I vote for restoration. I used to own the Red / Black / White 1986/7 D-Reg - Had a lot of fun on that bike It was never the same after I ran out of petrol - not entirely, I had to do 60 all the way down the motorway until I filled her up. Unfortunately I think there was some sediment or something and ended up having to have a filter put on the tank and it never performed the same after that. I don't think the engineers took it past 70 mph so they never tested the speed I started noticing the drop-off which was about 80+ mph I had 125mph on the clock midnight downhill on the M5 from WSM back North.

That'll clean up lovely, all that dull corrosion on the alloy engine cases, block, frame etc will polish off to good as new with some autosol.😎👍 How about fitting the engine in a gocart or offroad buggy!? 😎👍 When the engine won't start like that or hasn't been run for a bit, squirt a bit of ezi start in the air intake, it'll pick up straight away! 😎👍 That tapping sounds like the hydraulic tappets are sticking? Could be just needs running more to loosen them off, oil change will help, they get sticky and gummed up with carbon deposits. It's not uncommon for a high mileage bike to sound a bit tappy at start up or when cold but goes off when warmed up! 😎👍

You won't burn out the starter motor, but trying to start it with a flat battery could destroy the sprag clutch that engages from the starter motor. Also, the very first thing I'd do on a bike that has been stood is drop the oil and refill if I'm going to try to start it. I'd probably then remove the carbs and give them a clean as they'll be full of varnish. GPZ's are rock solid, but they do have a habit of shedding magnets from their stators, which can then run around the alternator cover and trash the alternator. There's no reason why it wouldn't start after 4 years, but the process of trying to start it will be more damaging than it having been sat for 4 years unless you take the right precautions beforehand.

I had a 91 gpz500s when I 17 (about 11 years ago) after done my test, picked it up for about £100 with t&t on. Had it for 2years, bought it with 60k on clock, did few odd jobs to it sold it nearly 85k and was still running well. The stator plate go on these very common I had two on mine and cam chains are absolutely weak as piss. Iv had a few years experience building custom one off trikes with my dad over the years and I think if your gonna make a drift trike, your best bet is to use 12/14 inch wheels and short as possible wheel base as you can, could use higher profile tyres but using big 17/18 or 19s wide tyres you wouldn't really have to power to spin them hard. You probably also have to alter the rake of the front, not a extreme rake but enough to keep the front tyre profile flat on the ground as possible. And if you turbo it probably use a small diesel turbo like a corsa 1.3 diesel turbo or something similar. Also on the rear axle depending of your going to weld a sprocket to it with a turbo it probably won't last long on there with the weight and power it'll need to pull two two tyres and extra weight. Not the best of bikes to try and trike, but if you had something like a gpz550 shaft drive would be easier. But I'd like to see what you decide to do and how you get on with this project.
