We just went through this same research and decision. For our family room we went with the Samsung 65" Q80R, not the LG OLED we were also seriously considering (we have been buying LG TVs for 25 years too). This review unfortunately really only showed the biggest drawback with QLED. It didn't talk about the fact that QLED is much brighter for example and this is critical if the room has a large window you don't want to block. When we installed the same priced ($1500) LG OLED in our family room it wasn't bright enough to be viewed without closing the large screen door's vertical blinds. The Samsung QLED on the other hand produces fantastic image quality in the very bright room and didn't even need to use the brightest settings. Also the color reproduction and detail was slightly better on QLED out of the box (although likely with a bit of tuning probably not an issue on the OLED). The issue demonstrated in the review only looks like this on our Q80R with local dimming set to high, which is also the case if dynamic viewing mode or demo mode is enabled. Using "standard" mode this issue goes away and results in reasonably bright stars. The background isn't 100% pitch black but it is still very black. Our Q80R actually came from the factory in "standard" viewing mode where the local dimming is set to low by default. "Dynamic" mode does look good with its extreme brightness combined with pitch black blacks but we prefer to use "standard" mode and be able to see stars in sci-fi movies like Star Wars. Burn in on OLED is a real problem, especially if used at the highest brightness levels. All of the store demo OLED TVs show burn in with them, even after less than 1 month of use (if you look closely). QLED on the other hand doesn't suffer from burn in at all and all of the QLED demo units still produced fantastic images after more than 6 months of 12 hour days of use. Ultimately our decision was the following: 1. For a dedicated home theater with no windows (or at least minimal stray light) and where you only use the tv for watching moving images like movies, I would go with a fairly high end OLED. The superior dark performance makes it worth it. 2. For our family room where there is a lot of bright stray light entering the room much of the time and the tv is often left on with a movie paused or with a selection menu on the screen for many hours brightness and durability is essential. For this the QLED is really the only practical option with its incredible brightness and rock solid durability. After using it almost constantly for about 3 monthse are extremely happy with our choice.

+Slider68 Dude, you should have just gone with the OLED, and LG has put in measures to prevent the burn-in, didn't you see the video? By the way, why would Samsung name their tv Q"LED" when it's not even LED, because they know that LED is more superior and it's what most people are looking for these days. You just made a bad purchase and now you're trying to write this huge comment to prove to yourself and pretend that you made a good purchase. And most standard living rooms will be able to handle the OLED tv, even with a big window, you will get a glare on the LCD TVs as well, it's not like LCD is glare proof, both technologies are made of glass, which will get glare.

They might. Because he did not color-calibrate the TVs to match their brightness, saturation and contrast identically. What a scam video this is. He literally says "both TVs are on their standard color settings" . Anyone who reviews technology and home cinema equipment knows that this is such a bullshit way to compare anything, since all technology comes with wildly different color presets. Some go for "pop" and others go for realism. An honest video would use a colorimeter and balance the TVs and THEN see if there is any inherent difference, which is what EVERY serious home theater "videophile" magazine does. What he did instead was just lazily and incorrectly compare the default presets of the TVs, which is worthless information. It is as if I took TWO IDENTICAL LG TVs and set one to 100% SATURATION and asked you "which one is more Saturated? Pick the winner!"... It is just a completely worthless comparison unless you calibrate both screens identically. Sigh. I am a big fan of Jerry but this video sucks ass. If you actually calibrated both screens, I would bet you that the starfield would get a black background on the QLED too. Furthermore, the starfield is THE most dishonest way to compare the screens, because a starfield is a black area dotted with bright pure-white pixels, which means the backlight has to turn on for the entire screen, and that is not a realistic scenario. In most movies, black is pitch black and is not dotted with stars, and you would not see any difference in light levels since the entire backlight would be turned off for both TVs. Anyway, for what it is worth, he is also totally wrong about QLED and how it works. Samsung created QLED because they did not want to get into OLED manufacturing since there are massive issues with burn-in for that technology. So they created self-dimming pixels. There is a filter on the screen which can totally dim individual pixels. The Q Stands for Quantum Dot Display, which is that grid. They use region-lighting LEDs in the back, and that filter in the front to block out the remaining light. As a result, they get extremely close to OLED black levels, while having a screen that is amazingly OVER 30 TIMES BRIGHTER (meaning the QLED TV is actually viewable in direct sunlight). And the QLED screen is guaranteed to far outlive any OLED which will burn out and dim after a few years as proven by the RTINGS testing institute in their years-long OLED testing. I would purchase a QLED for all of these reasons. But the core issue of this video remains: Neither screen is calibrated so there is no comparison at all. Just two wildly different default presets. Which is worthless information. This video is literally, in the literal sense, useless... And yes I get mad when useless information gets passed off as facts. In a video sponsored by one of the TVs. Which just happened to win. It is irresponsible, slanted and dishonest. I thought Jerry was better than this. Maybe he is just not knowledgeable about TVs? The video certainly gives that impression. In that case I can forgive him. But I also think he has a responsibility to educate himself when doing sponsored advertisements to a big audience like this.
@brycehollandsworth71753 жыл бұрын
One of the key differences between QLED and OLED is price point. Dollar for dollar, QLED gives you an outstanding viewing experience that I personally feel punches above its weight class. There's no doubt imo that OLED is the superior picture, but QLED closes the gap enough at a cost-effective range to give less affluent consumers a genuinely stunning 4K experie ce.

I worked for Japanese manufacturers selling pro-grade high end HDR monitors for the film, TV and video game markets. There was a very popular OLED HDR monitor for colour grading films that was quite beautiful looking with 1000 nits of brightness and full HDR10 and Dolby Vision rating. I was selling a competitive LCD model that was 1200 nits. The OLED models were initially popular because the image was very striking. The black levels were undeniably great so the contrast looked amazing. The LCD models were better at colour accuracy but less impressive with black levels. The tie breaker actually came with time. The OLED monitors had a hard time with colour accuracy as previously mentioned but the black levels started to drift over time also. Consistency is key when colour grading and colour grading a project on OLED turned out to be troublesome. They would work on a project, take it to a screening room with a projector and it would look completely different. Simply put. OLED ages as it is an organic material. If you like to keep your TVs for a decently long time, go LCD. Like Zack said, LED is just the lighting, it’s still an LCD TV.

A CCFL LCD TV would not have these issues as well. Those are super reliable on the long term. They only do FullHD, but that is ok for me. My genre of movies, arthouse, is never in 4K on BluRay/streaming. Black levels are amazing too, I've never seen as even backlit screens as old CCFL ones. Black is a very nice ultra dark gray from corner to corner, yet the coating is of a nice semi-matte anti glare quality no TV has today, so the blacks apear very solid even in bright lit rooms.

I live in miami and if you need to watch tv in the day time with an OLED and cant close the curtains, you might as well not watch it at all. The glare of an OLED TV is almost like a mirror in certain scenarios. Though OLED has its perks (deeper blacks and colors), i can watch a dark movie in daylight and still be able to differentiate within the scene due to the higher peak brightness. Its all a matter of preference right now not which is better, your eyes cant differentiate between microscopic pixels and personally if you rewatch the waterfall segment it looks much better and detailed in the QLED TV.

@@CrazedBuffoon I am thinking the same thing when buying. About 7 or 8 years ago I bought a plasma for its superior image quality and p/p on purchase. But it has a glossy screen and it burns in if i play GTA for too long and there is the map constantly. It fades away eventually, but still. Its picture is, however, ridiculously good. But for the most part, I just regret not buying an LCD back then... Simply for convenience. In my student apartment I have a 32" LCD tv. The picture quality is nothing to write home about, but it is good enough and i never think while watching a movie that the picture should be better.... I do however appreciate all the time that i can watch in any room at any time of the day.

I've had the LG OLED for almost 2 years now and hands down its the best TV I've ever had. Granted, I upgraded from a much older 1080p LCD. The burn in issue is real so be cautious. I was heavily using the display for about 3-4 months where the windows taskbar was present. Red colors from the chrome logo, and the windows store logo are burned into the bottom now. Its almost never an issue unless you are watching 16:9 content with solid bright colors. I just ended up hiding the taskbar and getting used to that. Overall, I'd say even with the risk of burn in, this TV has been the best entertainment experience I've ever had and well worth the money!

QLED is a marketing move from Samsung, QLED and OLED sound similar (thats what the marketing move was for) but have NOTHING in common. Many people, including my brother, thought/think that QLED is as good as OLED because the names are nearly the same. He went out and bought a QLED. QLEDs are REGULAR LCD Panels with the only difference that they are „powered“ by „Quantum Dot“ Leds. QLED TVs come in with the same positive and negative aspects as LCD/LED TVs. I hope one day that all ppl will get this.

My living room is attached to a sunroom so brightness is important to me. i have the ks8000 and i will admit it's not made for HDR contents to be watch during the day, but at night it's ok. The ks8000 look better during the day than any other oled tv i owned at that time. I don't even watch a lot of hdr contents so i saved my money by returning the oled tv.

Jerry: Be thankful it was your wrist, not your leg, ribs, or cranium. At 66, I no longer go up on the roof; it is just not worth it, but then again, I've fallen on terra firma, tripping and jammed my elbow into my ribs, cracking a few. Caution pays. Now, on to the business. First, thanks for all the content you have shared with your lovely wife over the years. It is so inspirational and informative. I loved the Chevy electric truck review, which I had been waiting for over two years, especially because of the folding cab bulkhead feature to extend the bed. The Rivian is beautiful, but I need a bigger bed, and Chevy has set the standard, not even considering the mileage. I have a question about the OLED vs. QLED. For most of the shared scenes, the OLED looked better, especially the space shots, but there were a few times when you showed the waterfall scenes around the 6:07 minute mark, and the QLED looked a little better/sharper/more realistic and vibrant. Is this my imagination? Please give me your perspective when you have the chance.

Here’s why I’m getting a led... I want an 82” or 85” tv. Sony, Samsung, and LG sell led tv’s that size for $3500 or less. Oled tv’s are much more expensive, especially when you are looking for something over 75”.

18 months ago, I replaced my 58 inch, premium, A-brand IPS LCD/LED tv with a 65 inch OLED from the same manufacturer. The improvement in picture quality, was stunning. Mainly down to contrast ratio and low light detail. My one regret, I wish I had bought bigger. That A-brand manufacturer does a 77 inch OLED! Then I started noticing rave reviews of a 98 inch QLED from a highly competitive and relative newcomer to the tv market. The 98 inch QLED retailed for less than the 77 inch OLED from that A-brand manufacturer. So, I threw caution to the wind and purchased the 98 inch QLED. So, until the 65 inch OLED was relocated to the bedroom, I had ample opportunity to make a side by side comparison. Seriously, I can’t honestly say that one is better than the other. They both have their virtues and their caveats. The QLED trumps the OLED on brightness whilst the OLED wins on displaying fine detail. Whilst the colours are more rich or saturated, so pop out more on the OLED, they are softer, more subtle more natural looking on the QLED and I think I prefer that. The audio reproduction on the OLED is above average for a slim panel tv, whilst the audio reproduction om the QLED is superb, negating the need for a soundbar. I guess that the massive chassis of that 98 inch QLED allows the manufacturer the freedom to employ more substantial speakers. Most of my family and friends say that the QLED is more impressive than the OLED. I guess they’re influenced by superior brightness and sheer screen real estate. ‘Size does matter’!!! The point is, that tv screen technology has advanced so rapidly in recent times, that whatever your budget, any new tv, won’t disappoint. If you purchase a less expensive tv, without a side by side comparison, I doubt you’d be aware of its weaknesses. guess

And once you've had a couple get burn in you will be desperately searching the OLED dominated market for alternatives ! I see Zach is optimistic about the burn in mitigation techniques but I bought that line since the galaxy S2 and with each successive generation and am now resigned to the fact its an inescapable part of the screen tech. Even if you flipped your phones orientation constantly to avoid logo and keyboard persistence the panel itself would become more broadly discoloured. It kind of disgusts me that we are all so in on a tech thats gonna consign so many TVs to bins rather than the second hand market and of course phones,tablets and smart watches as well. Goodbye to the days of people revamping old handheld gaming devices and other tech because of LCD being generally like a tank.

@@etherspin I've had quite a few phones with OLED, only one had burnin. it was a Siemens phone back in the early 2000, so i think it depends on how they are treated, both by user and by software.

I have two old Panasonic 55 inch OLED TVs. To prevent burn in; First 100 hours of use, no gaming/no TV logos. I played full screen movies / DVD videos with no logos. Second, 100 to 1000 hours, no more than 2 hours of gaming/TV logos per day. Checked for image retention each day & watched hours of full screen video (no logos) each day. Third, after 1000 hours with no burn in, the TV could play games/TV logos normally but I’d still play movies/TV (no logos) to balance things out. ** I would do the same routine w/ a new LG OLED TV.
