📜 Siege of Vienna: Opening Bombardment - Mehmed IV wanted to live up to, and even surpass, the legacy of his forefather Mehmed II, who had secured the Ottomans' inheritance to the Roman Empire through his conquest of Constantinople. So the current Mehmed decided to target Vienna--but Emperor Leopold dismissed these threats.

still pretty impressive that the ottomans took so much collaboration to take down. Even during their feeble ww1 state they required so many elements including invasions by multiple european nations and their colonies, as well as the arab revolt to take down. After all that one of their pashas pulled a gamer move and just yoinked back all of anatolia and istanbul right after ww1, only to rename the nation and make himself leader.

Something I love about Extra Credits' depiction of wars between empires (aside from WWII) is that they're not described as holy or righteous wars from a single perspective. Most everyone is shown having noble moments of triumph as well as being jackasses trying to take each other's stuff. Religion and spiritual beliefs are undoubtedly important, but it's interesting to see how a state's rulers use them as public justifications to drive personal ambition. Bravo, E.C.. Bravo

I know it's a nitpick, but the holy roman emperor title has been around since the 900's and was swapped between various german states for the most part. The Ottomans claimed to be inheritors of Rome after the taking of Constantinopole. This whole who is the real inheritor of Rome didn't start with Mehmet. As such this is not something that arised a year earlier when the new holy roman emperor was crowned, rather it's just an excuse for the war, rather than a natural progression of events of escalation.

Indeed. When Empress Irene was on the throne in the east, the Pope declared Charlemagne as Emperor. There was even talks of a marriage between the two, to 'unite west and east', though death tragically got in the way of such a union. This was due to a Pope wanting the support of Charlamane in depended his Papel see from attack, and using a title is not exactly a new way to curry favor.

I think what they meant was that the Ottomans had a bone to pick with the Hapsburgs specifically thanks to that title (among other things), because their houses took on the Title of Roman Emperor at roughly the same time and the Ottomans saw their claim as more legitimate.

As far as Western Europe was concerned, the Holy Roman Empire was in fact THE Roman Empire: in-continuity with that empire of the Caesars of antiquity. When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, their empire also became part of the Roman Imperial tradition, at least in theory. In essence, the HRE and the Ottomans were bickering over which empire was the true successor to Rome. 1452 is when Frederick III von Hapsburg ascended to the imperial throne, from which point his dynasty would rule the empire nearly interrupted until its final collapse under the weight of Napoleonic France.

In many ways Vienna actually was a final hold against a growing Muslim empire. To say it wasn’t, is a little disingenuous. Just because it was an important religious battle doesn’t mean that Muslims are bad people, it just means that religion frequently does affect politics and war.

Saying families “jockeyed” to give e their sons to the janissaries is grossly misleading. While it is true there were times, usually during famine or when a family had too many children, that they would “give” their children away to the janissaries this was not the norm. Don’t be mistaken. This was mass kidnapping.
@NewtypeCommander
@NewtypeCommander 2 ай бұрын
Well... initially. Yes, the Janissay Corps was made up of boys taken by the Devşirme (mainly Greeks and Albanians) during the fithteenth and sixthteen centuries, but by about the mid-seventeenth century (when the Siege of Vienna takes place) this method had been abandoned.

I am thinking that this is the time when the Janissary stopped being a purely military unit and became what the Ottomans called "The deep state" (no kidding, the concept actually came from the Ottomans.) 1.It wasn't called Istanbul, Ottomans changed the name of Constantinople to Konstantiniyye when they took it. Istanbul named in 1920s shortly after Republic of Turkey founded. 2.General opinion thinks Ottoman Crown cared their ancestoral roots but in reality Ottomans only carried Turkic traditions in the military. BUT in society things were VERY, VERY different. When Mehmed II took Konstantiniyye and tried to have a more centralized government Turkmen people living in Anatolia revolted to him because that type of Government would take their freedom away and eventually damage their living style, from 1453 Ottoman Crown always in fight with Turks (Turkmens) in Anatolia which because of that Ottoman Army relied more on Janissary type non-Turkic soldiers but trained with Turkic Discipline and tactics...Yeah Akinci, Sipahi and Deli Cavalries were mostly Turkmen Soldiers and higher ranks than the Janissaries (Which this caused problems inside the army between Janissaries and Cavalries in many Festivals and Celebrations usually Janissaries and Sipahis get into large fights) Even for that Turks in Ottoman Society was one of the poorest and seen as how can i say...Low born in Ottoman society because of their revolts against the crown even at one point name of Turk was a insult to another person. Which many Turks including myself who knows history about it hates Osmanoğlu Family (House of Osman rulers of Ottoman Empire) Yeah they carried out Turkic Traditions in the military but they simply killed more Turks than anyone else also made the Empire more Arabic because of Islam (Made Empire more weaker as the society and governing body get more Islamized). WHICH This was one of the reasion new Turkish Republic was a more Turkish Nationalist and had Secular beliefs, because in 18-19 century many Turkish commanders of the Ottoman Army like Enver, Fevzi Çakmak, Mustafa Kemal, İsmet İnönü, Kazım Karabekir etc. Were more Turk Nationalists (Only Enver were the Hardcore one others were defending their Turkic identity but they also respected other nationalities living in Anatolia, meanwhile Enver...Well, you know...) but have disagreements about Ottoman Empire should be Secular or keep its power on Islamic World.

Tolerant to other cultures? Lol the Turks are extremely intolerant towards other cultures, especially the ethnic people of anatolia and East Turkey (the Kurds, Assyrians etc.). The ottomans weren't the problem, nor was the "not being nationalistic enough" vieuws. No, the ottomans were just as racist and nationalistic then the modern Turks. However, their hubris and narcissism caused the downfall of the ottoman empire. They were more busy with religion and were plagued by weak sultans (perhaps because every sultan killed his brothers having a very limited amount of candidates for the throne). Having a kemalist government will not work (we had the past 100 years to see that), however an islamofacist, turk nationalistic leadership like we have now in 2019 won't work either. I suggest a leadership who wishes equality for all, and who better then those who suffered the most (the Kurds). You will know their love and wish for equality to be real because they suffered the most, and only thing the Kurds want is peace and cultural freedom for all. Everyone is free to live.
