beyond the confines of the Academy buildings. That would be a show I *would* watch, as the "Lost era" is an untapped resource waiting to be exploited.

I think, having had their "fingers burnt" a little, with Discovery, they aren't going to throw money into a project that isn't going to be sellable... That means, they need to be sure that fans do want it, before spending the money on it (especially when you consider just how expensive these kind of shows are to make, these days). Yes, it might always have been the plan to take the Legacy idea forward... but we all still need to give them the confidence to put money into it. If we want it, then we need to tell them, and show them... or why should they put money into it? They are in business, after all, so I don't really blame them. Unfortunately, I also feel like Alex Kurtzman might hold Legacy as a hostage, to make sure he gets his vanity project (Academy) made... so he thinks that an ultimatum like "support Academy, or you don't get Legacy" might work. Personally, I'm not sure "Starfleet 90210" or "Star Trek: Hollyoaks" would be my kind of show, but I do understand that some people love the idea... and it could be an interesting concept (if done right) - so I'd give it a try, regardless of whether Legacy hung on that or not. I like Sci-fi... and for me, although the first season of Discovery wasn't great, it did find it's feet eventually, and although it might not be "my Star Trek", it's not a bad sci-fi show.

I'm convinced fans focus overmuch on very superficial and familiar aspects, ignoring the things that make a franchise work, and the process it took to get there. For example: old characters and familiar names, IMHO, completely ignores what made old Trek so great. TNG wasn't great because Stewart, Picard, Frakes, or Riker: it was great because of the writing and Roddenberry's vision. Instead of Spock look-alikes, they should be looking for Braga write-alikes.

I find it hard to believe (sadly) that there is nobody in Hollywood smart enough to give us a new show. I love Jeri Ryan (not just in Star Trek, but in all the roles she's played over the years, she's a great actress). But, the fact is she is not getting any younger and at some point (I think) her age will show and as great a character as Seven is, men will lose some interest if they don't do this some time soon.

This is amazing news. Not completely unexpected, but I don't think anyone can be blamed for assuming it wouldn't happen. We are talking about an industry that has set up numerous next seasons of TV shows, or ending a movie looking like there's another coming, or torn down expensive sets only to have to rebuild them for an unexpected sequel. However, I think at this stage the franchise has proven itself to have an audience, and is likely to last forever. I don't get the issue with Kurtzman. But I'm not a typical Trek fan. I loved the original as a kid. Disliked all the early movies bar the fourth. Enjoyed Generations having never cared to watch TNG! Have never seen DS9, having twice given up on the first episode, with a ten year gap between attempts! Loved Voyager. Enjoyed Enterprise. Hate that theme tune! Watched TNG finally just a few years ago. The first season is the worst Trek I've seen, but eventually got into it. Love Discovery and Picard, and Strange New Worlds is the pinnacle of Trek for me. Oh, and only cared for the last JJ Trek movie. So Trek's a mixed bag of amazing and unwatchable for me. I'm an old new Trek fan I guess. And I'm extremely excited to see Seven's Trek show. What a character, what an actress, what an adventure this could turn out to be. I think having Frakes being involved is an excellent choice. I'm not the biggest fan of his directing, specifically the camera work, but he clearly works well with actors, has a passion for his work, and seems to be a genuinely decent person.

Here's what I believe: the Star Trek Legacy will indeed happen. The problem is I think Paramount is focusing too much on the Starfleet Academy series. I already think the series is going to flop. Basically for the biggest reason that nobody really wanted it. I mean let's be honest here. Nobody really wants a Star Trek 90210. In fact I really think that Paramount has not put out trailers or promotions for the series for that reason. In fact we know it's not going to work because Paramount has already canceled series that were actually meant for a younger audience that doesn't really work unless it's on a different network. Technically I think that the academy series is just in between fluff as a possible placeholder for Legacy. The reason, I think that Paramount wants to confirm that Terry Matalas is on board before continuing. Also not to rag on Academy much more, but, people hated Discovery for Jumping the Shark to the 32nd century. People are quite possibly going to hate Academy for taking place in that century as well. Anyway that's just my take on it and what I believe that Paramount is waiting for to do

Its all like "we have an idea for a new show, lets put some of it in a show already running and see if the fans want it", of course it will come if the people want it because they love our money.

If Paramount have done everything you say, then they will have done a deal with Terry Matalas to have him on side as well. I'm looking forward to it when it happens.

Academy (aka Stra Trek 90210), the show nobody asked for and few seem to want. I wonder what happens to Legacy if/when Academy fails.

I'm not sure my opinion matters anymore because I stopped watching any new Star Trek after Voyager completed its run. Don't like the direction Discovery and Picard went in the writing so figured, I'm not the "modern" audience the company wants to make a show for. I've heard good things about the season 3 of Picard and while I like to know where a new show will go with the writing, I'll play a wait and see before buying another streaming service. Certainly if other shows worth seeing will be on the streaming service that can help pump up my desire to put that monthly fee down, but it's harder for just one show. Speculating on whether Legacy gets made? I don't know. You need a little bigger budget for shows like this, and people that can tell good Sci-fi stories. If you haven't read Lem's "Microworlds" then even if you're a seasoned ScFi author, you likely haven't done your homework. It shouldn't really be that hard to create shows that appeal to a mass audience. All my friends don't care that much about the Sci-Fi genre but despite all the years of crime procedurals, medical dramas, and westerns they still have an appetite for these genre's. That's not to say their's no interest in Sci-fi or fantasy either. My neighbors are Star Trek fans and my brother in law was even recently persuaded to watch some serious anime fantasy. It's really; "All about the story." Appeal to your broadest audience follow good story telling rules, and all other things being equal, your shows should attract an audience.

Not holding my breath. But the, Star Trek Legacy, TV show I'd like to see developed wouldn't be centered around a single ship or space station/outpost, but a weekly rotating anthology series that would follow the lives and careers of the different Canon and non-canon characters from past shows, books and games. Such as Captain Elias Vaughn, former Capt of the USS James T. Kirk, who transferred to DS9 in non-canon books. As well as Nog & Dax.

the issue with J.F, is he was involved with Picard earlyer seasons, and he went along with the garbage.. so i dont know how i feel about letting him do stuff without someone over himh who loved the 90's Trek wiht all its greatrness and flaws, we seen how Patric Stewert influence was a bad for Picards S1 and S2, hes views dont align with 90's Trek anymore. and J.F supported him, and we got two seasons of awfull content, for one thing they where all good story's just not good Star Trek.

Yep. There is WAY too much money involved in creating a series these days for these decisions to be made in response to fan letter-writing campaigns. Possible in 1968, not possible in 2024. These things are planned years in advance. They're using current series to air pilots for future series. Unless the fan reaction had been overwhelmingly negative for some reason, SNW was going to happen, and so will Legacy - unless external circumstances get in the way (like, who will own the project a year from now, will Paramount+ exist in 2025, etc.)
@mlbslugger629 ай бұрын
What external circumstances could get in the way is what you are seeing in these comments, negativity. They watch these channels, even this cheap upstart clickbait kind of channel. Content like this doesn't help either. Especially nowadays as you said about costs. Too much bitching by fans that think they are owed something or over use of the term 'fan servicing'. Too much of that will make the powers that be simply shy away from the idea.

How th eheck will they know if the fans want it without our ever getting to see it. i thought I'd want to see Discovery and Picard, but I didn't. I would like to see Legacy. I only watched SNW because it was a new Star Trek and I'm an avid fan, so it was a wonderful surprise.

Don’t care about the lie aspect. It doesn’t take a Rhode Scholar to figure out these types of machinations. The only thing I’m interested in is Terry Matalas being at the helm. He doesn’t necessarily have to direct the episodes, and I agree that Jonathan Frakes is an excellent director but in the absence of Terry writing it, I have no faith.
@wingsabre9 ай бұрын
Personally, I think legacy will air when SNW ends. Studio executives rarely want two of the same property out with the same name. Because SNW has the enterprise and Legacy has the enterprise G, there’s risk of brand confusion. DS9 initially wanted to call the Defiant the Valiant but was told no because Voyager was in production and they didn’t want two hero ships that started with a V. It’s the same logic.

Picard season 3 truthfully wasn't all that and a bag of chips (crisps), too many continuity issues, sure it was the best since Star Trek: Enterprise, but Terry was simply not as flawed as Kurtzman, only slightly better, fans need to stop praising him and get honest!
@qui-gonrick70029 ай бұрын
It definitely relied a lot on fan service, but I can't agree that it was only "slightly" better. Picard S1 & S2 are unwatchable garbage.

@robertheinrich29949 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. I guess there are beancounters who can only be persuaded with a big fan reaction which means money. they don't think in terms like fan service or continuity. that's why discovery was such a mess. it was "let's do something with spock and invent his adoptive sister, let's bring in somebody gay, and whatever". there were very good ideas and certainly a lot of money for special efects, but still, but first of all was an approach that said: let's give the marketing guys a shot. and I'm not sure, if we have left that phase. discovery and picard were the same. there is this big bad thing that will end everything, and during one season they manage to stop it. just for the next season to face an even worse opponent. that's why lower decks and prodigy were such successes. in lower decks, it was everyday life on a starship. the cerritos did not save the universe every time it showed up to some new planet, they tried to solve the mundane problems. and there are good stories that can be told when the universe, the galaxy or just the federation are at ease and not at the brink of extinction.
