Can 4K be better than 8K? - LG OLED C9 vs Samsung QLED Q950R

Following the video where we discuss if it’s possible to see 8K with our eyes… we’re now wondering if 4K can actually look better than 8K… with surprising results!
Are we 8K ready? - • Are we 8K ready?
Obviously, the only fair way to test this is with a totally ‘blind’ test, where our judges don’t even know why we’re doing a test or what the differences between these flagship Smart TVs are.
LG OLED C9 vs Samsung QLED Q950R, both 65 inch screens, with our judges sitting the ideal 50 degrees away from the width of each TV.
**** ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS ****
Sorry for the impersonal response… after answering over 2K comments of basically the same five questions, I find I can’t keep up with re-writing the same answers! However, please don’t think your comment isn’t appreciated - it genuinely is!
1) All of the content from 9:15 onwards was native 8K on the QLED and native 4K on the OLED all downsampled from content originally captured at 12K
2) No, as stated in the video, the TVs were not professionally calibrated before the test. They were tested in their default ‘user’ settings as straight out of the box. The only change was to turn off motion interpolation on the QLED as this defaults to OFF on the OLED. (Plus we all hate the soap opera effect) Calibration does not effect Contrast Modulation, (especially with a black & white still chart)… which is the primary reason the guys couldn’t spot the 8K. Most users do not get their TVs professionally calibrated.
3) The size of screen is only relevant if you are going to view the TV very close up! What’s the visible difference between sitting 4 meters away from an 80 inch screen or 2 meters away from a 40 inch? There is none… the most important figure is pixel density per arc-minute. (ie. how far away you sit related to the width of screen). There are recommended charts for home cinema - we used the THX ones.
4) Many people seem to think you shouldn’t compare QLED with OLED… and I do understand why… but does that mean we can’t compare QLED with anything else - even just for resolution? I would like to perform the same test again with an 8K OLED and a 4K OLED… as soon as possible, but it might have to wait until the 8K OLEDs come down to less than the price of a small car! Now we know you can’t see the pixels on an 8K QLED, I don’t see the point in testing against a 4K QLED… the 4K can only be better! (I love the Q90R by the way)
5) Lots of people seem to think this video is just comparing picture quality between the two TVs… that wasn’t the intention, and in many ways, I regret not cutting everything from before Steve and Mark were trying to spot the 8K. To be fair, the guys said both TVs showed great pictures and it would be very difficult to tell them apart if they weren’t in the same room.
The point where this video changed course was when I realised the guys couldn’t spot the 8K… even close up! I was not expecting that, and the end of the video is my explanation of exactly how that can happen. The close up shots of each panel are with my own macro lens placed against the screen with the same magnification on both.

So many people have asked about having 8K content on the 8K screen it's clear I didn't explain it very well in the video, so just to confirm.... we played a mixture of native 4K content to both screens from Netflix and some native 8K content to the 8K screen from downloaded 8K and 12K originals. These were coded as H.265 and VP90 files and copied on to two USB sticks for playing to both screens simultaneously. Not all the 8K demos were used in the video for copyright reasons. Half of the blind test you see (from 9:15 onwards) was all native 8K content on the 8K and simultaneous native 4K on the 4K.

@vann tedd You seem to be confusing colour accuracy (bit depth) with resolution? I totally agree that higher resolution displays may have a use with still images, CGI, close up work, and even gaming monitors (if the frame rates are high enough)... but the whole point of the last two videos about 8K is that it's totally pointless for watching movies at normal viewing distances. There is no comparison with the move from HD to 4K because our eyes can resolve more detail than HD when looking at these screens. If you can't see the pixels at 4K... 8K won't look any better, even with water or reflections! You should watch my other video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJfUYo2ol5Z_aac

@@extrashot michaelbach.de/ot/lum-hyperacuity/index.html You can see pixel densities far higher than any current 8K display. The 60 Pixels Per Degree limitation is mostly a myth. It's true that consistent patterns of high density lines will blur out at 60 Pixels Per Degree, anyone can test it for themselves, but inconsistent low density detail is perceived very differently and you can perceive detail up to 10x more precisely when your photo-receptor system isn't overwhelmed. The long and the short of it is high contrast detail can use far more than 8K resolution at normal viewing distances, it's only very fine texture patterns that become imperceptible beyond 60 Pixels Per Degree.

The new Samsung s20 is 8k and can takes 8k movies. 8k is moving faster than 4k and all the tvs at ecs 20 all 8k. Samsung have dumped 4k as in another year all 8k. LG are accually screwed as they dont have an 8k tv to match the price point of the qled 4k will become cheaper

Thanks for the review. I switched from Samsung QLED and got an LG CX 65'. Damn it's so beautiful. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is breathtaking with the space / stars scenes with each individual pixel self-lit or turned off, no blooming around subtitles etc. I'm pissed that I fell for Samsung's marketing, but better late than never. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is also an awesome experience.

The moral of the story is this. No matter if it's called 1080P, 4K or 8K, if you rely on a backlight, your tv will never look as good as an OLED.
@edumeli02
@edumeli02 4 жыл бұрын
OLED looks absolutely great, but it has its flaws. It's not because LG or whoever makes them is bad at producing them. It's just the technology isn't ready yet. They "promise" you it won't suffer from burn-in or other problems, but the reality is that today OLEDs will eventually become worse and worse over the time, the colors will look washed out and, again, may suffer from burn-in. I'm planning to buy a Samsung QLED not because it looks better, but because it's a more reliable technology. Oh, did I mention that white reproduction in OLEDs looks absolutely rubbish

@johnbruce4003 3 жыл бұрын
Rattamatt396 To each their own I guess. I know people who think sound quality is #1 for a tv. You say peak brightness, some say color. For me it's black level, which explains that when the Pioneer Kuro came out in 2007 it stomped all over the competition. It's nearly impossible to believe that they put out a plasma tv in 2009 (their last) that still holds up over 10 years later to the best panels made.

For 7 ft viewing distance, you need about 200" screen for 8K to make any sense. Of course, not many are ready to pay to price for such a thing. And even if you had such a screen, you'd still have mostly 720p or 1080p content. Check out production details of new movies - for example, the Frozen 2 that was released around a month ago was 2K production. They don't have anything better to offer. However, if you look how successful it was, the chances are, others studios may end up doing mostly 2, too. (After saying that, Frozen 2 is a computer animation and as such, they can increase the resolution by re-rendering the whole movie in the future.)

I ended up going with a 65inch lg c9. I definitely thought alot about getting an 8k but I'd have to get a much larger screen size to see the difference and that sharpness at that size wouldnt make up for the infinite contrast on the oled. To me I think of HD, 4K, and 8K resolutions in terms of size and viewing distance. As bigger TVs became the norm, 4K became necessary for 65 / 75 / 80 +inch TVs. You can only stretch HD so far before you lose detail at certain viewing distances. To me 8K may be more appropriate for TVs 85” and above, but it’s also dependent on how far you sit from it on whether you can perceive certain levels of detail. Generally the bigger the TV the more resolution necessary to retain a certain level of detail.
@extrashot
@extrashot 5 жыл бұрын
True... but then the whole point I was making in the original video was that it's generally accepted (by smarter people than me) that the ideal viewing distance to any screen is one that gives you a 50 degree angle to the width of that screen. Apparently, this distance will give that optimum cinematic experience we all crave, and most cinemas place the centre of the seating at around this point. It shouldn't matter how big the screen is unless you are going to sit closer than the 50 degrees. My big shock was when the judges couldn't tell which screen was 8K even with their eyes pressed right up close!

@extrashot
@extrashot 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean... but if we're only looking to see the pixels and not picture quality, should the tech matter? Are we saying we can’t compare QLED with anything else... even just for resolution using a black and white test pattern? In many ways, I regret not cutting everything from before Steve and Mark were trying to spot the 8K... because lots of people seem to think this video is just comparing picture quality between the two TVs, which wasn’t the intention. To be fair, the guys did say both TVs showed great pictures and it would be very difficult to tell them apart if they weren’t in the same room. The point where this video changed course was when I realised the guys couldn’t spot the 8K… even close up! I was not expecting that, and the end of the video is my explanation of exactly how that can happen. The close up shots of each panel are with my own macro lens placed against the screen with the same magnification on both.
@jeffhirata

Excellent video. Well done! I’m thinking that to really see the difference in 8k, a much larger screen would be needed.
@extrashot
@extrashot 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind comment. You're right, the size of the screen will help you see 8K, but it's actually irrelevant unless you also take into account the viewing distance! The size of screen is only a factor if you’re going to pixel peep much closer than normal viewing distances. For instance... what’s the visible difference between sitting 4 meters away from a 100 inch screen or 2 meters away from a 50 inch? There is none… the most important figure is pixel density per arc-minute. (ie. how far away you sit related to the width of screen in degrees). There are recommended charts for home cinema - we used the THX ones.

Oled is always the superior technology. But I would definitely go for the Qled just to avoid the burn-in issue, which will affect the LG no matter what you do or how you treat it. And I can not for the life of me tolerate burned images on my TV.

I really really love my oled TV. I dont have LG paid me to say this(I have LG too..) Gaming, movies, series, youtube, netflix name it and you get a good picture, no input lag, high refresh rate, good contrast. The sony oled is good too but more expensive and still all oled panels are made by LG. LG also has a good software called WEBOS: good support with all apps, even disney launched directly on LG and not on samsung.. The samsungs are not bad, but all OLED TV's do provide the best picture overall..

@@extrashot Well, it has been 2 weeks since delivery and installation of my OLED65GXLA. I am glad I went the extra over the CX in terms of the slim form factor. I even wall-mounted it myself and it is great. It fits so flush to the wall. The performance is amazing (especially those blacks you mention!) and I have taken to re-watching old classics as they really come alive whatever the distance we were wathing the screen at. The ARC/eARC connection works seamlessly with my Denon home cinema and was pretty simple. One HDMI cable and that was it. Great piece of technology. Glad i found this full and informative review. Thank you! Please keep up the good work.

And that made this double-blind possibly "the. best. ever." - top quality participants and top presentation. Also your voice had me hanging on every word. A very special voice. OLED today is the equivalent of Plasma back in the day, superior quality at a premium price, even when compared to higher resolution panels, it offers higher contrast in the darker areas, even if the peak brightness is lower, allowing for a much more detailed, realistic, and true to life image

I do think we've hit that wall where beyond 4k you have seriously diminishing returns. Now of course if youre rich and can afford say an 85" tv theres going to be a difference, but is the mainstream entertainment industry going to cater to those few people? Id like to see us not bother beyond 4k and instead focus on improving picture quality in other ways as much as we can.
@extrashot
@extrashot 5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree.... definitely demising returns... but this is being driven by people selling TVs, not the entertainment industry. There's stuff like true HDR and downsampling that's much more useful for improving picture quality..

@@Dave23547 Even at normal TV viewing distances... I can definitely see the difference between HD and 4K. The problem is... what sort of process are you getting if it's impossible to see it? You're moving a lot of data around for no good reason, especially as this progress is often at the cost of other improvements you could make to the display... like refresh time etc. When do you think we should stop... 32K, 64K ?
@garethlloyd1445
@garethlloyd1445 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Going 8k is like putting on go faster stripes. The tv industry is seriously running out of ideas. (tv's went silver once) They have become to need to be selling TV to each consumer earlier so instead of our tv's lasting 10years or more like they used to do in the crtv days, they want us to be buying a new TV every 5 years or even less. Trying to change the technology to give reasons why we need a new upgrade when we don't, they are not mobile phones. Forget extra resolution we can't see, try and give us a smooth picture as a crtv has better motion flow than any lcd/led or oled. I think it was digital foundry that got our latest games and ran than through an old Sony crtv and the motion was way clearer than a top oled. Sort that out manufacturers
