A little help from me who has been burning wood for 50 years. 4:22 There is a small steering wheel on the door. It is the secondary air to the wood. Here comes a little extra oxygen to there will be more powerful combustion. It should be open one and a half turns approximately. (Adjusted for smoke from the chimney.) The hatch with the chain is the primary air into the wood. It is set with the chain. When the water in the boiler gets hot, the door closes slowly. But it must not be closed completely. If it is closed, the wood can Mila as it is called in Swedish (just glow). Then soot is formed! Remember, wood needs oxygen. Before the boiler and chimney are warm so not enough oxygen flows into the wood boiler. Dirty smoke = too little oxygen! 5:03 The damper to the chimney. The damper must be open max during firing. 7:50 Soot smoke. The smoke should be gray for the first 15-30 minutes. If you burn properly, you will burn everything in the wood except what becomes ash (that is, what does not burn). Slightly oxygen and you get the smoke that is visible in the video. The primary door on old wood boilers is too small to let in enough oxygen if you use too much wood when you light the wood boiler. The weather affects the chimney. If it has been cold weather and the weather gets hot, a "plug" will form in the chimney. Then you have to fire with tensioned wood to get the air to go from the wood boiler and up through the chimney. Deciduous trees especially birch form tar in the chimney. It's dangerous. It can cause a chimney fire. If you only fire with birch, you must have a lot of oxygen. There is another way, mix with conifers. Or buy "Avsotningsmedel" Talk to the chimney sweep about it. When the boiler burns perfectly in balance, it does not smoke. This type of wood boiler disappeared as early as the early 1980s. It was replaced by a top-loading boiler with reverse combustion. The boilers are clad with ceramics inside.
@dvogonen3 жыл бұрын
I guess you know this already, but here goes: If you want the fire to last longer you should not split the wood so much. Unsplit wood lasts a lot longer than split wood. Use split wood to get the heat up and then load as large wood pieces as possible, preferably unsplit. With the size of your house and your burner, you should definitely not need to feed the fire hourly.
@kimmurphy68643 жыл бұрын
True and it depends on the kind of wood you use. Pine type wood burns up real fast. You need hard wood.
@anderspersson70843 жыл бұрын
@@kimmurphy6864 Birch is the best in The Nordic countries, it have the biggest value of heat energy, and if you dry it it's best the second year, cut it down in the winter when trees contain much less water, take it home store it outside untill late spring when you cut it in shorter pieces and split the thicker ones, this is the driest weather period untill midsummer so let it stay outside to dry and take it under a roof right before midsummer, it's good enough the to use the first winter but even better stored one extra year, but as said before use unsplit firewood so it's not necessary to feed the fire every hour, and with a nice masonry chimney keeping the heat half a day or more, if the house is winter worthy insulation keept in an standard worth the climate, the floor is very important that it's having a good insulation, the attic an walls insulated are also important but a bad floor is hellish the coldest of days because it doesn't heat up when heating up as the rest of the room does, it can therefore be icecold while the rest of the room is hot as h*ll, that insulation standard counts only for the ground level floor though and if there is a basement under it it's not a problem either.

Good idea
@xpost93813 жыл бұрын
Well, that does also mean that the burning process happens at a lower temperature and are very ineffective, hence creating much more pollution and more soot called PAH (Polyaromatic hydrocarbone). That goes straight out in the free air. It causes worse pollution than car traffic - for example. In neighbourhoods it creats a very bad air quality that makes it difficult to bread specially for people with respiratorical related problems ... like astma. Exposure over longer time with these carsinogen soot particles can cause development of cancer. Later years has ovens / stoves for wood burning been developed specifically with the above mentioned problem in mind, so they are now more effective and burn with higher temperature. What you are doing is not helpful at all in these regards. If you want to save/store heat you must do that in a specific storeage of stone, water or some salt solutions. So that kind of wood burning is not a good idea ... both for people and the environment.
@dvogonen3 жыл бұрын
@@xpost9381No, the wood burning process will not happen at a lower temperature, as long as the air supply is not choked. The temperature of a wood burner with a high heat retention capacity will stay pretty much the same when it has reached it active temperature. Adding more wood with exposes surfaces simply leads to the flammable gases released from the wood escaping quicker. This produces large volumes of heated air that are driven past the heat recipients faster than they are designed for and straight out through the chimney. Very wasteful, inefficient and unenvironmental. Newer burners are indeed better than older, but a burner switch is not really an option here. The best way of achieving an efficient, low pollution fire is to heat the burner as quickly as possible and then let it burn at a steady continuous rate. This is why you want to use wood that steadily emits gases over time. Not wood that burns violently for a short time.

The night at winter in northern Sweden kind of make people being like bears. They kind of go into themselves and isolate. But then the fun part comes - summer. It's daylight 24 hours a day! It's a strange life, and it needs some time to get used to...not everyone has the mentality for it. If I would live in northern Sweden I would choose a compromise place, like the area around Sundsvall. There are fantastic beautiful sceneries around there around the rivers Indalsälven and Ljungan, so if you seek the solitude and nature you can get it, but at the same time it would be close to a major city when you need that.

A little help from me who has been burning wood for 50 years Part II You have put tension wood in the boiler. (You can use some lighter fluid it's totally Ok. Also some diesel is OK. Diesel ignites at + 60 ° C so you can have it in a small 5 liter plastic can in the boiler room) When the wood boiler gets hot, vaccum is formed in the chimney and in the wood boiler. The more vaccum, the better it burns. Now for one important thing, the air to the boiler room must be taken from outside. When the boiler burns in the right way, it sucks in several cubic meters of air per minute. There is usually a large valve on the wall. When the boiler burns, it must be open to the maximum. When the air is sucked in and the oxygen lights the wood, it should have a balance between the wood and the vaccum that arises. When you have got the right balance and the boiler is hot * (if you only fire with wood to heat the house, the boiler must not cool down. Lots of wood is needed to heat the boiler again. The boiler is water cooled and the water constantly cools down the boiler. It's logarithmic. First, nothing happens because the water and the boiler must be heated first. When the boiler has warmed up, the water quickly gets hot. 4:19 It looks like a thermometer is sitting to the right of the water tank. If you were only burning with wood, the temperature should not be below + 50 ° C. to save firewood.) * continuation of the line; so the small gap with the chain 4:23 automatically closed. On the forehead there should be a round large meter that has a black hand and a red hand. The red can be changed by hand. That instrument shows the water column. The water pressure from an Expansion tank in the attic. (it should sit high). It is a safety valve that prevents the boiler from exploding if that water gets too hot. The black hand measures how much water there is up to the Expansion tank and also the pressure from the heating elements upstairs. You put the red hand on top of the black one. Then you can see if the water column sinks. There is somewhere a little blue or red or maybe some other color a safety valve. There you fill up with water. If it is difficult to find, there must be a pipe that goes to a well. Follow that pipe up and you will probably find the safety valve. If there is a little overpressure on the water, water flows out through that pipe. If the boiler boils, there will be a geyser on the roof and all dampers must be closed. Cold water must be added. You do this with the tap on the safety valve.

In the longer term, the government believes that goals are needed in two areas; access to fast broadband throughout Sweden and to stable mobile services of good quality - where the key word is "use without perceived limitation". The whole of Sweden includes areas where people and things are normally located. The goals mean that 98 percent should have access to broadband of at least 1 Gbit / s at home and at work, the remaining 1.9 percent should have access to at least 100 Mbit / s, and 0.1 percent should have access to at least 30 Mbit / s by 2025 at the latest. The goals also mean that everyone should have access to stable mobile services of good quality where they are normally by 2023"

Thank you for telling me where you live. I looked it up on the map. It's beautiful but cold in winter. Very interesting to me as my ancestors were from Sweden. I live in Portland Oregon.

Was really excited to see this blog, see how you guys managed the real winter there. You survived and seem to be doing well so that comforting. I’m moving to the north of Sweden with my sister in May (if COVID permits it) and I’m a little nervous about the winter time. Being from Belgium, with weather conditions similar to the UK, it’s nice to see how people from the UK manage. I grew up in the country side, with no warm running water or heating apart from the living room and kitchen, no inside toilet (actually still one of those old toilets that’s just a whole in the ground) etc but I’m 34 now, I’ve since gotten used to city life where everything is made for your convenience so the days of living a more simpler/harder life are long behind me and I’m afraid I’ve unlearned everything. Your videos give me courage though.

Don't worry - you'll survive and relearn. Winter is not going to suddenly surprise you. When you arrive in May, you have half a year to get prepared and adapt. Most of the times it's not even that cold anyway. And the Swedish - and Finnish - coldness is different than the Belgian. Because it's not as humid it's easier to live with.
@tinaverstraeten21733 жыл бұрын
@@timoterava7108 haha thank you, you are right. The cold is different there and I probably don’t have to worry about it. I was in Lofoten last winter and before I got over there I was really worried about the cold as well . Once I got there it turned out that there was no reason to worry at all. I didn’t get cold once, even though I was outside for hours, often standing in the same spot for a long time (I’m a photographer). I’ll probably be fine.
@timoterava71083 жыл бұрын
@@tinaverstraeten2173 The Lofoten is an altogether different story. It's way more humid there - unlike in Northern Sweden/Finland.
