Extraordinary Jewish Women
The Legal Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg with Leora Harpaz
This installment of ou Sisterhood's Extradordinary Jewish Women series was led by Constitutional Law Professor Leora Harpaz who spoke about the legal career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, beginning with her advocacy before the Supreme Court in a series of cases challenging sex discrimination and then going on to consider her opinions after she became a Supreme Court Justice. Those cases range from her opinion for the Court invalidating the Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy to her more recent dissents in which she disagreed with decisions creating broad religious exemptions from the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive coverage for women employees, weakening the Voting Rights Act, and permitting the government to erect a large cross as a war memorial. In speaking about her dissents, Ginsburg said, “I like to think most of my dissents will be the law someday.” Professor Leora Harpaz has taught constitutional law to law students, college students, and senior learners.
