Valentina Gomez, who previously caused outrage for urging voters not to be "weak and gay," accused the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. of being the "most wretched" holiday and that Black people should no longer be seeking reparations.

I had the opportunity to explain the Juneteenth holiday to a few people in Vegas, back in the late 90's. They were from California and had overheard that we were from Texas. They heard about the holiday from others, but didn't know the origin of the day. After explaining it to them, they said they will celebrate the day when they got back to L.A. I'm 68. The "neo-Confederate" sub-culture is a real thing, and has been around for 150 years resenting the Union, the US Constitution, and half the population. My father was one from rural Texas, and he was raised with a LOT of weird and offensive beliefs, which I don't think he ever fully rejected. He hated Muhammad Ali for being uppity, Sammy Davis Jr. for having a pretty blond wife, but especially the Irish in general (for some reason), and particularly John Kennedy. He whistled elaborate happy tunes all day when Kennedy was assassinated. He was taught Lincoln was a bad man and that White people were superior. He wasn't particularly religious. He tried to be a dutiful father, but eventually drove my mother away with his anti-intellectualism and bigotry when I was 12, and also eventually abandoned my brother and I entirely after about 10 years after remarrying someone like himself. My mother's beautiful guidance in life prevented any trauma, but he wasn't extreme anyway. just sort of pathetic.
