There's a story about Tancred I remember from school years ago. Supposedly during a siege, the enemy had preempted the crusaders by removing and hiding all of the wood in the area, preventing them from building siege towers or lighting fires for their camps. Tancred at the time was said to be suffering from diarrhoea and, while looking for a place to relieve himself, ended up stumbling into a cave to do his business, and ended up finding the hidden wood that had been chopped down.

If anyone thinks this crusade was hard on the Byzantines, you should learn about the Fourth Crusade. Long story short, in 1204 the crusaders sacked and took over Constantinople, establishing the "Latin Empire" in Thrace. The Byzantine Empire was fractured into numerous vassals to the Latin Empire and three independent successors to Byzantium: the Despotate of Epirus (in Albania), and the Empires of Nicaea and Trebizond (both in Anatolia). The Latin Empire was eventually destroyed and the Nicaeans retook Constantinople, but the Empire had been dealt a massive blow. P.S. The two famous columns outside the Doge's palace in Venice were actually looted from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade.

Seb Seirow I'm American, and I would not know about it probably except a Spaniard friend of mine gave me a book about it. Most everyone I've asked has heard the saying "kill them all, God will know his own" but has no idea where it was supposed to have come from. I even studied the Crusades a lot in order to gain a better understanding of Christianity and Islam and their interactions. It's just so undertaught, that outside of maybe France, there has to be a tiny percent of the population that have ever heard about it at all, not to mention the Teutonic Order.
@sebseirow79559 жыл бұрын
Tank 1900 Not really a surprise since it wasn't a "glorious" crusade and more of a masacre of "heretic" who didn't follow the pope. And the only reason our king follow it was to secure the land for the crown. Let's not forget that this crusade set the fondation for the inquisition to track down the remaining cathar. So aside for France and Spain (the two main country to fight) i don't thing anyone care about it unfortunately.

Robert of Normandy was the son of William the Conqueror, and Stephen of Blois was Robert's brother-in-law, as he had married his sister Adela. Even if Robert was the eldest son of William the Conqueror, he didn't become King of England because he quarrelled so much with his father. The dukedom of Normandy was his birthright, but England was newly acquired land, so it was freely disposable inheritance, and William the Conqueror made his 3rd son(His second son, Richard had died in a hunting accident), William Rufus the King of England at his death. Robert of Normandy pawned his dukedom to his brother William to go on crusade. Robert of Flanders was cousin to Robert of Normandy, as his Aunt was Matilda of Flanders, wife to William the Conqueror.

It's even worse if you believe the chronicles as to why Robert was such a headcase. The first time Robert stirred up trouble against his father was due to a prank: his younger brothers William Rufus and Henry supposedly dumped a full chamber pot (before flush toilets, that was where human excrement went) onto his head. Cause William did nothing asides break up the brawl among the brothers, Robert saw it as a slight to his dignity. Yeah, wars over the most pettiest of reasons date back to the 11th century at the very least.

Oath swearing seems so weird from a modern perspective. Nowadays leaders would swear anything and then do what they wanted anyways

GreyWolfLeaderTW Well, why do they constantly try then?

+2MeterLP Mostly its an honour thing. If you make an oath and then break it then it gives legitimacy to whatever consequences people want to enact upon you afterward, provided of course you have the power and influence to make good on your threat of vengeance. It's basically a way nobles say to each other "Betray me and I'll make you pay for it" but in a more diplomatic sense. It's primarily a diplomatic tool, you can use the fact that somebody broke an oath as a means of discrediting them and turning others against them. Even the most untrustworthy noble knows that the value of loyalty in their own subjects, so while it's generally accepted that people schemed and betrayed one another, they're usually very cautious to make sure that they're not on the receiving end of it. Which is what makes an oath potentially a powerful tool albeit one that's flimsy at best. Yeah it's effectively just saying "I promise I wont be a dick to you and your country" but break too many oaths and get too much of a reputation for being an oathbreaker and you'll probably not find many people willing to keep working with you. Alternatively you can just become so powerful that nobody has a choice in whether to work with you or not, but that's a difficult thing for most people to acquire... there's usually somebody more powerful... and when you're the biggest fish in the pond it just makes everybody else that much more willing to screw you over. The people asking others to make oaths are generally those more powerful trying to tie the hands of those less powerful, because there's an understanding there that the consequences can actually manifest. Alternatively in the case of a less powerful lord asking a more powerful one (Or equally powerful) for an oath, the smart ones will usually also throw something more tangible into the mix, such as political hostages (Very popular at the time) with the threat of injuring or even killing them should the oath be broken, or having offerings of gold or other bribes should a person fulfil the terms of their oath successfully.

Does anyone else feel like more of this stuff should be included in the Total War franchise and similar games? "Hey! Can you come over here and help me fight?" "Sure! Oh, wait, just let me pillage this town for supplies so my troops are fully equipped at the front line." "Those are my towns you arse wipe!" "Can't hear you! Pillaging my enemies!"

Christian Weibrecht Mostly because in fiction, most characters aren't total raving lunatics who don't seem to know how to act rationally, and in fiction most soldiers obey and don't randomly pillage everything in sight.

Notice for those interested: Robert of Normandy was the eldest son of William the Conqueror, and fought his brothers William (before the Crusade) and Henry (after the Crusade) for the throne of England. Steven of Blois was the great nephew (90% sure that's the name) of William. He will go on to become King of England when Henry dies, and fight his cousin Empress Matilda and her husband Geoffrey Plantagenet for the throne during The Anarchy. Their son Henry will become his heir, Henry II, and father of Richard the Lionheart.
