Actually, after this, I examined the cloud up 2, it was fine, and I found that the addition a single guy line attached to the rear window made all the difference in string winds, which I have tried and tested numerous times since. And my most recent video sees me test out the cloud peak in 50/60mph winds, and it stood up well. However, if someone was to fork out £1000 for me I would happily give a hilleberg a test.

Great vid guys, tbh, I wouldn’t be too hard on the tent. If it was reckoned to be in the 40-50mph range, given the exposed site, fully geodesic tents or Hilleberg type tents with Kerlon flysheets are really the way to go. There is a limit to how much crap a 3 season tent can take and those are pretty big gust speeds 💨💨💨💨

Now that looked fun, glad it was you two rather than me. Regarding the MSR tent poles, if you look on KZbin and check online at the reviews you will see the Elixir for some reason does have weak poles, so its a common issue, yes the winds were crazy but even so for the money the tents cost you would expect better. Shame you didn't cook a full English on the trangia whilst the gales were blowing ha ha, better still damn why wasn't Nath in that tarp, my god you can imagine the moaning, cursing and anger that would have gone on lol. Excellent video, I also liked the cooking bit. A friend of mine had his Vango Hurricane blow down in a gale (50mph +) many years ago and when he wrote to Vango they replied "Well Mars Bars don't come from Mars, it's just a name." The point being that when some buildings suffered structural damage and the Met Office have issued warnings, how would you expect a tent to hold up. I was camping on a ridge on Mount Hood in Oregon years ago when the wind got very gusty. My brother and I were collapsing the ten to move elsewhere and I just pulled out the last tent peg when another very strong gust blew the tent away!

I'm of the opinion that the MSR tent held up fine until he left the doors open in that raging wind and walked away, a tents structure is with all the doors zipped closed, the other tent failed with all the doors zipped so this is a product failure whereas the MSR tent failure was operator error by leaving it open to the wind,

Totally agree. The rules are the rules with structural integrity of tents, yet we’re quick to say when we break them … the tents are no good. I’ve had this tent in higher winds and it’s been fantastic.

These dome shaped tents are the wrong profile. My small low profile one man ten I bought in the 1970 s was a Robert Sanders back packer coffin shaped tent which I used for approx 20 years and was never blown down once and it stood up to many big gales .I now still use the same shape in Terra Nova one man which also stood up to stronger winds than that in a yellow warning 2018 on Cleveland Way at 1800 ft. Those flimsy dome tents would be flattened

Well that does it for me, MSR tents are off my list. Okay as a fair-weather tent, but when they are really required they let you down; and as old mate said, they cost a fair bit too so you would expect better if you are laying your hard earned down.

Had a tent flattened in a storm so went for hillebergs as reconned it would save me money not having to replace inferior tents and your safety is not worth compromising on.

Mmmmmmm Thom looked gutted about the MSR Tent, looked like an Elephant had trod on it(they aint cheap either, MSR Tents not Elephants).......the naturehike seemed to come away in better condition even though its not designed for that kind of 'battering'......great food and an eventful camp lads, good entertainment..........cheers..Stu.

Cheers, Stu. Yeah he was pretty gutted, but to be fair to MSR they quickly sent out new poles, and a spare set too, so a result. Was proud of the Naturehike, the thing kept springing back to life. Will upload a video soon where I assess the damge. Thanks for watching! Ab!

THe Naturehike is great in winds up to 40mph, I have found that an additional guy line tied off of the rear window helps considerably.

Just been wild camping up the Moors with my son, lovely time round the Manaton - Bowermans nose area. All was great till we got home and found 2 ticks on me and 4 on my son. Got them off. Just wondered how do you deal with the Ticks that are so prevalent 'everywhere' not just Dartmoor? Had a great time and a lovely 11mile walk over the moors, just a bit tainted by the 'inspection' process that has to be done every time you wild camp! these Ticks are bastards and 'everywhere'!
@SummitOrNothing
@SummitOrNothing 5 жыл бұрын
Eugh!!! That is horrendous. So far I have not met any ticks (touch wood), and I have been tarp camping up there too, so surprising really. Was you wearing shorts? I was always told to keep your legs covered when walking through the long grass, apart from that, I have no real experience. Shame that happened to you both, sounded like a great experience other than that!

@@SummitOrNothing Yeah always great up there - love it! Perhaps it was the Bank Hols weather or we were just in a bad area - who knows... We were both wearing long walking trousers - one bastard got me on the wrist. They are pretty small and I think a lot of people don't even notice them, they fall off after a day and a good drink! Good luck with the coastal stuff and the charity matey :)

that MSR tent is a ultra-light summer tent designed to be as light as it can its not designed for any form of high wind hence summer tent
@SummitOrNothing
@SummitOrNothing 3 жыл бұрын
Well, its actually a 3 season tent and I have never seen a mention of summer use only in any description. And for nearly £300 you would hope it would perform better than this, surely?
@redstonemaster1000
@redstonemaster1000 3 жыл бұрын
@@SummitOrNothing Three-season tents are not designed for extreme wind loading, i have the two-man version of that tent and have used it in 50mph + winds. With the proper pitching, it was rock solid didn't move an inch. This isn't near £300 you can pick them up new for £200 its an entry-level tent the lowest end model they make. Good luck getting any three-season tent to survive similar conditions for less than that money. Also, the guy lines were not even tight. User error here plain and simple.
