Hi Marubeny, I don't use fixative to spray the paintings. I paint onto sandpaper (Fisher 400 Artpaper) which means that the pastel is more stable and does not get damaged so easily.

Hi MrDeano, The tool I use for blending detail is a Colour Shaper, flat chisel, I use no 6 and no 2. They are silicone tipped tools. They work better than tortillons as they just move the colour around rather than removing it. and the shape is ideal for creating sharp edges.

Beautiful talent! New to pastels and I am wondering how to protect it once I am finished so I can frame it and questionably sell it. Please let me know where I could find that information. Do you have books on beginners to completion?.🙏🏼

Hello James, when your painting is finished, leave it on the board and make sure any loose flakes of pastel or dust are dislodged before framing it by holding the painting vertical and tapping it quite sharply on a table. Then store it flat between a folded sheet of newspaper, fold over a flap of newspaper and tape it down to stop any lateral movements. When you are ready to frame it or get it framed, use a double mount to create a gap between the painting and the glass. I use sandpaper, Fisher 400 art paper is my favourite but there are others made by Uart and Canson Mi Tiente touch is good too. I also like Claire Fontaine pastelmat. All these are great for holding the pastel well. I don’t like using fixative as it dulls the colours. I do have a book with lots of information, and stage by stage demonstrations. It is called Start to Paint with Pastels, published by Search Press. Have a look at our website for tips as well.. www.davidbellamy.co.uk.

Superbe ! J'admire votre travail avec le pastel. Je n'arrive pas à "fondre" aussi bien les miens. Je ne sais pas si cela vient du papier ou des craies ? Peut-on connaître les vôtres ? Merci et encore bravo ! Amicalement

How do you get such a sharp point on your pencil ?
@JennyKeal
@JennyKeal 8 жыл бұрын
+Denise Shaw Hi Denise, I am planning putting up a short video on this in the next month or so. In the meantime:_ I usually sharpen my pastel pencils with a craft knife, the Olfa ones are the best. I start by gently removing the wood, easing the knife away from the core to prevent breakages and then when I've done that all the way round I using delicate strokes on the core turning the pencil as I go until I have a needle sharp point. Alternatively I like the KUM long point sharpeners which work very well as long as the pastel pencil is not too soft. Carb Othello and Cretacolour are my favourite. The desktop type of sharpener, usually electric, are too aggressive. You can maintain the points with sand paper but you still need to expose the core and get it to a reasonable point first.. Hope that helps.

Thank You ..Iv been using a craft knife just like you said..however cant seem to get much of the core showing !

+Denise Shaw The blade needs to be really sharp and you need to control the pressure with both your thumbs . I.e. Hold the pencil in your left hand (if you are right handed) and the knife in your right, put your left thumb over your right thumb near the spot where the blade comes out, and using the two thumbs to control the pressure cut down into the wood and then curve the blade up as you reach the core so you don't snap the core off. It's a bit like wood carving, just taking a sliver off at a time turning the pencil in your left hand as you go to keep the tip symmetrical. I'll get this video done as soon as I can. I've had a look for other you tube videos to see if there is something already on here but no one does it the same as I do.
