This is so common in the modding community. Dude releases a product w/pre-orders, it makes a ton of money/sales, good communication and update for a few weeks/months, communication drops off, customers want answers, seller ghosts, gets defensive or both, customers start getting mad, and it leads to a months/years long shitshow in which people may or may not get their stuff, and everyone had a bad time when they didn't need to. Moral of the story STOP TAKING PRE-ORDERS AND COMMUNICATE WITH THE PEOPLE GIVING YOU MONEY.

something I've noticed about all of these guys is that they all work based off of pre-orders/wait lists, fail to meet the deadlines they imposed on themselves when taking the pre-orders/waitlists and then get bitter when people try to keep in touch with them. if they would just sell when they have stock, no wait list, no pre-orders. then the timeline wouldn't matter. they could take as much time as they want, because they would be under no obligations to deliver a product not yet produced.

@StopChangingUsernamesYouTube2 ай бұрын
With a pre-order setup, you can potentially even have a revenue-positive buildout, or at least only bearably negative until you get things rolling and start selling units beyond the reserved stock. The latter's mostly reserved for large businesses, extremely wealthy individuals metamorphosing into a large business, and people on some pretty regular budgets and a dream taking the first step to obtaining bankruptcy protection. Edit: Also there's really no better way to gauge interest and intent to buy a product than someone throwing you the entire asking price before it even exists. Yeah, the potential for abuse is really obvious, but it doesn't make it any less of a decent idea to get things off the ground. Just one of those situations where everyone involved needs to be careful and figure out early whether a possible outcome is "failed product design, oh well" and no refunds because it all went into R&D.

@@StopChangingUsernamesKZbin Right but if you really have 300+ people willing to wait six months for something, you can toss the product on ebay and potentially get 2-5x your price from some whales who dont want to wait. A simple "things have been hectic with real life, unable to work on any orders at this time, will update after life has smoothed over" would've gone over better than literal radio silence. The one thing I've learned from seeing people commission art and commissioning art myself is communication is key; all too often I'd hear about an artist just poofing into the ether for months on end, some never to return, and having essentially stolen that commission money. This is why contracts are a thing. I think buyers of products like these should take lead times with a grain of salt, but some people have been waiting nearly 2 years, and it's unacceptable to take their money and leave them in the dark. It also seems to take public pressure to coax even the slightest update from him, so I hope this causes him to address the situation properly and AT LEAST fulfill refunds to the people who want them.

At least from my perspective as a Brazilian, it's hilarious to see someone say that $350 a year after is $300. Inflation does not change that much from year to year. Currency inflate about 0.01-0.10 each year the past 4 years and beyond even. Even our precious Real. From 2023 to 2024 for example, $350 would value at $360. And even then, that's not how economy works and it isn't the value of the currency that really makes something valued the same in the equivalent of economics, but rather the prices surrounding it. Is it something truly worth less, if everything around it stayed the same price ? I haven't watched the video yet, but this comment baffled me in the range of value you said.

Total outsider to this, but it seems the real "fix" would be to have a more community-based approach. An open design that has _zero_ proprietary bs to it. Schematics that can be taken to a machinist, maybe even some 3-D printing diagrams (which could be used to create a cast) and details on how to prep and assemble the parts so it's something _anyone_ could do. And from there people could be cool and offer to make up so many for other people (whether as a gift or to sell reasonably since the plans are openly available and charging too much will just mean people will find a way to make their own or buy from others rather than buy yours).

The fact that there even is consideration of a "chance" at getting one after you already paid for it, let alone the fact that people are afraid to criticize out of fear of losing that chance, is such a toxic situation. There's no excuse to sit on other people's money and not refund them when they ask. The fact that he is ghosting refund requests is the worst offense. If you have stuff going on in your personal life that makes it too hard to deliver on your promise, then stop allowing preorders and just give people their money back at the very least.

Lost about 40 lbs, mental state was somewhere between delusional and psychotic. Meanwhile no matter how hard I tried clients were never happy. They were more accustomed to the service a corporation with thousands of people on staff could provide. Completely ignoring they were paying more of a lesser product, want your cake and eat it too type situation. Finally hired a few people over time. It took six full time employees to do what I was trying to do alone. Long and short, if you start a business or selling a product start small and grow big. Keep in mind you will be the CEO, the technical department, the customer service department, the warranty department, the finance department, the IT department, the marketing department, etc etc and NO ONE will give a s***. Closest I got to a day off the first couple years was the day I did my personal and business taxes. Really make or break a person tbh. Will your mental state crack and you throw your arms up in the air in pure despair feeling like a complete failure at everything or buckle down and keep fighting (assuming it doesnt literally kill you) until you can afford to pay other people to take some of the burden off you?

It's just a terrible product to make one-offs. People tried to 3d print, etc but it's too finicky. It's impossible for a thousand people to just buy lathes to make a single stick. Factory batch production makes more sense.

Man, speedrunners are some of the most entitled people on the planet. "I bought a product from you. That should obviously come with lifetime replacements at your own expense including paying for all shipping" No wonder so many different people gave up trying to offer this product to insufferable customers.

Will never understand the love for the 64 controller. But why doesn’t someone just work on an adapter to fit a Hal Effect stick into it? Over $300 for a stick module is straight up highway robbery. Metal or not.

It's crazy to me. I replaced an N64 stick about a decade ago with a random one off the internet for much less money and haven't had any issues since. It's very precise and while it looks a bit different the feel is the same. And if I could Google "how to replace n64 analog stick" in 2014 and get a quick and easy to follow guide to crack open the controller and replace it myself without breaking anything, any kid in 2024 can probably do it.
@MrKrewie2 ай бұрын
i remember even back in the day when playing goldeneye or mario kart, just struggling to use the stick, was fine for the time since it was before i played anything like the playstation or dreamcast but i can't see myself using it today, if i get a n64 again, im investing in some controller adapter and just use something else...

The crazy part about it is that judging by how everyone whose tried making them goes way overestimate, overbudget and fizzles out, either with subpar quality or subpar wait times, these are actually worth way more than $350.
@AndrewAJT2 ай бұрын
Simple solution for these type of projects, you shouldn’t have to pay until the product is made and ready to ship. Paying and then waiting indefinitely is ridiculous if I’m understanding this correctly. $300 is also way too much for something like this when alternatives are readily available (ie hori, or GCC like I use)

@treybordo2 ай бұрын
the thing is, i 100% agree, but Biinny did do that orginally, and without a commitment he could just boot you out of the waitlist, as he almost did when people were mad about Xein.
@agg422 ай бұрын
The economics of manufacturing physical parts makes your "simple solution" hard to swallow. Assuming this person is relying on a machine shop... Machining a single part (and even a dozen) costs EXPONENTIALLY higher than 100pcs. So it's foolish to order parts to be manufactured as orders arrive but it's also a poor decision to under/over manufacture for a better price/part. Now I don't know ANYTHING about the N64 joystick but I do know a fair bit about manufacturing. So I can say this with confidence, manufacturing (in the US at least) is not cheap. Expect >$100/hour it takes to manufacture a SINGLE component, add in material costs, taxes and shipping. And suddenly your "$10 dollar component" looks like it's going to be closer to $10k. Btw the usual payment terms are 30/60/90 days after part delivery. So without any prior investment, it's the business owner who has to front the cost of manufacturing and undertake the financial risk. From the consumer end, consumables seems like it's ready whenever our whim desires it but reality is hardly like that. There is a reason why even seemly large corporations use platforms like indegogo/kickstarter to launch products. Most however are using private/pubic investment so it's not obviously apparent the public.

You don't pay taxes for the first 12K in the UK. Get that, you don't start paying all taxes after the 12K a year, you only pay what's above! By that I mean that if you open a tiny company, make 12,001 GBP, you are taxed on 1 GBP for the whole year... All thresholds work this way. Going to the UK is a smart move for tiny companies. Or you can just run with everyone's money and not declare anything, that works too.

As someone who was in the server themselves, I can confirm there´s nothing going on anymore. I saw a few things here and there but nothing related to the Brewsticks ever, the only active thing I saw in the server is a bot that updates whenever someone broke WR in SM64. Other than that there was hardly anything else going on activewise, people either were just in the server for the updates on the stick or just were there to keep tabs on it. I eventually left the server myself because I geniunely wanted to see the stick to be a success but that never happend and I am disapointed. It was a nische community I can´t deny that but still, it sucks when you hardly provide updates to something that has been in waiting for years and only provide full refunds instead of giving a replacement product or something to compensate for the waiting time

I don't mean to play devil's advocate too hard, I've never touched an N64, nor played a Mario game... but this is just one man. I understand the expectations of prompt orders and delivery times, but this guy isn't some lousy dropshipper or a billion dollar megacorp like Amazon. It's one guy trying to make something seemingly quite special and artisan and thus couldn't keep up with the demand. It's overambition, sure, but not malice, maybe he needs to hire a customer support manager, who can deal with the incoming waves of requests and questions while he works on his craft. EDIT: Nevermind, I watched the last few minutes of the video... yeah it doesn't look great.

People who delay products for months on end and keep promising nearby ETA's are the worst. Dealt with them before from someone selling video game merch. Most people wouldn't care if the dates were honest; I'd rather be told something would take 12 months than continually have it be "2 weeks away" for a year. It's such a futile waste of mental resources wondering when the product's gonna arrive and dwelling on whether it's a scam or not, that hurts worse than the money IMO.
