There was a water leak in our downstairs bathroom ceiling, it was from 2nd floor bathroom. Opened up ceiling, noticed sign of previous water leak and JB WELD on toilet sink wye fitting. Call a plumber for replacing lines ($300), cost of doing it right… priceless. We opened up and closed drywall ourselves.

In many areas, especially the dry West, water is currently pumped hundreds of miles, treated to the finest drinking water standards, and then most of it is thrown on the ground to grow lawns or used to flush poop down the drain. When real, lasting water shortages arrive, this will be an unsupportable practice. Eventually homes need to be dual plumbed with separate pipes for potable and non-potable water. Retrofit will be a lot easier for home run systems.

The comments on here show me why building or renovating a home can be such an issue. Way too many opinions and so few people who understand the basics. While the above is not right for every setting its better than most. Each project requires thoughtful input, too often it's just someone doing the same thing in every situation. I've worked with some awesome plumbers but have fired a number also. What sets them apart is the ability to solve an issue, not just make a new one.

You have to think outside the box. I believe what Mr Holmes is trying to pound into peoples head that it may cost a little more to do it right the first time and not to butcher the job and have to redo it properly after everything is closed up and finished. When everything is finished and you run into problems it is obviously more expensive. If you have a problem at a later date and for example the ceramic tiles are no longer available, now you repair will obviously be more extensive and more expensive. So the people with the notion of "just getter done mentality" would do whatever to finish the job. Regardless if done properly or not.

I could still see pressure balance being an issue if enough people put on water at the same time. But it's because the main supply line is like 3 quarter inch pipe so it's bigger. If you have one half inch pipe that feeds you're shower and toilet cold. That could cause you're shower sandwiches

i have no idea where you are at..... i have been a roofer for 20 plus year and their are many pipes that go through a roof the poo pipe is 4i nch or 3 but the kitch sink is maybe 2 or 2 1/2 and there could be an 1 1/2 for like a sink or washing machine drain there is no need to make all vents 3 inches

inside the roof they can be less than 3 inch but all the pipe that go through the roof should be at least 3 inch. it is exactly as he said (at least in cold weather area) the water vapor will cause ice and may clog the pipe during winter. at least it is what we do because of the same reason.

90 % or more will have roof vents that are different sizes.... all most every roofing manufacture want 4 nails per shingle. in a high wind district like the coast they want 6.... some specific areas with hurricanes maybe more.... when i do a video there i mention why its not the same.... maybe all of canada is 3 in pipes

Upc and ipc both say if you're in a climate where the temperature Falls below zero you must increase the vent penetrating the roof. I'm just guessing but I would say the northern half of the United States and Canada fall into that category. Been a plumber since 1985 and have never put smaller than a 3 inch vent out the roof.

Ok, as a 50% Canuk myself, I would like one of the knowledgeable guys from the North to explain to me the Canadian love of ABS piping. Is it better for low temp use? I see nothing but PVC here in the states for DWV work, but every time I see drain and vent pipe on Mike's show, it is all black ABS. Does anyone know why?

PVC is too brittle, abs is more durable so it can withstand colder temperatures better than PVC.

Late in the game here but yes you hit the nail on the head, Canadian building codes, NSF, CSA for manufacturing companies require for use of pipe to withstand our extreme weather changes up here eh. We do use abs piping for residential and some low rise, grey systems 15 PVC for low rise and XFR for low rise and some high rise and industrial applications. Our grey PVC is different than the States white PVC. So we still use PVC grey and XFR. Also many far western States use a great deal of abs fittings and pipe.

I think a lot of this was up charge from plumbing to art. Under each sink and toilet is a shut of value. and it is good to have one shut off value for the whole house. But that is just a waste. If you have a problem with your sink are you going to run down to that (art) room and shut it off? No. Also it is good that you vent each bath room. However going though the roof with a 3 inch from a 2 inch ?

I'm about to re-pipe my whole home. I'm going with copper manifolds and propex/F1960 (he removed propex and replaced with copper crimp rings. Why?! Stick with propex...) I've personally had a construction crew run a nail into my copper plumbing while nailing on new sheathing. I had to rip into the wall one night, through the sheathing, to expose the copper lines, remove the punctured pipe and replace with a new piece and slip rings with the whole home's water off. If I had been able to simply turn off one valve I could have left the problem until the morning...and even then done the work without shutting down the rest of the home. What if a pipe bursts? Or you're doing a bathroom remodel? What he removed was Uponor's EP manifolds. They're meant to be used not for home runs, but for a hybrid system - instead of trunk and branch, you run a single trunk through the home, using the EP manifolds to feed a bathroom or kitchen and continue the trunk to the next manifold (hence why those manifolds are not valved. They're meant to be buried in walls or under the floors.) The manifolds he used have brass ball valves - they allow full flow through the pipe and are more reliable than other plumbing valves. I may not like the copper ring system, but the work he did looks right. I'd accept nothing less than a valved manifold.

I didn't service plumbing all my life. I like a hot water return, but 1 in the house not every bathroom. . and the way i piped the couple i did do, i insatlled it in a way that it doesn't require a pump.. Seperate returns running to different areas with pumps, in my professional opinion are going to cause to many issues..1st as you pump hot water to wait to use it, it still heats & cools, running your heater much more than designed. So there is the monthly extra gas charge #2, thenalso the water heater will not last as long #3.. To me money spent has to = the comfort it gives me.. To me it can't happen. I'll run out a gallon or so while i brush my teeth waiting for the hot water..believe it or not I run my life with that kind of leeway, i'll always have that minute or 2 thank God, i couldn't imagine being that pressed for time.

I don`t believe that this "home run" system is needed. I use a manifold and run 3/4 to each bathroom and tee them off at or in the bathroom wall. To get instant hot water, I then run an extra 1/2 inch recirc line back to the water heater and install a recirc pump. This way I can isolate one bathroom if needed while the other bathrooms are kept up and running. I don`t like running 30 separate lines to each fixture. It`s just over kill. So one 3/4 hot, one 3/4 cold and one 1/2 recirc line to each bathroom is all that is needed.

I know this is almost a year-old comment, but I completely agree that this is the best way to run plumbing. I've lived in a house now with a manifold system and a branched system. Here's my morning routine; I turn the shower while I'm using the loo so it can warm up. It's 30 feet or more of pipe away, so it takes 45 seconds to warm up. I hop in and take a shower. I then hop out, dry off, and turn on the sink that's 12 inches away to shave. In the manifold system I got to sit there waiting for another 45 seconds for a dozen gallons of cold water to go down the drain. In the branch system, I had 1-2 seconds of cold water to flush out, and the hot water is at the sink. I'm fairly old, and I've had to turn off the water to the entire house to work on plumbing less than ten times. Once every five years? The benefit of a manifold system is so completely overshadowed by the fast availability of hot water I wouldn't suggest anyone consider anything other than a trunk and branch system. Insulate that branch and add a recirc pump and you will be the happiest person in the world!

If they buy a house with a mixing valve already installed, then they should notice the problem right away and get it looked at, either by talking a walk along the pipes, or call in a plumber, who would see it right away. This is very true. Not great for a really big house. My workaround is to have two tankless for each half of the house. Have the tankless as close as possible to the bathroom to maintain hot water runs less than 20ft.

In a small home like most can afford, manifold or not the biggest waste is not insulating the pipes. If you insulate the pipes properly than a manifold system in a SMALL home is not really a waste. Personally, 3/4" lines to each room then they split to 1/2" for each fixture in that room. This way you can still shut off one room at a time, not lose pressure at the shower when a toilet somewhere else is flushed, you use less piping than a total manifold, and have less heat loss.

That Home Run system wastes so much water it is unbelievable! Everytime you use hot water you have to flush the entire water line back to hot water source. You can use that system on the cold water lines but not hot! The Hot water system should be a Master line maybe One inch in diameter running as close to each user as possible and isolation valves as close to each user as possible. Then at the farther most hot water user there should a small pump on a timer and temperature sensor that keeps the hot water line at usable temperature and it recycles water back to the hot water heater. Naturally the source line should be well insulated. I've seen so many house layouts that have hot water users at the farther-est ends of the house AND on outside walls too boot. Quick and cheap, that's all that matters any more!

Way too extensive on the plumbing. All you need is one shut off valve on a home. Shut off valvs at the toilets, sinks water heater, dish washer, The rest is a toatal waste of money , I would never ever use copper again , Pex pipe is way better and easier to install, and will preform better in freezing weather!

The potential for disaster is installing ABS drains. Use PVC. Oh, and that laundry sink drain is perfectly fine. It runs into the floor drain above above the trap.

Why is that? The only difference between PVC and ABS is that PVC releases chlorine gas when burned. I've used ABS for 42 years and never have had a problem. Besides, it ain't the material. Shitty work is shitty work.

replace all the pex because a few of of the lines are kinked? i agree scrap kinked lines then replace. you opt to charge the customer replace it all. just admit it, make more money on the job. why did you not then go or state with your expertise using pex A which is less prone to kinking and can be warmed to remove kinks if they ever occur. then the copper manifolds, why not run less overall pex and run dedicate larger lines to bathrooms kitchen then under the sink in the wall cutout making a manifold for all the feeders on that trunk line? again you make more money doing this and it looks cool to the customer right? not working in the customers best interest are you?

My boss would get any moe of the street to run the pex lines..but when they leaked they had no idea how to remove & replace leaks. I love copper to me it's a professional job, if you want you can shine the pipes with brasso
