fun fact: The lances of the winged Hussars were hollowed out, so that they could be several feet longer due to the lighter weight, giving them a first strike advantage over nearly every cavalry force in Europe when they collided. They were essentially expected to be broken and there would be "refill" carts behind their lines holding extra lances in case they wanted to charge again.

Austria was against the partition. But Russia and Prussia were going to rip out parts of Poland any way and Austria didn't have what it takes to objekt them. So they did what was best for them and took their share. In the end they are just as guilty, however they treated the poles the best by comparison.

I've read somewhere that Kara Mustafa Pasha tried to rally his men with the holy banner and had to be dragged away by his men. It would make sense, since the man REALLY wanted to capture Vienna, for the sake of his adopted family name. Also, Kara Mustafa didn't get executed for failing at Vienna, but for failing to hold Ottoman lands (Which I guess is the result of losing most of his men at Vienna). I think the important distinction is that the Sultan could probably stomach the failed attempt at conquering Vienna, but not the humiliation of losing territory under his reign.

Thank you for covering the Battle of Vienna. I really liked how you presented the battle from the perspectives of both the European alliance and the Ottomans. I found it so interesting that when I watched this episode about the Winged Hussars I was also reading the excellent novel "The Boy Who Wanted Wings" by James Conroyd Martin. It is about the Battle of Vienna from the perspective of a young Tatar man who was orphaned as a baby. He was adopted and raised as one of their own by a loving Polish family. The young man longs to become a Winged Hussar but faces discrimination for being a Tatar, but he fights hard for his dreams. Circumstances put him serving at the battle as the retainer for a Winged Hussar. I thought it interesting how well researched both this episode and the novel are. They went well together. You know what is also an act of irony? That around century later (1772-1795) Austrian Habsburgs took part in the dismembering of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, some gratitude there. Also, the famous wings of the Polish Hussars were most likely one of many Ottoman influences on the PLC, being inspired by the Ottoman "Deli" cavalry units. BTW the notion that those wings were making noise scaring enemy's horses, or had any real function besides looking cool is being contested by modern experts (like Radosław Sikora). Another fun fact; PLC while viewing itself with pride as the "Bulwark of Christianity" (specifically the Catholicism) was also pretty tolerant for that time, not only in regard to other Christian denominations and the large Jewish community but even the relatively small but well established Muslim one - the so-called Lipka Tatars. Who btw traditionally served in the light cavalry, so yes, there were actually some Muslims fighting on the "Christian side" in this battle.

After the collapse of the Golden Horde they immigrated to Poland-Lithuania . Just before the war they rebelled against the commanwealth but Jan was able to convince him to join him (as they greatly respected him) and since then , they were an important part of the polish military and a signifcant componenet in polish society .

Turkish here, although I am familiar with the knowledge given here, I didn't know the fact about Polish Hussars, they never mentioned it in school nor the Sultan's decision to stay in Istanbul. PS : Eventhough I don't have any problem with colors or races, depict Ottomans in black colors if you wish, most of the Turks are caucasian, furthermore, as you have emphasized in your series Janissaries were mostly from Eastern Europe.
