I have used Kelty external frame backpacks for over 40 years in the backcountry. I currently have a Kelty Super Tioga, that despite its weight, is my go to for anything more than an overnight trip. The design of this pack is outstanding in terms of comfort and weight distribution. At age 60, I can carry a 40# load up an over high elevation terrain in New Mexico (Lake Katherine), and Colorado (Four Pass Loop). Bought mine used off eBay 5 years ago. Still looks and performs like it did when I got it. Durability is a 10!

The only down side I’ve found with external frames is they snag on brush easier than internal frames. If you’re using open trails where that isn’t a big concern, this pack is a great way to go. I like mine. Good review.

Just picked one up brand new, the last model ever made. I hope it is as durable as the old versions. My neighbor has one from the 70's - he has never bought another backpack since.

I have a super tioga 4900 and love it. carries a lot of weight comfortably. been packin it for years and did not realize it had that pocket behind the pocket on that side, I guess I will be putting my trekking poles in that now :)

i like the surplus external frame backpacks (ALICE, rifleman's molle 2), for 3-4 years i used an external aluminum frame pack my dad gave me when i was 15... and that backpack was like 25 years old(still got it stored in my attic, ready to go)

Great looking ruck. I like external frames too but have used the internal and yeah I'd say it's more of a personal choice also than which is better. Thanks. atb Opal

I have several kelty packs, all internal frame. Thinking about making the jump to an external.

I'm considering an internal frame pack as my first one. The Teton Explorer 4000. It's cheap, but it has what I want. I just hope it holds up for my first pack.

just remember that with internal the heavier items should be carried close to the middle right by your back vs external where the heavier stuff goes on top. the Teton looks like a good pack.
