I am an extreme minimalist that is currently living with under 80 possessions. The only reason I know this is because I have been downsizing to fit all my possessions in my 28 litre backpack. I do not think minimalism is about the counting of items. However, I think there is a fun spectacle element to it. That I personally enjoy doing as a Video Maker. I also practice mindfulness & slow living. In recent years I have come across several larger minimalist channels that have counted their items for fun. Such as Matt D’Avella & Samurai Matcha. Furthermore, I have also seen some smaller channels actually live with what I would call a ‘super’ extreme amount of belongings. Such as Craig and his 10 litre life channel. There are of course other extreme minimalists out there like, Robin Greenfield with 47 items. Youheum Son, whom at one point had about 82 possessions I believe. The truth is I find it fascinating what some people can comfortably live with and without. I like to learn about the simplicity of not owning or having many things. But also the trials that can also accompany these low amounts of possessions. As obviously there is then also a lack of convenience. That sometimes arises with owning less. I like to do these trials to learn about my own comfort levels and how to balance my having of possessions with the energy taken to take care of belongings. I am also intrigued with the idea of traveling very minimally, even if it isn’t a realistic endeavour for day to day life. The bum bag travel challenge for an extended period of time, not just 7 days, is my objective. Which is why I would like to trial it at home first. I will be doing this for 30 days. I will make a video half way to update you all and also at the end. In order to share my final thoughts and discoveries on this super extreme minimalist way of life. I would have chosen a zip up golf hoodie to be versatile and that athletic material is quick drying but also looks nicer than regular hoodies and you can unzip if it’s too hot and a black tank dress for hot weather or restaurants or the beach because it’s compact and rolls up easily. Also a white baseball cap because it protects from the elements but also looks nice in any tourist type situation but hides dirty hair if necessary and you can scrunch it up in your bag.

For temperate climate, I am down to 16L for a 4-day weekend. It could last ~30 days. Two sets merino undies, merino wool base layer shirt, running shorts, toiletries, meds, mobile accessories, etc. Of course, I always wear cargo pants, long-sleeve shirt with large breast pockets,windbreaker and merino wool undies.

It's unlikely I'd be traveling like this anything soon, but I do enjoy the speculative nature of these kinds of exercises. I don't have a bag to test as far as what would fit for certain, but this is about as few items as I can see myself going: phone, comb, hair elastic, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, dress, another dress, underwear, underwear, sketchbook, pen, footwear, sunscreen (I burn very easily), and a spare pair of glasses. That is 15 items by my count if I include the two consumables. I have pretty bad eyesight and never feel comfortable going anywhere without a spare pair of glasses. If I absolutely had to cut something from the list, I'd cut my hair short and skip the hair elastic and comb. I have long hair currently, so I made the list based on that.

I would add a small carrier oil and essential as they are multi-use items. You can also cut two pieces of quick dry fabric to use as a face towel and body towel for bathing. They fold down really flat and tiny. Also there are manual air compression bags small enough for the clothes you have packed which can be flattened while in your bag for more room.

You look good with straight hair, but you might find you like yourself with wavy or curly hair too! And even if you do decide that your hair straightener sparks joy and makes you feel more like yourself, then you can proudly include it in your minimalist lifestyle. I sold my straightener to a friend about a year ago, and have used it exactly as much as I used it before: not at all. I've been experimenting alternating between french braids (actually a twisted style that has the vibe of a french braid but is easier) and a silk headband (I was at a fabric stores and looking at the silk and it was so pretty I bought some). The twisted style pulls my hair kind of tight, so I like to let it relax in between.

I used to be a hairstylist (nurse now) and just wanted to let you know that not straightening for a while may actually help with the texture. I had a lot of clients who after straightening their hair regularly frequently it would become more unruly in its natural state. If they gave it time off, like you are planning to try for the month it would actually become less frizzy in the natural state. I hope this is what happens for you. I’m excited to see how you do with this challenge. I used to watch Craig’s channel too. I think he had an advantage being male.

Love to see these videos. I think it's nice to experiment with how little one can live with. There's so much freedom in it. For me japanese minimalists inspire and motivate me a lot too, just like Sibu inspired you! He's awesome. I also love Nozomi, you should check her out too. She only owns ONE PIECE in her wardrobe. It left an impression on me and I became a fan of "one piece"s too, even though I'm far away from only owning one piece (she even wrote a book but it's unfortunately only in japanese). But owning "one pieces" like long jumpsuits/ rompers, Longblazers, dresses or long dress shirts, changed my wardrobe quite a bit and reduced the number a lot, without giving up on style. I still want to look polished and professional, reducing to the minimum was the best choice. I would love to to see videos of you traveling or moving around in every day life with just this bumbag! Just like this creator "lostyetfree". loved his videos too.

Thank You very much. I will check her out that sounds interesting. I did a video about the idea of living in only 1 pieces (dresses) about a year ago. I loved the idea of the simplicity of just wearing dresses. It was however an experiment I had to do on holiday as the uk climate doesn’t permit it 😂. I discovered I could definitely do it in a warmer climate though. It’s very freeing. Just having the one simple thing you put on every day. 😊 Sadly I learnt the hard way with that video though, I only took my phone to film with. No tripod or mic. So the quality is not great 😂 we live & learn 😊 👗

I think my favorite packing endeavor was a three week trip from the US to Tokyo, then Sydney, then upstate New York. The trip was mostly business but had two formal-ish events. I started with 2 suitcases: a 22" rollabout with all my clothing and my computer, and a duffel bag with gifts (when going to Japan, that's a necessity.) On the final leg of my trip, the gift duffle was empty and folded up into my rollabout. 👍 I took two suits; one polyester blend, very dressy pantsuit; socks and underwear for one week; dressy flat shoes; a small toiletry bag; a tiny jewelry bag; laptop and cables. I cut my hair very short and used hotel shampoo; my implement was a purse seized folding comb/brush. Makeup was a single bronzer compact with mixed colors in it. Travel toothbrush, paste, floss, SPF 15 moisturizer, disposable razor, mini deoderant. A t-shirt for sleeping. Yes, it all fit into the 22" rollabout, and wasn't too heavy. I was able to maneuver it and the duffle on the plane, and on the train from Narita to Tokyo, and on the walk from the train station to my hotel. I did carry a medium sized purse as well with my phone, Kindle, passport, wallet, comb, and business cards. Was this a miracle of minimalism? Not for you, but it was for me!

I think you need more stuff if you are at home...I have a studio with own kitchen and bath room so I need towels, cleaning products, pots and pans, something to put my food on or in, I have a washing machine, laptop, phone a rack to put my washed clothes on, a laundry bag, bedding stuff, handgloves and so on and so on. I live on 30 square meter and that is very small in our country but for me it still feels as too much room, lol. I also have a blower when it is very hot. Also a watercooker. I think those items are all necessary to live. Dont you have a water bottle, passport is needed, etc? It looks minimalistic but as you commented at early replies: you share also things with others. But the challenge is very interesting!

Yes shared home items so easier. I don’t intend to take towels when I travel as where I will stay I think they will be provided. I like challenges like this. A few years ago I did one with 7 items of clothing for 40 days that worked very well for me. Quite an eye-opener and I found I'd made some good choices! As someone with wavy/curly hair, for years I didn't have a brush at all, just a wide-toothed comb that was so easy to just always have with me ;) The other thing I wondered is that if you're going to use what is effectively soap (Dr. Bronner's) as "toothpaste", why bother with any product?! It's the brushing that works, and not the various toothpaste variations that are such a huge industry, really. I've done this for years and my dental hygienist is very happy with the state of my teeth... Just a thought for you! (Personally I think a lot of people are just addicted to the flavour, it's a habit we've formed without really thinking much about it). Also, period products? You'd probably need something on a 30 day trip, I guess. Miss Minimalist did a great blog post many years ago about how she traveled in Europe with just a handbag (a bit like the Uniqlo ones that are so popular now), if you wanted to look that up.

Oh the miss minimalist blog thing sounds good I’ll look at that. Oh 😯 that’s interesting about the toothpaste. As I thought the Castile soup is at least antibacterial. The bum bag travel channel does have a video on super minimalist travel for females but the woman sharing her thoughts on it isn't a minimalist, so not much value there.. A very fun experiment you are starting! I'll be curious to hear your thoughts by the end of it. My own perspective is that just a bum bag is unnecessary restriction. A normal daypack is not too big but will allow for a quite comfortable lifestyle still - a couple more pairs of underwear for example :D
@SagelifeMinimalism6 ай бұрын
I enjoyed the girls rendition of her discussing what she would do, even from a non minimalist perspective. I thought it was interesting to see her trying to get into the mindset. For myself, as I’ve traveled with a very small daypack in the past there were still times in busy places when we were lumbered with the bags all day, that it still got in the way. It didn’t weigh that much probably 4kg/ 20L. I’ve also done a 10L. But they were annoying to carry. Especially in hot places. That’s why I think I’d really like to give bum bag travel a go in the right setting. That is, perhaps a very hot country where clothes would dry in under an hour etc. Also where there is no dress code 😂 and shorts & vests are acceptable 😊 I suppose it depends on all our personal comfort levels. I just have flashbacks to how much my daypack annoyed me 😂 Also if it was super hot it would be possible to fully embrace the bikini 👙as underwear lifestyle 😂 So far one week in I’m mainly missing my laptop 💻 and a coat in the terrible English weather 😂 😊

@@SagelifeMinimalism Very interesting! I'm going to look through your channel some more ^^ For myself, I don't see bikini as viable underwear (not usually breathable and thicker than normal underwear. And unfortunately my experience is that hot countries are also extremely humid and clothes need more than a day to dry fully ;(
@SagelifeMinimalism6 ай бұрын
@marialooksaround I suppose countries environments will vary greatly so that’s something for me to bare in mind. I know Egypt and Jordan were insanely dry but I also had to cover up completely with linen. Sun & Cultural respect. But the good thing was that clothes would dry incredibly quickly. Greece is the same too. I’ve not yet been to places where it is damp humid instead of dry heat. Food for thought 💭 🤔 😊

How do you do that with clothes and hobbies?
@SagelifeMinimalism6 ай бұрын
I think if we only think of things in the now. Rather than what we may need in the future it’s much easier to do than we may all initially think. For instance, for the immediate future I know I have no formal events planned. If I did I could borrow or thrift. Then give back to the charity shop after the event. My hobbies are largely ones that involve only using consumable products. That are used up for the activity and then given away. Candle making, kintsugi, macramé, not forgetting this video making. Which we can all now do with our phones. Simply walking. Body weight exercises. Reading with loaned library books. There are lots we can do with impermanent things 😊

Very interesting challenge, and very inspiring. I made up my own list of what I would need to take if I were going to travel for 30 days and couldn't get it down to less than 33 items. I also didn't count a couple of things, such as my prescription glasses or prescription medication as I wouldn't be able to function without them and I felt taking them wasn't a choice. Good luck, will be looking forward to your next video!

@SagelifeMinimalism7 ай бұрын
In the UK it isn’t mandatory to carry ID around with us. Also even if it was we only have passports no national identity card. Obviously I will have to carry my passport when I travel but technically a passport isn’t owned by us and neither is money. It is owned by the government. Which is part of the reason why in a British passport it says it is a crime to deface it. So when I say living with only 14 items. I mean that are my own 😊 interestingly our bank cards are also owned by the bank. Keys if you rent belong to your landlord etc. Which is why I haven’t included them 😊 Thank You ☺️

I keep thinking I would love the idea of one or two sets of clothes. But, erm, well, period... and my toddler... and the fact I wipe everything on my bottoms would make that stop. When I am too old for my period and I have no longer got a toddler, I would be able to at least get rid of 1/2 my already small wardrobe.

I know it’s a very personal subject but with menstrual cups and things you don’t need to use underwear. I know some people have long term birth control too where they barely have periods. But I can understand why people do. When we get old we may have other problems. 😬 🙊

@@SagelifeMinimalism I have period underwear [they are heavier/bulkier than reg underwear] and I tried the reusable pads and didn't like them, they were super comfortable but waiting to wash them was yuck. I bleed to heavy 2-3/5 days to the point where I don't even want to leave the house for the nursery run. I keep thinking about birth control, but worry about the change it will make in other areas besides a weaker period.

Wouldn't you need a passport, water bottle or a coat or a sun protective gear?
@SagelifeMinimalism7 ай бұрын
Well… I would need the passport yes. But passports, money etc are technically owned by the government. They are not ours. Someone else asked about keys and bank cards but they too are owned by authorities. My keys personally are owned by my landlord. At the end of my tenancy I have to give them back. The bank cards are owned by the bank. We use them for access to our money of course. I can get by without a water bottle. I think just the two things I may actually struggle without are quite literally what you have pointed out. A coat & a pair of sunglasses. But I definitely feel like I need a 2nd vest along with my t- shirt to make the washing cycle easier. So I couldn’t forego anything in their place. But it may well be that I’d have to live with 16 items long term. 🧥 😎 I’m happy to currently run about with my hood up 😂 at least for 30 days 😂

One thing I don't really 'get' about many female minimalists are the hair straighteners. Or other hair 'equipment'. I have just never ever used any of those things, I suppose, whatever length my hair. I'm far from being a minimalist in daily life, as I love my books and records and other bits and pieces, but I can and do travel with just a change of underwear, a hankie, debit card, phone, keys and a toothbrush, etc. It's just an observation not a criticism, but a lot of female minimalists- at least on KZbin- do seem to carry more makeup and hair products than many 'non minimalist' women do on the daily. 🤷🏻
@SagelifeMinimalism7 ай бұрын
I can’t speak for all females but personally my hair is so curly that it is actually uncomfortable. It’s not a vanity thing but a comfort thing. It’s So thick around my crown that my scalp feels like it can’t breathe. When I straighten it this is less so. It also stops it being volumous and itching my face. So really unless someone as ever had thick, frizzy, volumous hair, you are quite right - they wouldn’t understand or ‘get’ it. I have also not witnessed many female minimalists wearing make up. In fact more seem to not wear it. I usually wear simply a tinted moisturiser which I would not class as make up. I don’t usually use any hair products either. I have a one multi use Shea butter that I can use to soothe my eczema prone skin whilst at the same time using as a hair conditioner. So I don’t really think these personal care items would quantify as being ‘more’ than many non minimalist women. I know the female minimalist KZbin channels I’ve watched definitely don’t have more. Most non minimalist female friends I know have drawers and drawers full of make up they will never use. And at the bare minimum have at least 10 products they put on as part of their make up routine 🤷♀️

Because you feel comfortable with your hair... I can't live without it too because my head would look like a jungle and it's not because it's "natural" that it's automatically beautiful.. Matbe you'll need more other stuff than other women will think useless 😌

I think the different formulas with different essential oils, definitely have slightly different effects. I’ve found the citrus one more cleansing, which for some people means more drying. The almond one is more conditioning, which for some people can be too much grease. The mild one, providing someone’s hair isn’t on the really greasy or super dry side, seems to work out. 🧴 😊

Yea I commend people trying to do this lifestyle. I don’t have a backpack or even a bumbag. My coworkers always are surprise/laugh at me every time I finish work because I don’t have a backpack or even carry anything with me. I just log out and go. I have ability to move in less than 60secs. I’m completely anchor-less. Here are my life processions. If this helps. 1) A mechanical watch 2) iPhone SE 2022 white edition 3) Small hygiene pouch that 5cm long by 3cm wide that’s includes my mini Marc 3 travel razor, oral b clic toothbrush head, and gentlemen multitool that has needle, scissors and nail clippers fits easily into my side pocket. I use my smartphone for everything playing video games, watching movies, applying for jobs, online grocery shopping etc. one of my jobs I have to show a PowerPoint presentation for work I simply plug in my smartphone and I’m ready to go.

@@SagelifeMinimalism Yea the goal of minimalism is to create a system that is sustainable and works long term. You don’t want to be Socrates shirtless living inside a barrel (as you discovered this isn’t sustainable in the modern economy and won’t work long term). I’ve tested this system. It works really well. Personally, I work for several companies so my life is always on the go. I also to the gym 5 times a week and really big on health and nutrition. Smartphones are needed for jobs punching in and out, calling up clients, emergencies, contacting family etc. Although, I could use my finger to brush my teeth, choose not to shave and have a beard and grow out my nails. I always prefer to be well groomed when interacting with people. Because you never know when a job opportunity arrives. I have mechanical watch to tell the date and time and doesn’t need to be recharged overnight. It’s quite the beauty as well seiko 805 military watch. Anyways hope this helps. Remember the goal is to build a system that is sustainable - a clothing system, a hygiene system, and a tech system. All the best

What about mouthwash and floss?
@SagelifeMinimalism5 ай бұрын
If I was traveling I would maybe for go the mouth wash for a short while. Especially as it’s a liquid. Which often comes in larger bottles. I’m not sure about the floss. At home these consumable items are both shared items. I would possibly buy the floss whilst traveling but leave at the hotel. Anything that was leftover. Similarly to sun lotion. 😊

5:41 You could try the curly girl method if your hair is naturally curly, if that is why it doesn’t want to be tamed.
@SagelifeMinimalism7 ай бұрын
Thank You ☺️ I do scrunch it when I wear it naturally but the texture just really annoys me. They’re not smooth curls. It’s quite frizzy. But I realise even since I was a teenager I’ve never given myself time to actually get use to this texture near my face. Maybe it is something I can get use to 🤔 but I suppose I have to give it chance first. My typical hair routine is curly girl method the first day. Next day I wake up and it’s a disaster. I don’t like washing it everyday as I can get dry scalp. So I then usually give in and straighten the 2nd day then the 3rd day it’s a bun/ pony tail/ plait. End of 3rd day or 4th day morning - repeat the cycle 😂.

What about your period?
@SagelifeMinimalism6 ай бұрын
I decided at the beginning of my channel that it wasn’t something I really felt comfortable talking about on the internet on a personal level. However, There are many methods that means people don’t require products, Or permanent products. For instance, some people who have the injection for birth control don’t have a period for 2 years at a time. Some people who use tampons/ sanitary towels. (hopefully organic cotton ones) are using them in the same way toilet roll would be used. (More or less.) That is it’s not even a product in a single bottle or tube for instance. But a pack. That is used up. So I think at the most it could be considered a consumable item. If someone wanted to attempt the bum bag challenge that preferred this method of period control. They could just get it as and when needed and obviously it wouldn’t be something they needed everyday. It would just be left in their home or hotel mainly. Until used up. So they wouldn’t have to worry about packing it or carrying it around most days. Hope this answered your question in a round about way. 😊
