Of course, the Victorians (and probably some modern day nutters) used to race Penny Farthings around a track, but the front wheels were like 40 inches and the tyres weren't pneumatic - solid rubber! Can't imagine a highside from a saddle that's 4 or 5 feet up!

The freewheel hub that runs in unicycle bearings is found on the front of those drift trikes. Huffy was the manufacturer of most of them as they came from a kids big wheel thing called the green machine.

One of the best videos I've seen in ages! You need to use the trick Penny Farthing riders used to do when riding downhill. They took their feet off the pedals and put their legs OVER the handlebars. The idea being that going over the handlebars was quite likely and having your legs over (and resting on!) the handlebars meant they would land feet-first. The was called "doing a cropper" and it is the origin of the phrase "to come a cropper". It's also worth bearing in mind that Penny Farthings did have a front-wheel brake but clearly anything other than very gentle braking would cause the rider to go over the handlebars. Hence, as I see others have pointed, the Penny Farthing's successor was called the "Safety Bicycle". Once again, thank you for an excellent video. You nutter. 👍

Great video as always. Yes, there are non-fixed hubs. You could use unicycle freewheel hubs, you could even ask Florian Schlumpf (the guy that invented the Schlumpf Speeddrive) to build a two speed hub for you.
@matt84768
@matt84768 Жыл бұрын
That's super interesting. Here's definition for yall who don't want to google Schlumpf Drive is a two-speed planetary gear assembly for use on bicycles and unicycles. It is distinct from other bicycle planetary gear assemblies in that it is located behind the chainring rather than in the rear hub

@@paddycore8985 I can see how it would work on a bicycle but on a unicycle you need to be able to pedal both directions for balance, braking and directional control. Not saying they don't exist just that I never seen one and would not like to own one.
